The NU Demon

Chapter 63: Changes of self and Scenery

I tried to scream as my consciousness returned. The echoes of the pain still flaring through my thoughts. But it was only that, echos, the pain was gone somehow. It took me a moment to reorient myself, then I realized I couldn't move at all. Not even a twitch of the pinky finger, or open my eyes. I start to panic again, and try to squirm free of whatever is holding me so completely.

At first nothing happens. Then I feel something weak near my right arm. I push on it, at first it doesn't move, but after a few more pushes I feel it give a little. I keep pushing, and slowly room for my arm to push outward grows. Suddenly it gives way with a crack that jolts my whole prison. I yank my arm free, destroying more of whatever is holding me in the process. I feel the cold and damp air of the outside crash against my skin as I shift more. That's when I realize I can't breathe, and start to thrash even harder.

But it seems whatever this is has lost its integrity with the freedom of my arm, as a simple roll of the shoulder to bring my arm up to my face causes more chunks to break off and fall away. I reach up and claw at the portion covering my face, quickly finding a hold on the edge and yanking it. First yank does nothing, the second makes it loose, the third causes a chunk to break free.

I tear it away, opening up my mouth and nose to breathe. I sputter and cough as I gasp for breaths I didn't realize I needed. The cold and damp air outside rushes down my throat, leaving a rancid taste and smell that almost makes me gag.

I take a few deep breaths to steady myself, then start feeling out my prison from the outside. It feels cold, solid, but not the metal kind. It has a weird texture that seems smooth, but I just can't quite put my finger on what it is. Even though my fingers are literally on it.

I reach up and tear more of it away from my face, trying to free my eyes. As the chips and chunks fall away a golden glow bathes the area in front of me. I look for the source, and after a moment realize the glow is coming from me, specifically my eyes. The damn race change did it I surmise.

I look around, the twisting of my head now being enough to cause more bits of my prison to crack. Around me is concrete, a big open space, red pipes with sprinklers hang from the ceiling. Parts of the ceiling have collapsed, chunks of dirt, rock, and concrete piled up to the ceiling in some places. All around me are faded yellow lines in neat rows, many of them having illegible numbers on their bottoms.

I'm in an underground parking garage, and I have no idea how I got here. I reach up and pull more of whatever is holding me apart, bringing it forward to examine it. It's some sort of rainbow colored crystal. And looking down I find the rest of my prison no different. Weird ass evolution bullshit.

But I'm also curious, so like a monkey from a kids show I pull the piece up to my face and sniff it. It smells surprisingly sweet, like sugar but with a hint of vanilla. My curiosity gets the better me, and I give it a small lick with my tongue. It tastes even better than it smells. I pop it into my mouth and bite down, a nice crunch as it seems to just melt in my mouth as the sweetness rolls over my tongue and down my throat.

Then I realize what I've done, and how absolutely fucking stupid that was. Oh yea Lucy, just eat the weird magic rocks that were keeping you restrained only moments ago. What could possibly go wrong? Wait, is this why they have those anti drug programs in school? Ah fuck, I hope I didn't just eat magic cocaine or something.

I keep tearing at my prison, freeing my left arm and allowing my upper half to move freely as the crystal on the back of my head just falls to the ground, somehow not snagging my hair. With both my hands free I start tearing into the crystal binding my legs.

It doesn't take much effort. Suddenly the remnants of the prison give way, and my leaning forward posture causes me to tumble forward and crash to the ground. I feel my tail go taught as part of it remains trapped by the crystal. Somehow I don't cut or impale myself on the crystal bits on the floor. I quickly reach back and give my tail a light yank, and after a moment it pops free completely. Albeit with a lot more weight at the end than normal.

I push off the ground and stand up, surprisingly feeling the crush and pop under my….. those aren't feet. I look down, and find all sorts of changes I wasn't, but deep down knew I should have been ready for.

My skin, as far as I can tell, now has a very light blue tint to it. And I think I got taller, a lot taller. The ceiling is so close the tops of my horns are probably just barely missing it. And my feet, well they aren't feet any more. A pair of what I can only describe as crystal hooves now exists below my ankle. And a lot of my skin seems to be replaced by smooth crystal as well. It's all crystal at the bottom, my new hooves and shins, slowly mixing with and turning to skin the further up my leg, becoming fully skin again just below my knee. Reaching down I run my hand down it, and to my surprise it has full sensation, even the all crystal parts. I lift my right leg and give my hoof experimental twists and bends, trying to get a feel for its range of motion. Which is apparently close to the same range of motion as a regular foot.

The whole experience leaves me a little rattled, but not nearly as much as it should have. I know I made the choice on the race upgrade, and as far as I know I didn't have a choice to refuse. But I still didn't expect this drastic of a change. But I feel calm as can be, more caught off guard than anything, and strangely feeling comfortable in my new body.

Knowing I should be freaked out but am not is honestly more jarring to me than the changes. Magic must be fucking with my head or something, Which would make sense, there would probably be huge problems with 'evolving' or whatever this is if things had a meltdown whenever it happened.

Moving on I give a few experimental stomps, finding my new hooves surprisingly comfortable to stand on. I pull my tail around to my front to examine its changes and in the process notice my wings have changed too. I'll check on those next.

My tail seems to have become laced with a thin line of crystal on the top that goes down from the base to the tip. But unlike my legs the rest is still skin. I take a quick moment to feel up my back as best I can, curious if the crystal keeps going. It does as far as I can tell, the line of crystal following my spine until it reaches my wings. From there I think it branches off both ways and connects to the wings, but I can't feel well enough to be entirely sure.

Back to my tail, the end is now tipped with a smooth oval shaped crystal. It's about twice as wide as the tail itself and about three and a half inches long. A stark contrast in length to my now almost five foot long tail. So this thing will let me shoot lasers and project shields, neat I guess. I'll have to figure all that out later.

Moving on to my wings, the changes are just as drastic. They are still the same proportional size and shape as far as I can tell. I've definitely gotten taller, I don't know the height of the parking deck, but I guess I'm at least seven feet freaking tall now! So not only are my wings bigger because I am, they are now also covered in glittering crystals. Unlike my feet though, they still have a lot of skin. About half skin and half crystal. I try to stretch them out fully, but can't due to the parked cars, debris, and design of the parking garage.

I brush my hand over my horns, finding them shaped the same, but feeling like they are made of crystal now. I grab a lock of my hair and pull it around. My hair escaped mostly unscathed, now having golden highlights in addition to my blonde. Not a bad look actually, might be able to rock it with the disguise. After all, the best lies are founded with a kernel of truth, or something like that.

So, I've gotten bigger, coated with shiny and probably magic rocks, and am possibly even more screwed. Or at least I would be if I didn't grab the legendary mimicry upgrade. I'm also fully naked but that's the least of my concerns right now. I wonder if mimicry will let me shapeshift fake clothes. I give the spell a poke and am promptly met with a hard no. Well darn, it was worth a shot. Speaking of spells and magic, I pull up my stats window while doing some stretches.

image

And promptly stop dead mid stretch at what greets me. Holy hell where did all these numbers come from? Where did I gain so much power level from? Was it the legendary stuff? No, I feel like it would have mentioned it if it was. Just being around the carnage maybe?

I'm tempted to open up the store page and see what is available. But I think finding a way out takes priority right now. I can't sense anything with my essence sensing right now. I'm not sure exactly how big, but the range is pretty big now.

So I've got some time, which I don't plan on wasting. As much as I want to spend my points, I think I'm going to hold off unless I absolutely have to. I feel I should maybe get some professional input on how to use them before I run myself into the ground. Especially with how even more skewed towards attunement my build is now. But first to get out of here.

Since the area around me is clear as far as I can tell, the first thing I do is sit down and start recreating my support crystals. I start with healing, but to my somewhat surprise I can't do it. Checking the link, I can feel the crystal still active somewhere far off in the distance. It's so far I can't even tell how far, just that it's active. That's a good sign, maybe Robert's group is still alive. Or the crystal is still trapped in the vault with the corpses. That's a depressing prospect, so I'm going to hope it's the first one.

Since healing is out of the question I remake my mana crystal instead. While it slowly comes together I think back over the last few days, specifically the end. I… don't really remember what happened. I mean I do but, it's all hazy at best. I remember I stole a gun from the cultist's stockpile, because they are idiots who didn't watch their shit. Then I started shooting at one of the portal crystals. Obviously I hit it, or at least something important. Which I honestly had no right to given both the lord and that stupid gargoyle were there. Then again, the gargoyle seemed to only be second in command because he was the second strongest. And the lord was… chaotic. Fucking around because he was bored even up until the end. Hubris, apparently man and demon's downfall.

I've probably used all my luck for the rest of my life. So on that note, I probably shouldn't push it any more. Especially since I'm pretty sure that lord isn't dead, and demons are professional grudge holders. I feel like I would have gotten credit or something if the lord died. Then again maybe collateral doesn't count?

I finish up my mana crystal and it drifts up into a lazy orbit around me. Next I start on the shield crystal.

Either way, I've got a different kind of target on my back now probably. I don't know if anyone else has ever gotten a legendary, let's call it an announcement. Regardless of if someone has or hasn't, I'm going to have to answer A LOT of questions if anyone saw that message. And I'm not betting on no one having seen it.

So the question then becomes, has anyone ever gotten a legendary point before and somehow kept it a secret? I could totally see something like that happening over on the war front and then being covered up. But at the same time, it would probably be very hard to cover something like that up depending on how many people got the message.

If it has happened before, I'll need to be extra careful in how I explain things. If it hasn't, I'll have a little more leeway to bullshit.

And all this isn't even getting into the fact that I'm guild-less, a relatively low power level, and a healer. I have options, people know that. People are also greedy, stupid, and selfish. I've got a target on my back, plain and simple. Granted it's not a target for murder or anything. But Healers Inc has already proven that people don't play nice when they want things. And I or my family, damn well could end up as collateral if guilds fight over me. Not to toot my own horn, but I've read plenty of history where humans started massive shit over smaller things.

The shield crystal finishes and floats up lazily to orbit around me, the mana crystal adjusting its position as the ethereal barrier snaps in place. Next is the stamina crystal, because might as well.

The too long, didn't read of the situation, I'm out of one frying pan and into another fire. Thankfully, now mimicry should allow me to remain undetected as a demon by magical and mundane means. But that won't blow away all suspicion. Demons have been found disguised as humans before. Mostly changlings, but the other occasional high level demon has snuck its way into society. So I'm sure they have other methods aside from scanners.

But, I'm not contributing to the fall of humanity or a cultist or anything, so I'll probably be fine in that regard. Hopefully I don't trigger too many red flags.

The stamina crystal finishes and floats up to join the others. When it connects to me I feel what can be best described as a perpetual pleasant breeze wash over me, just without any wind. I debate looking into starting the new booster crystal or not, but decide against it. Though one is going to be a long term project, no sense starting here.

I stretch myself out again and take another look around. I might never have quiet alone time like this again, so I might as well take the opportunity to test some things. First, my new tail spells.

I bring my tail back up and reexamine it. Nothing has changed of course, but I ponder how exactly do I use the built in spells. Do I just….?

I think about my tail, and wanting to shoot a beam. I feel something click, and stupidly push a little mana towards it. Just a smidge, maybe a couple hundred at most.

The crystal on the end of my tail lightly pulses with an energy wave. Then a blur beam shoots out with a loud PEW sound, striking the ceiling and scorching it lightly as I fall back on my ass in surprise.

Thank god I had it pointed away from my face! I've got a magic gun strapped to my ass effectively. That was only a pulse, but I remember the spell talking about mana supplied a second. Time for another test!

This time I make sure to point my tail well away from me before starting. I channel the smallest amount of mana into it, I'm talking maybe ten a second, while thinking about another beam. As expected, the crystal pulses for a second before a weak beam is fired from the tip. This time however I don't cut the mana feed, keeping it going to see what happens. The beam continues, though its so weak it doesn't seem to do any damage to anything. I carefully flick it to the rear driver window of a poor blue sedan parked next to me. The beam collides with the window, but doesn't leave any lasting damage. It seems to keep going as long as I keep supplying. Next start slowly increasing the mana supply, ten a second, eleven, twelve, etc….

At about the thirty mana a second mark the beam starts to visibly eat through the window, before punching through and slamming into the interior of the car, which starts to also get eaten away. I cut the power, satisfied with my findings and not looking to do any more property damage. Thinking about it, shooting a car probably wasn't a great idea, but meh. The owner is unfortunately, probably dead anyway.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

Next I try the shield function, the problem is I have no idea how it works, as in how the shield works. Still, I think of projecting a shield as large as me in front of me, pushing twenty mana a second into the spell as my tail crystal flashes. A beam shoots out, at the end of which is a flat, mostly opaque shield as tall and wide as me projects out in front of me straight from my tail crystal. It's clearly anchored to the tail crystal, as twisting and shifting the crystal causes the shield to move accordingly. On a hunch I think about changing the size of the shield, it shifts and reforms into a side long pattern instead.

On another hunch I think about moving the shield without moving my tail. To my surprise I find it able to be moved closer or farther without issue, as well as rotate it as much as I want. So long as it stays connected to the supplying beam coming from my crystal it seems to be fair game. One thing I notice quickly though is that the shield collides with anything physical as well.

I cut off the shield, satisfied with my findings for now. A neat spell to be sure, and one that will probably come in handy at some point. Knowing my luck I'll need it sooner rather than later.

And now for the final spell, though I can't really test it that well. Funny enough healing spells only really work on injured people, and I'm currently as fine as…. Something, either way I'm not injured.

Still, in the spirit of making sure everything is at least preliminarily tested I pull my tail up and point it at myself. A small push of mana and a thought about healing results in a little red beam coming out, almost feeling like it's flowing. It tingles, almost tickles in a way. I shift the beam all over myself and find the sensation does not change. Pulling it off and pointing it into the air reveals the beam starts to dissipate at about the two foot mark, completely disappearing by about four and a half feet. Interesting, I wonder if proximity is important, or if it's just visual.

Either way, I will probably never find out because like hell I'm pulling this out to use on people. Might as well write 'shoot me' on my own forehead if I do that.

I give a final good stretch as I decide I'm content with my current level of experimentation. Now to get out of here, which I have a sneaking suspicion will be way easier said than done.

I reach down and grab a few crystals to keep in my off hand. Maybe someone smarter than me can figure out what they are and if they are useful. Then I start my march. The parking garage has definitely seen better days, that much is apparent while I make my way towards the upward ramp.

The smell of stagnant water, mold, and something I can't quite identify fills the air. Several portions of the floor above have collapsed down onto this one, and the ramp leading up is cracked in half and drooping. The area is dead silent aside from the dinking clomp of my hooves and the occasional drip of water. All around me cars sit abandoned in their parking spots, some with damage from the partial collapse of the place, some seemingly untouched. Cracks run across the floor, seemingly threatening collapse with every step I take.

I pass a buckled support column, partially collapsed into the remains of a pickup truck. Said truck now acting as the lower half of the support now, keeping the sagging and decrepit roof from caving in completely. It's a bloody wonder this place hasn't collapsed on my head already. And I have no plans on sticking around long enough to give it the chance.

I get to the bottom of the ramp, which is the usual style where the road wraps around to continue down. Except the floor below is flooded, the water coming three fourths of the way up the ramp. I also discover where the smell is coming from. Half of something is just floating in the murky water. Judging by its shape and the spikes adorning it, it was at one point a demon. What kind of demon I can't tell.

I start heading up, carefully sticking to the side of the ramp that isn't collapsed and drooping. At the top I find more of the same scene, caved in roof parts, buckled support columns, dinged up cars. But I do spot the next ramp up next to me, its exit sign hanging from the ceiling by its wires, flickering and barely holding on with what batteries it has left. Thankfully this ramp is more or less in one piece, but still has plenty of concerning cracks running through it.

The next floor up is much the same as the last two, shit condition. I still haven't sensed anything with my horns, though for all I know essence sensing could have changed how it works or something. I should probably check on that actually, make sure the rest of my skills, spells, and whatnot didn't get touched.

I find a nice spot on the hood of a fancy looking old sports car and sit down, then pull open and check everything.

imageimageimageimageimageimage

Hmmm, looks like the tail crystal is considered a passive, which is…. Ok maybe that makes some sense. The crystal itself is always there. Mimicry's description got updated, and both it and resurrection have the yellow gold as their backgrounds. I guess that's to distinguish them as legendary.

All in all everything looks to be in order, new skills are slotted in. I'm tempted again to check the store and see what I can buy. But I push those thoughts to the side for now. I can't dally down here on a shopping spree when the roof could fall on me at any moment. That and I should get professional opinions before I spend anything unless I have to.

I hop off the car and turn to head up the ramp, only this time I find it blocked by a collapse of the floor above. And judging by how much debris I can see blocking the ramp, I ain't getting up this way. The good news, car parks should have multiple stairwells for emergency exits. The bad news, if the floor above collapsed there is no guarantee they are intact. Though I remember hearing somewhere that elevators and stairwells are supposed to be the toughest parts of buildings.

I let out a huff and lightly stomp my hoof in annoyance, which I realize I did only after the fact. Keep it together Lucy, you aren't full demon crazy yet.

I break off from the ramp and start searching the rest of the floor for a way out. I initially don't see any indicators, but as I weave through the rows of cars I spot what looks to be a dimly flickering exit sign on the edge of the level. Making my way over I find out why its flickering. The sign is hanging from the ceiling by its wires, the roof cracked where the sign was once mounted.

It's a stairwell next to an elevator, which gives me hope that at least one of them is clear enough to ascend. That hope is cut in half when I try the stairwell door and find it wont open. A look through the metal mesh reinforced window reveals its completely collapsed. No way I'm getting this open unless I maybe cut it with my tail. But even then I don't think trying to cut my way up through the remains of the stairs is a good idea.

So instead I turn my attention to the elevator, which from the outside doors looks to be undamaged. I jam my hands in between the doors and pull them apart. They do the usual open two inches before stopping, so I start applying more force. After a moment I hear a slight groan, then a pop, and the doors slide open completely.

The good news, I can see what I'm hoping is sunlight at the top of the shaft about two floors up. And the elevator is on the floor below me. The bad news, the shaft is bent at a like sixty degree angle halfway between me and the top floor, which is where the sunlight is coming from. Even better news, I have a built-in flashlight and can fly, though it will be a tight fit with the remains of the elevator rails, cables, and rebar sticking into the shaft.

I push off and activate my flight magic, slowly ascending the shaft in an attempt to not disturb what I suspect is a very unstable structure. I approached the battered bend and it instantly became apparent that I wasn't going to fit in my current form. The extra size from my new form made me just a little too big to slip between the wall and bent out of shape rebar jutting from the bend. Well, good time as any to shift back to being human I suppose. I still don't sense anything alive around me, but there could be drones or other things.

With barely a thought I shift away my everything, retracting my tail and wings as the crystal seems to sink into my body and skin regrows in its place. My hooves shift and contort, a funny feeling as they reshape into human feet and regrow skin. My body as a whole shrinks, and I literally feel myself getting smaller in relation to the rest of the world, which is a trippy experience. I keep my horns, keen on using my essence sensing until I get to the top, just in case. I'll shift them away before I step out.

Now small enough I barely fit through the gap, scrapping ever so lighting against the wall and rebar but otherwise making it through unimpeded. Awaiting me at the top is another set of doors to exit the shaft. Though these are lopsided and warped a little, cracked enough at the bottom to allow sunlight to seep in. With no better way out I put my feet on the edges of the frame and brace myself. I shift away my horns and heave, throwing my full strength into pulling them open. A groan, then a pop, and the doors move about an inch before stopping with a clunk. But after another moment of pushing it's clear it's not moving anymore. I readjust myself to only pull on the right door, then yank again. This time it moves just the tiniest amount while letting out a loud metallic scraping sound.

But that's all I manage to get from it, as more yanks and tugs do nothing to it. I thought elevator doors were supposed to be cheap flimsy shit. These damn things can apparently withstand a god damn demon yanking on them. Maybe I shoulda hid here when this shit show started.

I try the left door, and manage to also get it to open a little more after some motivation and a bit of metallic screeching. This leaves me with an approximately four inch wide gap to work with. I float down and stick my head up to the gap to get a look outside. I don't like what I see, the remains of a destroyed city laid out before me. Shimerview looks like it was put through hell, buildings falling out, the street cracked and jagged outcroppings sticking up out of the sidewalk as buildings cling to life on the edges of miniature cliffs. The hell happened? Did the portal failing do that?

I shake my head and look back to the door. I give it a good test whack to see how effective brute forcing it might be. To my not surprise, my hand comes back stinging, and the door seems unphased. Good thing I didn't smack it as hard as I could.

Well, the door is apparently built to last, and doesn't seem to want to move anymore. So I guess I have to work with the space I have. Which isn't a whole lot. But maybe I can make myself smaller, instead of the hole bigger. And I wonder if mimicry can help with that? Only one way to find out.

I think of the smallest fantasy I know of, a fairy. The super small kind that almost look like floating balls of light. Mimicry responds and I feel myself start to shrink down even more. Most of my body stays the same aside from shrinking, but two sets of wings sprout from my back and begin to grow. I keep getting smaller, the world around me becomes more imposing, bits of rock and concrete slowly become boulders, while twisted metal changes from a minor annoyance to a real danger of impalement. Finally it stops and I've shrunken down to only like seven inches in height, a bit bigger than I expected but still work able. I'm also barely holding onto the crystal I brought with me. The wings on my back flutter to life and start to glow, feeling real and even being controllable. They're also literally as big as the rest of my body. But deep down I know they're fake.

It wasn't joking when it said . I guess fairies are a real race after all. I wonder if they exist in our universe, or like some other magical plane of existence or something. Either way this works for me. I float up to the crack in the door and slip through with no issues, my faux fairy wings automatically rapidly fluttering behind me to give the illusion they are providing the power. Except they aren't because they are fake. I guess that's a part of mimicry now, copying not just the form but also imitating everything else that comes with.

I breach out into the light, and have to hold my hand up to shield my eyes. I hear my crystals clink around behind me as they to squeeze through the narrow opening. It takes my eyes a few moments to adjust. Going from near total darkness to the sun beating down on you like you owe it lunch money tends to do that. But after a few blinks I can finally see the city, what's left of it anyways. It's not pretty, and is arguably even worse than it looked from inside. Streets are cracked, earth shifted like kids were playing in a sandbox and just shoving it around. Entire blocks are just collapsed or burnt out around me. Giant fissures cut through buildings, sidewalks, and roadways with no regard for what was destroyed.

And I have no idea where the hell I am in what's left. I don't recognize the buildings here, and the road signs at the various intersections aren't hanging around because the stoplight poles have all been blown over. Shimerview had a few car parks in it, but for obvious reasons I don't have every random car park in the city memorized.

I turn around to see if I can find any identifying features, only to discover the upper levels of the car park have collapsed to the ground. The only reason the elevator shaft isn't buried is because the shift and angling tore it away from the building just enough to avoid the crushening. And the only reason the door isn't buried is because this is one of those fancy enter on one side, exit on the other elevators.

So, no idea where I am, no idea where anyone else is, and no way to communicate with anyone. I could just try walking or flying in a direction until I find some, but that seems suspicious as shit. Imagine some naked chick floating down to your group and going 'hey, demons ate all my shit and I've been unconscious and stuck underground for god knows how long, can I get some help?'

Actually that might not be as bad as I initially thought, but still be embarrassing as hell though because I am in fact still naked. I wonder how often defenders actually end up naked. I've read that most non magical gear ends up easily destroyed by demons and magic. This has led on occasion to more than a few improper photos of both random and famous defenders circulating for a while after a wardrobe failure. Something I'm exactly keen on happening to me.

Still, walking along the streets alone and naked is suspicious as fuck, and I have no idea how anal they are about airspace intrusions. The last thing I need is to take off and immediately get a S.A.M up my ass.

But it's not like I have many other options. I've got nothing on me and none of my magic, aside from maybe the tail beam, can produce something attention grabbing to signal my position. Wait…. Magic, duh. I've got the magic shop still, and I remember a particular spell being available before, and should still be.

imageimageimageimageimage

Ho boy that's a lot of new stuff. I skim over most of it, now isn't the time for shopping. Initially in my haste I miss the spell I'm looking for, not recognizing it initially. But on my back track I catch it and read it thoroughly just to be sure. Bingo, magic flare.

image

And with a click of the yes button I'm now the proud owner of a new spell. So much for not buying anything.

I take a deep breath and transfer the strange crystal I brought with me to my off hand. I raise my hand to the sky and draw on my mana while thinking about my newly bought spell. A ball of golden light quickly forming in my hand before rocketing into the sky with a screeching whizzing noise.

Up and up it goes, farther and farther into the air. It leaves behind it a trail of golden light particles that seem to just float in the air, radiating enough that they are visible even in the noon daylight. But weirdly not so bright that they hurt to look at. The flair just keeps going up, and I start to wonder if it's ever going to do anything else when it suddenly explodes. Like an oversized firecracker, a loud pop washes over the city. Now I just wait, I guess.

An errant thought crosses my mind as I sit down on the remains of a concrete bench and shift back to human form, crossing my legs and covering breasts in an attempt to save what little dignity I have left. What happens if they try to disappear me to a black site? But I shove it away. This is a way to open for someone to try something, no one is that dumb…… right?
