Chapter 295: Beaten to the Punch?
The conversation ended quickly.
Whether it was because the vast amount of information needed time to digest or because the senator's time was too costly to linger, Earl Kalan Watus didn't keep Luo Yan talking for long.
After confirming that the "servant caught in the storm" mentioned by Luo Yan was not in any danger, the elegant and composed director stood up to see him off, personally escorting Luo Yan to the door.
However, just as he reached for the doorknob, intending to open the door for Luo Yan, a dull thud transmitted through the knob—
There seemed to be a not-so-clever ear hidden behind the door.
"—Ouch!"
With a short plaintive cry, a pink-haired girl fell to the ground, landed on her rear, her nose turning bright red, tears almost streaming down from the pain.
It seems that even for an Enchanting Demon, the nose bridge is a fragile spot.
Looking at the "little ancestor" sitting on the floor, Earl Kalan's originally serene and calm face twitched slightly but he maintained his courteous smile.
"Miss Mia, I think...you might have mistaken the door, right?"
Mia initially opened her mouth unsure of how to explain, but upon being given an out, she promptly took advantage of it.
"I, I...certainly did!"
Eavesdropping on the conversation between the director and the Demon King was quite a serious disciplinary issue, under normal circumstances any other demon would have to report to the funeral home in the suburb the next day...but she's Feistin's daughter, and Kalan and that gentleman were old acquaintances, always treating Mia as if she were half a daughter.
With a meaningful glance at Mia, Kalan left behind a light "No more of this" admonition, then bid farewell to a visibly worried Luo Yan and turned to leave.
Only after the Earl's silhouette disappeared down the corridor did Luo Yan turn his gaze to the Enchanting Demon Miss whose cheeks were flush with embarrassment...he never imagined she would be shy.
Running around in the home garden, he thought she'd be more unabashed.
"You're quite daring, even daring to eavesdrop on your boss's door." As he extended a hand to pull Mia up from the ground, Luo Yan chuckled and teased.
"I was waiting too long," brushing dust off her clothes, Mia slumped her shoulders, lowered her head in grievance, and muttered while kicking her heels, "You were taken away as soon as you returned, stayed behind the door for ages without coming out..."
The real reason she was too embarrassed to say.
Earl Kalan Watus usually rarely appeared at the Demon King Management Department, and each appearance meant something serious was happening.
Seeing Luo Yan being taken away, she instinctively didn't think it would end well.
Especially since Luo Yan never told her anything, only after everything ended did she suddenly realize the terrifying danger he'd faced.
In a moment of panic, she resorted to such measures, only to find her ear abruptly collided with the door panel.
Under normal circumstances, no matter how unruly she might be, she wouldn't go so far as to eavesdrop.
Who would've thought she'd be caught red-handed her first time trying it.
And by her father's old friend no less.
Now thinking about it, Mia couldn't help but feel discouraged, increasingly feeling useless...it's no wonder he doesn't tell her anything.
Luo Yan instinctively took out his pocket watch for a glance, saw that only ten minutes had passed, he intended to tease her but instead noticed those aggrieved eyes held more than just discomfort from her nose pain, there was something else.
Putting away the pocket watch, he placed his hand on Mia's head, gently patting it.
"Alright...I'm not blaming you."
Pausing for a moment, he continued.
"I didn't chat much with Earl Watus, he merely inquired about whether the great storm affected my Demon King Territory...because it involved subspace issues, Demon City is paying close attention, which isn't a bad thing for me."
Mia raised her head in confusion, not expecting Luo Yan to voluntarily tell her these matters clearly unrelated to her.
Why?
Could it be...he's worried about me?!
Wait!
How does he know?!
The blush burning on her cheeks climbed all the way to her ears, even making her voice stammer.
"You, you-you..."
"What about me?"
Mia hesitated for a while before softly speaking.
"Do you know Mind Reading Technique..."
Luo Yan was taken aback for half a second, then laughed.
"...What nonsense are you saying, there's no such magic."
In a world where spirit can interfere with matter, it's the sole domain not even divine beings can invade.
Mia's face turned entirely as red as a lantern, steam almost escaping from her ears; flustered, she diverted the topic, blurting out.
"Right, right, it's almost mealtime! You haven't had lunch yet, have you? How about...come to my house for dinner? My mom misses you."
As soon as she said this, she awkwardly clenched her toes, wishing she could find a hole to hide in and cover herself.
What does it mean my mom misses you...?
What kind of language is that?!
Luo Yan didn't think much of it, especially recalling there were indeed some matters he needed to discuss with Festin Padric, so he nodded in agreement.
"Alright, let's go."
"...Ah?"
Mia blinked, unexpected by his straightforward agreement, her expression holding a bit of...embarrassment.
"Then-let's go!"
She turned and ran a few steps, then as if remembering something, she buried her red face and returned to Luo Yan's side, walking with him side by side.
Perhaps Mia's unusual demeanor was too conspicuous, as they walked, several demonic colleagues cast curious—or perhaps gratified—glances their way.
