Chapter 356: Numb
Marilyn probably never would have imagined that there would be a Pokémon on the professional stage that didn't care about its own ability.
A Pokémon normally only has one ability. Shouldn't something so important be a primary focus of development?
But Arthur's Little Eevee had that luxury.
It has four abilities. A different form means a different ability. More forms, more freedom!
Of course, jokes aside, the truth was that his energy was limited. Even with Little Eevee's exceptional talent, it was impossible to fully develop all three of its evolutionary forms in a short time.
This was what you might call a happy problem.
And by a stroke of luck, it had perfectly circumvented the strategic intent of Marilyn's Weezing.
To ensure its Neutralizing Gas could reliably affect the Leafeon, the Weezing had moved in very close. As a result, it was easily hit by Leafeon's Leech Seed.
"Weezing, use Toxic!"
At this point, Marilyn was probably a bit bewildered.
She couldn't see through this Leafeon of Arthur's. The vast majority of her pre-match preparations had been aimed at his two Charizard, with a small part considering Greninja.
But she had never imagined she would be facing a Leafeon, and one that had just evolved on the spot.
Helpless, she could only fall back on a traditional approach.
For a Poison-type Pokémon, poisoning the opponent first is never a wrong move.
However, Arthur seemed completely unconcerned.
"Maintain some distance. Fall back for now."
From her opponent's command, Marilyn could see no intention of curing the poison.
But the small amount of life force absorbed by Leech Seed couldn't possibly offset the damage from Toxic, could it?!
"Weezing, be cautious. Keep pressing forward!"
At this point, Marilyn couldn't be sure of Arthur's intentions. She could only cautiously observe while continuing to advance.
Then, seeing an opportunity, she commanded again: "Use Venoshock! Watch out for a counterattack!"
This was a classic small combo for Poison-type Pokémon.
First, poison the opponent. Then, manipulate the poison in the surrounding environment, including within the enemy's body, to launch an attack, causing terrifying damage!
The move Venoshock is exceptionally effective against a poisoned enemy. Like Specter's Hex, it's a special attacking move whose power can be comparable to an ultimate under specific conditions!
But even after landing this classic combo, Marilyn remained cautious, even reminding her own Pokémon at the end of her command to be on guard.
Arthur's fearsome reputation was just too great. Even though there was some intelligence suggesting this was just a very young Eevee, who had only been at a fan-tournament level not long ago, Marilyn didn't dare to be careless for a single moment.
This was Arthur's Pokémon, after all!
Who knew if it would suddenly leap up and unleash a close-quarters martial arts combo on her?
Unfortunately for her, this time, she had truly guessed wrong.
"Leafeon, run!"
No combo, no close combat. After taking the Venoshock, Leafeon turned and ran.
For a moment, even Marilyn was stunned.
What is going on?
And soon, Arthur gave her the answer.
"Now, use Work Up!"
He was exploiting his opponent's cooldown period!
Under specific conditions, Venoshock's power is explosive, and therefore its cooldown is also very long, comparable to an ultimate move.
Arthur was having Leafeon bait the opponent with its own body, to draw out its moves.
Seeing a poisoned enemy, how many Poison-type trainers could resist the temptation of a Venoshock?
But Marilyn was still confused.
Is this really worth it? And are you really not going to cure the toxic status?
"Weezing, press forward and interrupt it!"
Even without a move, she still had to try and interrupt.
However, Arthur had long since calculated that Weezing wasn't fast enough. He had more than enough time.
Leafeon, racing against the clock, held its breath. The crescent-shaped leaf on its forehead, which looked like a cowlick, was now spinning like a small pinwheel.
At the last moment, Leafeon took a hit from Weezing's charge but managed to forcefully complete its Work Up.
"Bite it! Use Poison Gas!"
Seeing the buff could no longer be interrupted, Marilyn decisively commanded her Weezing to seize the opportunity and deal damage.
After biting the Leafeon, the Weezing continuously spewed poisonous gas, agitating the toxic energy within Leafeon's body. An internal and external assault. In an instant, Leafeon's normally green skin was almost stained a deep purple.
The commentators were offering their sharp critique.
"This was a bit of a net loss for Arthur. He forced a buff, but the price was that his Leafeon is now in a critical condition!"
The other commentator added, "Especially since he's not curing the poison!"
Marilyn was also suspicious—did her opponent really make a mistake?
I feel like I can finish it in one go!
But a few seconds later, she finally understood Arthur's plan.
With his final command, Arthur showed his hand.
"Use Baton Pass!"
And then, he directly took out his Poké Ball and recalled Leafeon.
In that instant, Marilyn's face was filled with frustration. She wanted to slap herself.
She had been cautious for the entire match, observing for the entire match, only to find out that the opponent had only sent out this Leafeon to pass the baton!
The Normal-type move: Baton Pass. Its effect is to leave a small barrier on the spot. If the user has a buff effect when using this move, an energy sigil will be left within the barrier. A teammate authorized by the user to enter the barrier can pick up this sigil and inherit the user's previous buff effect!
This is a move specifically designed to set up a teammate.
There's even a whole strategy built around this move!
This is a strategic skill that can fully utilize the mid-battle switch permission in the singles format.
As the first runner in the relay, Leafeon's role was simply to complete Work Up and then leave behind a Baton Pass before fainting.
That's why he hadn't cared about the damage from Weezing, nor was he in a hurry to cure his own toxic status.
I've been had! At this moment, Marilyn was filled with regret! Extreme regret!
If she had just been more aggressive earlier, she might have been able to one-shot that Leafeon. But because she was wary of a potential counter from Arthur, her Weezing had never dared to go all out.
A golden opportunity, completely wasted!
Now, the Baton Pass was complete. The rest of the match would be incredibly difficult.
Arthur then sent out Specter.
Marilyn's face looked as if she were wearing a mask of pain.
There was already a gap in their Pokémon's raw power. Now, Specter would also receive a boost to both its attack and special attack.
She had failed to target the Charizard she wanted to, and instead had allowed the opponent to create a monstrous Gengar!
How was she supposed to deal with this Gengar now? Marilyn was at a loss.
The referee was still asking her if she agreed to resume the match.
She glanced at the field—
Her Weezing innocently blew a smoke ring at her, then shivered.
Oh, and she had forgotten. The Weezing was still afflicted with Leech Seed. That thing doesn't just disappear when the user faints.
Damn it!
Now, she was completely and utterly numb.
