Chapter 301: The Search
Soon, the duel in the valley was decided.
The larger Charizard, the one Caleb had recognized, was the final victor.
After the battle, it landed on the ground, threw its head back, and roared, unleashing a thick pillar of fire into the sky. Immediately, all the Charizard, Charmeleon, and Charmander in the valley joined in, roaring and breathing fire in unison.
"What is he saying?"
Arthur asked the Pokémon beside him.
Without a Poké Ball to create a mental link, humans and wild Pokémon couldn't understand each other. But Pokémon could communicate amongst themselves.
Although their cries were different—some meowing, some barking—as long as they were Pokémon, they could understand each other's language. It was truly a miracle of nature.
Greninja, standing by Arthur's side, helped translate the distant Charizard's voice.
"They are cheering, praising the leader's bravery because he just defeated a challenger."
Arthur was slightly surprised.
"He really is the leader?"
Caleb's words were confirmed. There was no longer any doubt.
Julian's Charizard was indeed the boss of this valley.
But his own Charizard? Where had it gone?
Soon, the leader Charizard, having finished celebrating its victory, finally noticed the arrival of the few humans. At the same time, it quickly recognized Caleb and his parents.
Shaking off the defeated challenger, the leader Charizard flew over with a gust of wind, landing in front of Arthur's group. It lowered its body, allowing Caleb to hug its neck and affectionately stroke its scales.
It was clear that even though it had become the leader of this valley, this Charizard still held deep affection for Caleb and his parents. After landing, it completely retracted its intimidating presence, becoming as gentle as a large dog under Caleb's touch.
It was like a completely different dragon from the one that had just roared霸气 after defeating its challenger.
After a moment of petting, Caleb straightened up and shot Arthur a proud, raised eyebrow, his chin held high.
He seemed to be saying: See? My brother's Charizard is amazing, right?
It wasn't that he wanted to humiliate or mock Arthur; his personality wasn't that malicious. He just couldn't help it!
His brother had been the proudest pillar of his life for over a decade. So, since entering the mountains, he had been longing to see a look of surprise, admiration, and even concession in Arthur's eyes.
Now, his moment had finally arrived!
His brother's Charizard had just won a thrilling battle. There couldn't be a better opportunity!
His small, upturned face was practically screaming, "Isn't he amazing? Isn't he? Come on, be amazed!"
Unfortunately for him, Arthur had no time or inclination to care about any of this.
When the leader Charizard looked over at him, he had Greninja relay his question.
"Excuse me, are there any Charizard here that have lived for two hundred years?"
The leader Charizard thought for a moment, scratched its head with a claw, then spread its wings and shook its head.
Humans couldn't understand the communication between Pokémon, so Caleb had no idea what Arthur had just asked.
But Caleb's mother keenly sensed Arthur's disappointment.
"Child, are you unable to find a Pokémon your family released here?"
She had noticed that Arthur had been scanning the surrounding cliffs ever since they arrived, as if searching for something. Then, her eldest son's Charizard had come over, but no Charizard or any other Pokémon had approached Arthur.
They naturally couldn't imagine that Arthur was looking for his own companion from two hundred years ago. They just assumed he was here to visit a Pokémon released by a deceased family member.
"Don't worry," the mother said, gently comforting Arthur. "The bond between a person and a Pokémon isn't so fragile. As long as he is still in this valley, I'm sure he will come to see you."
Arthur could only force a stiff smile in response.
Just then, the leader Charizard, in a show of camaraderie, let out a roar for Arthur.
Its attitude towards humans was quite friendly, much better than the wild Aerodactyl they had seen hunting on their way here.
Soon, many of the Charizard from the cliff walls flew down. They passed the message along, and soon, the leader's relayed question from Arthur had spread throughout the group.
Most of the Charizard were confused at first.
Through Greninja's translation, Arthur learned their replies.
"Never heard of a Charizard that old."
"Can we Charizard really live for two hundred years?"
Arthur's fists clenched subconsciously.
A normal Charizard indeed couldn't live for two hundred years. Their typical lifespan is between one hundred and forty to one hundred and eighty years. But his Charizard was different!
Because it had Mega Evolved before!
And it had Mega Evolved into the Dragon/Fire-type Charizard X.
This meant it had a partial Dragon typing, and its lifespan would naturally be longer than that of a normal Charizard!
So Arthur believed it had to still be alive!
It had to be!
Fortunately, it wasn't long before good news arrived.
One of the Charizard suddenly had a look of realization and let out a couple of cries.
Greninja also became excited and immediately relayed the dragon's words to Arthur through their link.
"That dragon over there says he remembers! The one who just challenged the leader—her father is apparently a very, very old Charizard."
"Then where is he now?!"
Arthur asked impatiently.
At the same time, his eyes began to search for the Charizard that had just been defeated.
He found that the challenger seemed to have already left after its defeat and was no longer in this part of the valley.
The Charizard that had provided the information then pointed in a direction, telling Arthur that the challenger had likely gone that way. Her cave was on the mountain in that direction.
Arthur immediately set off with all his Pokémon, unable to wait another moment!
Behind him, Caleb and his parents called out, trying to stop him.
Caleb's parents were worried that a boy his age would be in danger running around alone in these mountains. Caleb, on the other hand, was probably just upset that he hadn't yet heard Arthur's sigh of admiration.
But at this moment, Arthur could no longer hear anything.
"Specter, Mismagius, Doublade, all of you fly up to the cliffs and search! Little Eevee, you run ahead and look too! If you smell a Charizard, tell me the direction! Greninja, you protect Little Eevee!"
Except for Little Lapras, who had difficulty moving in the complex mountain terrain, Arthur sent out all his Pokémon to search!
They could all feel Arthur's urgency and anxiety, and so they all put in their utmost effort.
Fortunately, fate was not playing a cruel joke this time. Soon, Mismagius sent a message through their mental link—
Found him!
