Chapter 7: Securing the Mind Stone
[Short chapter]
The moment we emerged from the portal, T'Challa rushed to meet us, his Panther suit glowing with kinetic energy. "Banner, Stark, Strange—you're late," he said, dodging an alien's blade.
"But we've got reinforcements—and no Thanos to back them up for now."
"The big bad is down?" T'Challa asked, raising an eyebrow beneath his mask.
"Contained," Strange clarified. "But we need to act quickly. Where's Vision?"
T'Challa responded. "He's in the lab, but I need more time to extract the Mind Stone safely. And it's not looking good out here."
I looked into the sky as rainbow lights came crashing down onto the ground... like the Bifrost...
I saw Thor, the Stormbreaker resting on his shoulders, and Groot who has Rocket perched upon his shoulder.
Thor's eyes glowed with lightning as he threw his Stormbreaker onto the masses of enemies. The fight just got a lot easier.
The battlefield froze momentarily as if the universe itself were surprised by the god of thunder's appearance. Thor extended his hand and summoned Stormbreaker back. It flew to him, leaving behind a string of molten craters.
Not wasting a second, Thor slammed Stormbreaker into the ground, releasing a circular wave of lightning that cleared the immediate area around us.
I smiled as I slowly transformed into my massive green state. I felt a sudden surge of anger in my nerves, my hormones acting up as the gamma radiation around me spiked up.
Thor was as depressed as he could be but the rage on his face was apparent, flipping Stormbreaker effortlessly in his hand. "Thanos!" he shouted, charging straight into another horde of enemies.
Meanwhile, I let out a roar as the transformation overtook me completely,
I caught an alien brute mid-charge, slamming him into the ground hard enough to send a shockwave rippling outward. The smaller enemies nearby stumbled, and I didn't hesitate to follow up, swiping them away like flies with a single swing of my arm. I didn't need to know how to fight for these basic things.
Rocket's voice cut through the noise. "Now that's what I'm talkin' about! Big green guy, I don't know who... knows how to make an entrance!"
"I am Groot!" Groot exclaimed, smashing through enemies with his massive limbs.
"Yeah, yeah, you're amazing too, buddy," Rocket replied. "Let's not get overshadowed by the tough competition, alright?"
Thor wasn't paying attention to any of us. "Where is he?" Thor said aggressively. "Thanos!" His eyes burned with fury, and honestly, I was glad not to be on the receiving end of that rage.
"Thor! Focus on the big picture here!" I shouted, tossing the last of the Outriders in my immediate path. "Thanos isn't coming for this fight. Strange and Stark made sure of it."
Thor paused just long enough to shoot me a look, his expression somewhere between disbelief and annoyance. "Then what's the point of all this? Without him, these pawns are meaningless."
"Meaningless pawns can still rip the Mind Stone out of Vision's head," I countered, pointing toward the lab. "So stop moping and start smashing!"
That seemed to light a fire under him again. "Fine," he growled, hefting Stormbreaker. "But the moment I sense Thanos—"
"Yeah, yeah, we'll all clear the way and let you have your moment," Rocket interrupted, rolling his eyes. "Big guy, angry, hammer—seen it before. Now, can we focus?"
Thor frowned at that remark. "Focus? I'm always focused, rabbit."
Rocket groaned. "It's Rocket! You massive piece of s***!"
I smirked as the enemy count decreased further. "He does bring the thunder—literally."
Rocket hopped onto Groot's shoulder for a better vantage point, firing off his cannon in rapid bursts. "Yeah, yeah, he's great. Now shut up and keep smashing, big guy!"
"I am Groot!"
"You tell 'em, buddy!" Rocket cheered, blowing up an enemy turret with a well-placed shot. "Nobody messes with the Guardians and walks away."
"Green Man! The lab is under attack. Help them secure the lab. I will hold the line here!" T'Challa shouted.
Without wasting a second, I threw myself into the fight, punching an incoming alien. "You need help?" I asked, not pausing for an answer.
"Not if you can clear these guys out," she said, her eyes darting back to the screens. "The extraction process is delicate. I cannot afford distractions."
I swatted more enemies away. With each punch, each slam, the number of enemies around the lab decreased, but I couldn't shake the feeling that we were running out of time. The sooner the extraction was finished, the better. "Ok, got it." I gave control to Hulk.
"Hulk, smash," I told him as I rested. I could already picture the smirk on his face.
"NO NEED TO TELL ME, NEW GUY!" Hulk shouted as tried to rip my shirt... but was disappointed as it wasn't tearing due to Strange's magic. "DAMN!" He shouted.
With Hulk fully in control, he took over with the kind of rage and might that only the green behemoth could bring. He swung his fists in every direction, clearing the path to the lab with brutal efficiency. Every alien that came near was either thrown into the air, crushed underfoot or sent flying through walls with a single strike.
"HULK SMASH!"
Shuri was focused as she monitored the extraction process. "I need more time, Hulk!" she shouted over the noise, not looking up from the screen. "Hold them off for just a little longer!"
Hulk grinned, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "HULK DO IT!" he shouted, charging straight into another group of aliens.
Meanwhile, outside, Thor was still clearing the battlefield with Stormbreaker, sending waves of lightning that cut through enemy lines. Rocket perched on Groot's shoulder, directing him as he stomped through the hordes of invaders.
"Yeah, yeah, just another Tuesday for us!" Rocket shouted, shooting down an enemy turret that had been trying to aim for our position. The rest of us were also fighting the waves.
"Hulk! You need to be careful!" Shuri yelled. "The Mind Stone is—"
Before she could finish, the door to the lab burst open with a deafening crash.
Hulk roared, his fists slamming into the ground as he took the brunt of the assault. His massive body moved with terrifying speed, smashing through the invaders like they were nothing.
"Stay down!" Hulk growled., not even winded by the battle. "Hulk... SMASH."
With one final strike, the lab was cleared.
"Done!" Shuri shouted, her voice filled with relief. "The Mind Stone is secure. Get ready to move out, Hulk!"
Hulk stood tall, catching his breath as the last of the enemies were sent flying across the lab.
"Good job, big guy," I said. "Now, let's move." I transformed back to my usual form.
T'Challa's voice came through the comms, sharp and urgent. "We're securing the perimeter. It's time to leave."
"Understood," I replied, looking toward Shuri. "Is Vision good to go?"
Shuri nodded, her hands working quickly on the monitors. "We've safely extracted the Mind Stone. Vision will be stable for now."
Thor's booming voice came over the comms next. "The battlefield is cleared. What's the plan now?"
As I looked around, the battlefield was nearly silent. The once overwhelming alien forces were now scattered and defeated.
"I am Groot," Groot added, still looking around, his limbs now at rest.
Now, let's get back to Thanos.
