Chapter 96: The Idea is Prickly
The ants in front of them were so numerous they virtually seemed like a sea of smoke; even if the Emerald Bee Sword were ten times sharper, it would be of no use.
But Bi only needed the most basic level of telekinesis to easily push them aside, preventing them from coming anywhere close.
The ants surged towards the path cleared by telekinesis, much like the Yellow River pressing against its banks, desperately trying to break through.
As Li Changzhou and his group advanced, the black stream behind them closed in. From above, they would have appeared like a grain of rice on a black cloth or a small boat on a black river.
At this moment, if Bi were to release her telekinesis and fly up into the sky, the others would be immediately swallowed by the dark waters, leaving behind not even bones.
Under such pressure, not to mention the squirrel, even Li Qianxia felt her heart pounding with trepidation. For safety, she backed away once more to be by her older brother's side.
One reason, of course, was that Li Changzhou had a way to take her out of there, but more importantly, in the event of death, the siblings had to die together; she couldn't let her brother go alone.
"Those are fire ants," Yang Qinglan said, her eyes fixed on a small red island amidst the black river, "Being bitten feels like being burned, and severe cases can lead to shock and death."
"This one is the bullhead ant," she continued, "It has an extremely strong jumping ability, even capable of leaping to attack wasps."
"That's the big-toothed fierce ant, a natural big-toothed fierce ant that can bite its prey in 0.13 milliseconds, with a sudden burst of attack speed that's very fast."
"What is that?" Li Qianxia pointed at several ants the size of rolling drum washing machines.
Such size, one could say, was that of the giants among ants.
"They should be giant ants," Yang Qinglan surveyed them briefly, "the largest ants discovered by humans to date."
"How does this queen ant give birth to everything?" Bi frowned.
It wasn't fear of their strength that she felt, but a girl's aversion to insects.
Who can't kill a cockroach? Yet many people are so scared upon seeing one that they jump around frantically, comparable to prawns thrown into a hot pan.
This was a psychological issue.
"Maybe there were male ants of different species in the harem," Li Changzhou said with a laugh.
Yang Qinglan showed no interest in such colorful jokes and pondered, "Each type of ant possesses some extraordinarily unusual characteristics. Gathered together, they are even more formidable. Humans used to be the most successful life form evolved by nature, but it's hard to say who it will be in the future."
"I think it will still be humans," Li Qianxia said confidently about the future.
"...It might also be squirrels," the squirrel murmured quietly to itself.
The Polar Bear woman remained silent, unsure if she was unconcerned or worried about the children she'd left at home.
And speaking of which, were her children human or demons?
When it came to educating her kids, would she use the methods of polar bears or humans?
Was the father of her children doing well? Would they lead a marital life in the future? And if so, through what means?
Li Changzhou was beginning to not want to be a lawyer, but rather an animal scientist.
While he was daydreaming, Yang Qinglan continued, "Perhaps it's not any existing life form. The ancient myths about dragons were composite totems based on snakes, with the body of a snake, the head of a pig, the antlers of a deer, ears of a cow, whiskers of a goat, along with eagle claws and fish scales."
"Qing Lan, do you mean," Li Qianxia asked curiously, "that to win in the game, one needs to acquire the genes of various races?"
"Definitely," Yang Qinglan nodded, "but there are different dragons too, like the Azure Dragon, Yinglong, Chi, and so on. It depends on which dragon it is."
"Do we have to become that what dragon?" Bi frowned, her young face full of discontent.
As a princess of the Emperor, she naturally had no interest in the totems of other countries, and upon hearing that dragons would prevail, she felt even more resistance in her heart.
"That's why I tell you to read more," Yang Qinglan said indifferently, "The dragon here is not about having the specific appearance of a dragon; it represents a composite life form that possesses the abilities of various races."
Bi had a slew of curse words in her stomach, but she also felt the other person made so much sense... Perhaps she really should study more?
Unable to deal with this woman who always seemed to talk sense, Bi could only storm off to find her mount.
"Little Li, what do you think?" she turned her head to ask Li Changzhou.
Li Changzhou smiled, "I have confidence in myself."
As he was speaking, the black river suddenly parted to allow five ants to come close to the telekinetic shield.
This caught everyone's attention.
"What kind of ants are these?" Li Qianxia asked Yang Qinglan, who, in truth, hadn't read much herself.
Yang Qinglan couldn't identify them at first glance.
She wasn't an ant expert; there were over twelve thousand known species of ants, and it was impossible to remember each one distinctly, let alone identify them on the spot.
And considering she had to recognize not just ants but all kinds of animals.
It wasn't until those five ants' bodies contracted and boiling bubbles could be faintly seen in their swollen abdomens that she recognized what they were.
Not just her, but everyone who saw this felt an ominous premonition.
Yang Qinglan had no time for explanations; her eyes turned blue as she pushed one ant away and rapidly blinked to aim at the next.
It was too late.
The abdomens of the ants already showed a clear tendency to explode.
Bi rolled her lollipop with her tongue, drawing a strong suck, filling her mouth with sweetness and causing her telekinesis to surge.
She swung her arm out as if to swat a fly away.
Whoosh!
A wind as sharp as traversing an alleyway blew, her telekinesis sweeping in all directions and blowing all the ants away.
But her reaction was still too slow. Just as those few ants' feet left the ground, they exploded.
Liquid sprayed across the sky with high heat and toxicity, shooting towards the group.
Li Changzhou reached out with his left hand to shield Yang Qinglan behind him, and with a slight lift of his right elbow he pushed Li Qianxia behind him.
Three trails of gray mist from Yafeiluna formed a shield around his body at his command, encircling the people behind him.
