The NU Demon

Chapter 62: Somewhat Awake, Probably Alive

I don't normally interfere with experiments, it defeats the purpose. But for you… I'll make an exception. Let us see where you will go, little one.

……………..

The whispers startle me awake. And just as quickly their meaning slips through my grasp. My eyes snap open and I flail about, swinging wildly to try and defend myself. Except there is nothing here. Absolutely nothing, except an endless white void. What the fuck was that? Where the hell am I?

I'm floating in…. I don't know. I flail about to try and move but nothing happens. I open my mouth to scream, and while I feel the sound leave me, I can't hear it. All I can hear is my own heartbeat. Then I realize I'm not breathing either, but I don't feel like I'm suffocating, just…. Existing.

Am I dead? I must be dead. The last thing I remember is pulling a trigger, but even that is hazy. I know everything hurt, but now….. Nothing. Well shit, now what?

As if it was waiting for that to be its queue, magic responds by putting a fucking popup directly in front of me out of no where. Not in my vision, literally in front of me like maybe five feet out!

image

Scream in surprise and flail about for a moment, before realizing its just a harmless screen. God damn it, can it not fucking do that?! And where I have seen this before? I feel like I've seen this before. But before I can figure out where, the magic starts talking.

Greetings once again, and congratulations on your acquisition of your first Title!

Initiating Titles Tutorial.

image

Currently shown is your titles page, where you can view your obtained and active titles.

Additionally, from here you can choose to enable or disable your title display.

Title display projects your name and title so that those who look at you see them without the need for identification aids.

image

Disabling title projecting may be done by thinking of doing so, even without the corresponding MIS window open. Additionally, title projection may be disabled by touching the title projection enabled/disabled status like a button in the window, or by verbally stating such.

Warning: as others cannot see your MIS windows touching air and saying commands aloud may result in user looking schizophrenic and/or insane.

Titles are magical preeminences attached to your name.

Titles come in prefix and suffix form.

You may have only one prefix and one suffix active at a time.

Titles may grant various bonuses based on their method of acquisition and the feat they relate to.

For example, a title relating to a place may give bonuses while in that place.

Another example, a title relating to an action may give bonuses when performing that or similar actions.

Your prefix titles can be found in this column.

image

And your suffix titles can be found in this column.

The effects provided by each title can be found in the adjoining sub column.

image

The selected active prefix and suffix titles can be found in sub boxes above their corresponding columns.

To set a title as active, simply think, say aloud or touch the corresponding title in your MIS window.

Currently you have only one title, please select this title as your active title and then enable title projection to confirm proficiency.

I let out a sigh, or as much of one as I can in this non real space. Here we go again with the unsolicited tutorials. Except now I'm aware that arguing with magic is pointless. What the hell even happened? Titles? legendary points? I've never heard of any of these things.

Then again humanity doesn't know much about magic really. What did I even do to earn this kind of crap? Lets see, last I remember I shot, or tried to shoot, something. I remember aiming for one of the demon gate crystals, then everything hurting, and…. I think I did it?

Holy shit that has to be it! Even if I'm dead I fucking did it! In your face stupid ass demon lord!

I flail about in celebration while laughing to myself. It says I survived, even if barely. But let's be real, that's probably on technicality. I was barely alive when the crystal got shot. But I probably died a millisecond later to an angry demon lord not happy I broke his toys.

So now I'm dead I guess. Then what is all this? Maybe magic tying off loose ends. At least my family and friends are probably ok. And if they did survive they won't have to worry about another super portal.

Well, let's get this over with.

Congratulations! Your Proficiency with MIS grows!

Final notes: While the acquisition of a title may seem a daunting task. Currently held titles and legendary acquisitions do not factor against you in the calculations for the obtainment of titles.

Simply put, obtaining new titles is easier (in theory) after obtaining one.

Additionally you may gain as many titles as you wish, and titles will never be lost except for specific niche cases.

May your power continue to grow! Thank you for using MIS!

Well, at least that wasn't as long and tedious as the introduction tutorial. And twenty percent, that's a damn good boost. Good enough to die over apparently. But that brings up the question of what will count as healing or defensive spells? Healing is pretty obvious, but defensive not so much. Does it count shield spells? The shield crystal? Stat buffs? I've also hear of defensive spells straight up mitigating a set amount of hits as long as they aren't to overpowered.

I'm getting off topic, if I go down this rabbit hole now I'll be here forever. So now for the…..

Initiating Legendary Module Tutorial.

Greetings once again, and congratulations on your acquisition of your first legendary point!

Legendary points are many things. Keys of power, proof of deed, tokens of greatness among many others.

Legendary points most often are granted by managing to perform feats of true impressiveness.

You are much more likely to receive a point for feats accomplished outside your skill set

An example, a healer may receive a point for defeating a seemingly undefeatable foe, but a warrior may not.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to the original site for the genuine story.

Likewise a healer may not receive a point for curing a nation destroying plague, but a warrior may.

Feats incredible enough will be rewarded regardless.

For example, slaying a god or demon lord.

Other ways of obtaining points include bonuses from lineage or being granted by a greater being.

This may be a daunting prospect, as you have no doubt already discovered, but rest assured the entry barrier is the hardest to overcome.

Subsequent legendary points, like titles, do not use current titles or legendary point acquisitions against you in calculations for obtaining a new legendary point.

There are three kinds of legendary points, minor, normal, and greater.

Minor legendary points are most often granted through impressive feats outside the scope of tour abilities that would otherwise not be legendary point worthy.

These points contribute to your magic and skills, allowing you to select legendary skills, spells, and more to augment your magic skill set with powerful and seemingly rule-breaking additions.

Normal legendary points, or just legendary points, are a step up from minor points and thus harder to obtain, but have a more profound impact. Normal points are most often granted for legendary feats that cause long standing impact on a grand scale.

These points contribute to your race's evolution and integration with magic, allowing you to alter yourself to better adapt and use magic. These changes may even carry over to your lineage.

Greater legendary points are also known as divinity points. How are they obtained? What are they used for? You will just have to obtain one to find out. Or ask a being who already knows.

image

The legendary window is broken up into sections based on point type. After selecting an option you will need to confirm it by selecting it again.

Simply navigate between windows as you would in the magic store.

You cannot leave this screen until all points are used. This page will no longer be available after closing until acquiring more legendary points. Unselected options may not be available the next time you visit this page, so choose wisely!

This concludes the legendary module tutorial, good luck! And thank you for using MIS!

That…. was a lot to unpack. Divinity points, ask a being who already knows. Basically an admission that gods are real. Which is a terrifying prospect for every reason imaginable. Do demons have gods? No, it mentioned demon lords as a separate thing when it mentioned killing them or gods for points. Who in there right fucking mind would kill a god? Are they even really a god if they can be killed?

Stepping past that to the other stuff. Legendary spells, and race upgrades. I'm both excited and a little scared. The race thing could be an opportunity to go back to being human, or at least something closer. But given how shit things have been going for me recently I'm not holding my breath.

I swap through seven pages until I get to the last one. You would think that something as radical racial upgrades would be like a completely separate process. But no, they do each however, get their own page, all four of them.

Well that's a bit underwhelming, then again I only have one point to spend. Still, looking over the options doesn't leave me hopeful.

Yea, nothing in here about returning to being human. Because fuck me I guess. Stupid asshole magic. I take an angry swing at the screen but my fist just phases through it.

Nothing happens for a few more moments, so I just let out an angry growl and decide to keep going. The sooner this shit is dealt with the sooner I get to either be fully dead or alive. And at this point I hold an equal preference for both.

I'm not deciding on race upgrade yet. I should see what my options are for the minor points. Especially since apparently it resets the options or something if I ever need to revisit the page So I flip back to the very beginning of the list.

And yea I will admit, most of these are awesome. The lust sin skill set is a hard fucking no. I ain't trying to cosplay as a soul sucking demonic bitch and I don't plan on starting. Secondary mana pool sounds cool, though it's just a fifty percent bonus to mana that I happen to be able to give out freely. I already have mana surge for that.

Bypass cool downs could be overpowered as fuck. Then again so could granting everyone around me natural flight magic they don't need to pay to use. The support aura seems underwhelming at first glance, but it does so much stuff, for free basically. The greater ritual cast is, I'll admit not my cup of tea. But I can still see that being bonkers with the right spells. Entire battlefield of wounded soldiers, bam mass super heal. Shit load of demons being a pain, single target nuke spell on a massive scale to just wipe them all away.

Not that I plan on playing dps and actually fighting. I've done too much of that shit already. Thank you very much, except not really.

That leads me to the last two, the legendary mimicry upgrade, and lesser resurrection. I honestly don't know if I can pass over either of these two. Yes, resurrection is expensive, but bringing the dead back to life ain't gonna be cheap. I don't know of anyone with the ability to regenerate organs and limbs, much less bring back the dead. Yes it's a ten minute window, that just means I'll have to be close enough. They may suffer penalties, but it's better than being dead!

And then there is mimicry's legendary upgrade. Changing appearance, any race I want. Impossible to break or see through by normal means. I need this one for my own safety. But the rest are so good. It's almost like these are legendary picks or something.

I have to narrow my options, which is easy enough for most of them. Flight is out, so are cool downs. Yea they are cool but i feel like i can get more from the other stuff. Mana pool is a no go, I already have mana surge. The lust skill set was never an option. And Ill have to say no to the ritual casting because yes it's cool, but again other stuff seems better for me.

That leaves me with three options. Resurrection, support auras, and the mimicry upgrade. And I'll admit I'm biting my tongue thinking about this one. Support aura is so much stuff, for free, twenty four seven. And I legit wonder if regeneration means like regrowing fingers, limbs, and organs. Mimicry upgrade is important because I can't make use of the other two if the whole planet wants me dead. Who would trust a demon to heal or resurrect them?

Actually, there probably are some crazies who would go for the resurrection. People do extreme things when they are desperate. And resurrection is on the table because well, its resurrection. Middle finger to death itself isn't something to take lightly.

In the end that's what sways my decision the most, the threat of death. Support aura is nice, but I can't make use of it if I'm dead. So legendary mimicry and resurrection it is.

Are you sure you wish to select Legendary Upgrade: Mimicry?

Yes/No

Yes.

Are you sure you wish to select Lesser Resurrection?

Yes/No

Yes.

And with that I feel something inside me shift. For an infinitesimal moment, and then it's gone. And with it the store pages for magic, leaving me with just the pages remaining for race upgrades. Might as well just get this over with.

Looking over the options again I'm still not super enthused, but that at least makes selection easier. Sin Nu is out, not touching that with a hundred foot pole. I'm not going with blood Nu, I've done enough fighting, and I'm a healer, not a fighter. Also having claws doesn't sound cool at all.

That leaves Crystal Nu and Sky Nu. And Sky Nu isn't quite up my alley. I haven't really traveled much in my life, just a few times. I don't plan to start, and definitely don't think its worth dedicating a race upgrade to. So that leaves Crystal Nu, which honestly is a good fit. Guess my theme is going to be crystals. Not that I have any complaints, little things are useful. I wonder if I can find a way to accessorize them.

Either way that booster crystal will be amazing and invaluable in the long run if I keep with the crystals. Don't know how I feel about a tail crystal though. I suppose the utility would be nice. The healing is a bit redundant, but a defensive shield and a new attack that isn't just yelling at something aggressively with magic is an improvement.

It's not really much of a debate in my mind, the bonus control crystal alone will make this the pick if my options stick with crystal stuff. Which after this upgrade, I have a sneaking suspicion they will.

Are you sure you wish to select Crystal Nu?

Yes/No

Yes…..

Legendary selection process complete. Thank you for using MIS.

Alert: As the progenitor of your race with no living offspring, changes are merged to become the main race line.

Actioning changes and releasing user. You may suffer some discomfort and feel disorientation for up to twenty four hours after changes.

The screen in front of me blinks out of existence, leaving me floating in the void with nothing.

Then I start to feel the tingling all over, small at first barely noticeable. But it quickly gets worse, and elevates to a point that I can't just ignore it. Slowly I start to get fidgety, seemingly unable to do anything. I try to cast a heal spell on myself, but nothing happens. When I try to open my stats screen I'm met with the empty white surrounding me. Before I can curse to my self, and at magic, it escalates, rapidly growing into an itch all over that I can't scratch no matter how hard I try.

And it keeps going, growing, hurting. I'm scratching so hard I'm drawing blood, which oozes out of the wounds as a purple and red liquid that runs down my body. When it drips off it seems to just vanish into the whiteness.

I thrash as it continues, feeling like a fire slowly growing in my veins and burning its way through my body until I can't take it any more. My eyes roll back, everything goes black.
