The First Legendary Dragon Tamer

Chapter 59: Marriage Proposal

Draco was stunned, to say the least.

He knew of Lizbeth, and he held some respect as a mutual student and potential Dragon Hunter.

Though while not on the level of Jet Ashborne, she was still one of the most promising students in the class. She took third place in the Entrance Exams, and even in the Breath Control class, she showed exceptional talent.

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that she was an outstanding person.

Naturally, such a person would have caught Draco's eyes, and he wasn't ashamed to say it. She was a competent individual, and as someone who constantly sought strength and abhored weakness, Draco held her in high regard.

At least… until now.

"...Does she have a screw loose or something?" Draco thought aloud as he tried to process Lizbeth's absurd suggestion.

"What? Why would you say that?" Lizbeth quickly responded, genuinely surprised to hear Draco's response.

"Are you seriously asking me that after what you just said?"

"What's strange about what I said?" Lizbeth retorted. "You're the strongest male student in our class, and I'm the strongest female. Is it that unnatural that I would be interested in you?"

Draco hesitated to reply.

After all, Lizbeth wasn't exactly wrong. Based on her logic, no other man would be able to satisfy her—especially due to her personality.

Perhaps she would have settled for Jet Ashborne. After all, he was the Prime Student. However, after Draco disgraced him in the duel they had with their Rank 1 D-H, it was clear who the superior choic was.

Draco could see where she was coming from, but he simply found her audacity jarring.

"Think about how spectacular our union will be! We will be such an amazing couple! And our offsprings will be the most fortunate, since they will inherit the genes of the two strongest Dragon Hunters to come out of this batch of Academy students."

"...."

"So what do you say, Draco?" Lizbeth beamed. "Now that I've explained myself, do you finally see the appeal of being with me?"

Draco could not help but sigh.

He found no hole in her logic, especially considering the culture of Dragon Hunters in the Southern Territory. Many of them married fellow Dragon Hunters, or at least those in the business. This was to reduce the number of widows and widowers who would have to deal with their demise.

The life expectancy of an average Dragon Hunter was five years after they started their jobs.

As a result, most Dragon Hunters would die within ten years from the day they left the Academy and were officially recognized by the Southern Territory.

Which sane civilian would want to be married to such people?

Not only would their spouse be alive to witness their deaths, but due to the harsh customs that forbade remarriage, they would have to live without a spouse for the rest of their lives. Such a heartbreaking reality would be too much for most people.

As a result, many Dragon Hunters married among one another.

Strong Dragon Hunters chose stronger ones as their mates, especially if they were females.

This meant Lizbeth was actually being logical here.

Of all the students present, no one was a better candidate for Draco.

And the same applied to Draco.

In fact, one could say that he was being the unreasonable one in this discourse. His reaction to her propsal was strange in the eyes of many, but Draco couldn't care less. Many of the departing students shot him envious stares, but they remained quiet while waiting for his response.

Lizbeth was a beauty by all standards, and her chest was especially bountiful.

She had an audacious attitude and radiated confidence.

Her ambition knew no limits, and with her level of talent, she was certainly not going to be a liability on the battlefield. Female Dragon Hunters were rare enough as things were, but females with Lizbeth's level of talent and beauty were even rarer.

Draco was a lucky man.

No, it wasn't about luck. He was strong, so naturally he would attract a strong female.

All the spectators watched and waited for Draco's response to her proposal, but they were all disappointed by the words that proceeded from his lips.

"Sorry. But I like someone else…"

His words were curt and straight to the point, clearly displaying his disinterest in Lizbella's proposal.

"Oh?" Lizbeth was surprised by this. "Who is she? Is she someone I know?"

"How is that relevant?"

"I would simply prefer to know who it is you picked over me. If she's a much better candidate, I would respect your choice. But it would be a stain on my pride if she isn't, and I don't think I'd be able to accept such a result."

"You…" Draco was beginning to get exasperated.

Once again, he couldn't argue against her logic, since this was a popular custom among the people of the Southern Territory.

Marriage born out of love was very rare.

Instead, people forged such relationships on the grounds of convenience and benefits.

Strong people desired stronger people, while smart people wanted smarter people. Rich men would go for those in the same social status as them, and the poor had to marry among themselves.

One's choice often reflected their status, and when choosing a bride, one had to pick the most favorable option.

Lizbeth found it hard to believe that Draco found a woman better than she was, but she also understood that this was possible. If that was indeed the case, and Draco could offer her proof of this, she would have no choice but to back off.

However, until then, her persistence was very understandable.

In fact, if she backed away too easily, it would be a stain on her resolve as the one who proposed.

Draco understood all this, so he could't be too harsh on Lizbella.

Still…

"I'm under no obligation to tell you that." Draco sighed, shrugging the conversation aside as he made to leave.

However, would Lizbeth let him leave just like that?

No way!

"Wait!" She held his hand, her voice filled deep-seated emotion as well as determination.

"You can't treat me like this!" Her voice trembled slightly. Clearly, she wasn't taking Draco's rejection so well. "I understand not wanting to be with me, but at least give me a proper explanation before leaving."

Draco glanced at her and saw how her eyes glistened with moisture.

He couldn't just walk away now.

Lizbeth tightened her grip on Draco as she placed her other hand on her chest, refusing to back off either.

"I deserve at least that much respect from you!"
