The King of Urban Mercenaries

Chapter 998: Wu Yufeng Outmatched

"Colonel, there's trouble, people are living in those old buildings!" came the report from the command room.

"How is that possible? That area has already been completely bought out, hasn't it? There shouldn't be any holdouts!"

Wu Yufeng couldn't believe it. Although he had considered the possibility of people being there, he still couldn't believe there were residents in a building complex due for demolition.

At this moment, the report officer explained, "Colonel, according to the information received, the area was indeed bought by real estate developers, but since it hasn't been demolished, many wanderers have taken it as their shelter."

"Damn it! Fuck! These bastards, getting in the way at this time!" Wu Yufeng couldn't help but curse.

"Colonel, what should we do next?" asked a communications officer beside him.

"Blow it up!" Wu Yufeng said angrily.

If it were a barren place with no people, he could easily capture everyone. But now that they have hostages, the situation is completely different.

"Uh..." The communications officer was startled; he didn't know how to respond.

Wu Yufeng also realized that acting rashly at this time was pointless. If he really blew up that place, he'd be on trial in military court the next day, and not even his father could save him.

"Send someone in to investigate first," Wu Yufeng said.

The communications officer breathed a sigh of relief, and then he relayed Wu Yufeng's orders down the chain.

On Li Fei's end, they hadn't caught up yet, but it seemed progress was not going well.

Because of the hostages, Wu Yufeng had no choice but to send SWAT teams close to those dilapidated buildings. Unfortunately, when one SWAT team got close to the building district, one officer stepped on a bomb and immediately turned into a rain of blood, leaving no remains.

"Colonel! The enemy has laid mines; we've already lost two soldiers!" the communications officer reported the latest battle update to Wu Yufeng.

Wu Yufeng slowly opened his eyes and said, "The country will remember their sacrifices. Order an immediate continuation of reconnaissance and mine clearing."

The order was quickly issued, but even with the demining unit, the enemy snipers from afar caused heavy casualties for Wu Yufeng's troops.

Upon hearing the latest intelligence, Wang Kai relayed it to Lin Fei. After listening, Lin Fei cursed, "What an idiot. This will just get our brothers killed in vain!"

"Boss, should I patch you through to the Colonel?"

"No need, we'll speak when we get there. After this setback, Wu Yufeng should be deterred for now," Lin Fei said.

Just as Lin Fei predicted, after several of his men were killed, Wu Yufeng finally regained his composure. He knew that storming in wouldn't work, and even if it did, he didn't have the capable subordinates to execute it.

Moreover, the soldiers who had already died were a humiliation for him. If the deaths continued, his position would be in jeopardy.

Wu Yufeng still wanted to use this event as an opportunity to prove to the higher-ups that he was better than Lin Fei. If the death toll was low, he could cover it up, but if the casualties were high, he wouldn't escape blame.

Time passed by the minute, as the glow of sunset gradually dimmed, and darkness was about to fall.

"Nighttime mine clearing? Clearly not feasible. Nighttime demining is extremely dangerous for mine-clearing soldiers, not to mention that the enemy has snipers," Wu Yufeng thought to himself.

"If only the Dragon Soul division were here, then none of these damned mercenaries would get out alive!"

But the Dragon Soul division wasn't here, and Wu Yufeng couldn't think of any other method. An assault wouldn't work, and other strategies weren't feasible either. What could he do? Was he really going to wait for the higher-ups to send someone down? Wouldn't that further confirm him as a failure, a useless person?

At this moment, while Wu Yufeng was annoyed, the communications officer suddenly brought a message saying an officer wanted to speak with him. Which boss could it be, Wu Yufeng wondered?

However, when he answered the call, a voice he detested immediately came through to his ears.

"Xiao Wu, you're out of your league, sending the brothers to jump into pits. I don't recall teaching you that," Lin Fei said in a condescending tone, scolding Wu Yufeng like an elder.

Wu Yufeng's face darkened, "Lin Fei, what do you want?!"

Lin Fei chuckled and said, "I don't want anything, just hoping that no more brothers get hurt or killed."

"Then tell me what to do," Wu Yufeng asked.

"What to do, let me think," Lin Fei said casually, then continued, "Hand over your command to me, and I'll handle this for you."

"In your dreams, I won't let you take command!" Wu Yufeng replied coldly.

"Alright then, I knew you wouldn't just obediently listen, but do you have a solution? If not, hand it over to me. I'm ordering you as your superior!"

Wu Yufeng gritted his teeth in anger, but he couldn't argue back. Lin Fei was right; Wu Yufeng had no solutions, and Lin Fei was indeed his superior.

Hearing Lin Fei's words, Wu Yufeng couldn't help but remember when Lin Fei slapped him in the face in front of everyone in the main city—it was the greatest humiliation he had ever suffered.

If the last time was an accident, then this time it was Wu Yufeng's inability to do anything else. In the end, he had no choice but to surrender command to Lin Fei.

By now, Lin Fei had arrived at the rundown building complex. He assessed the situation: six towering buildings were left in the area, surrounded by greenery. The place was slated for demolition, and the residents had all moved away, yet many wanderers, being homeless, elected to stay here.

However, without electricity or water, life was not easy here.

"Boss, what should we do?" Wang Kai couldn't help but ask.

Lin Fei looked at Wang Kai and countered, "What would you do if you were me?"

Wang Kai thought for a moment, then shook his head, "The enemy has planted mines around, and there're snipers keeping an eye from afar. I don't know what to do."

Lin Fei then extended his hand, pointing upward.

Wang Kai lifted his head to the sky, seeing nothing but the moon and a blanket of stars.

"You idiot, you're really dumb," Lin Fei remarked, giving Wang Kai's head a slap, making a soft thump, and causing Wang Kai to cry out in pain.

With a look of disdain, Lin Fei said, "I mean strike from above; immediately deploy six military helicopters for support."

"Damn it, why didn't I think of attacking from the sky!" Wu Yufeng cursed, realizing he had been wise but momentarily foolish.
