The Evolution of My Zombie Girlfriend

Chapter 12: Chapter 12: Don't want you to get hurt.

Despite safety concerns, Murvin insisted on Yu Lan staying at home each day while he ventured out to hunt zombies. Over the span of nearly a month, he had all but eradicated the zombie population in District 3.

In his hand, a crystal core flickered briefly with a faint glow before dimming into obscurity. Discarding this lackluster prize, Murvin retrieved another core and resumed absorbing its energy. He had reached the pinnacle of Level 2, Grade 12, yet advancement to Grade 13 remained elusive.

Yu Lan, however, was growing at an astonishing pace. If Murvin did not strengthen himself, he feared he might fail to protect her in the perilous world they inhabited—a world teeming with formidable adversaries.

Lost in thought, Murvin's reverie was shattered by a fleeting black shadow darting across the ground. Snapping back to reality, he looked up to see a colossal zombie clinging to the wall of a high-rise building. Its massive tail swayed menacingly as it scanned for prey.

A Level 12 zombie? The aura of power radiating from it caused Murvin's eyes to gleam with anticipation. Clutching his dagger tightly, he prepared to strike. Among Level 2 zombies, these were the most formidable, their crystal cores harboring purer energy.

The zombie had clearly sensed Murvin's presence. Its bulbous eyes bulged ominously, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth in a threatening snarl. A deafening roar erupted from above, shattering nearby glass. Murvin covered his ears and swiftly moved to safer ground, a gentle smile playing on his lips.

Such a roar would be unbearable for ordinary people, let alone for someone with heightened senses like Murvin. Yet, despite his readiness, the zombie growled once and then shifted its gaze elsewhere. Gazing at the enormous head of the creature, Murvin felt a sudden premonition of dread.

Frowning, he prepared to unleash his powers, but the zombie vanished in an instant, dashing towards a different direction. Following its path, Murvin's face darkened with alarm. It was heading straight for where Yu Lan was.

"Damn it!" he cursed under his breath, sprinting towards their residence. His eyes narrowed as he attempted to crush the zombie with his abilities, but the agile creature leaped to the opposite building, avoiding the attack. With a swift flick of its tail, it continued its relentless advance.

Murvin's expression grew colder. Focusing his power, he targeted the building the zombie clung to. The air seemed to freeze as a wave of lethal energy surged forward, causing the entire structure to crumble from its base.

Dust and debris filled the air, but Murvin's gaze remained fixed on the chaos unfolding before him. The Level 12 zombie, now enraged, landed amidst the dust and lunged at Murvin with blinding speed. Its massive tail lashed out violently.

With lightning reflexes, Murvin leaped three meters into the air, swinging from a bloodstained lamppost and landing squarely on the zombie's back. Without hesitation, he plunged his dagger deep into its skull. The zombie let out a piercing shriek, shattering nearby windows. Ignoring the pain in his own ears, Murvin twisted the blade, causing the creature's brain to explode in a gory mess.

Extracting the prized crystal core from the dead zombie, Murvin panted slightly, blood trickling from his left ear. Despite the ringing in his ears, he wiped away the blood nonchalantly, relieved that the danger had passed.

He couldn't fathom why the zombie had targeted Yu Lan instead of him. Regardless, it was fortunate that she was unharmed.

As he walked home, wiping the blood from his ear, Murvin hoped Yu Lan wouldn't see him in such a disheveled state. Upon arriving, he found her lying on the sofa, gazing out the window. Relief washed over him—she was safe.

Approaching her as usual, Murvin intended to embrace her, but Yu Lan suddenly pulled him down onto the sofa, clutching his neck and staring intently at his injured ear.

"Ow!"

"Are you worried about my injury?" Murvin felt his heart skip a beat. Holding Yu Lan's head, he kissed her passionately, his dark eyes brimming with emotion.

This was only the second time such a radiant light had appeared in his eyes.

"Yulan... seeing you like this makes me want to devour you whole," he whispered, his voice heavy with desire. Breathing heavily, he held her tightly, kissing her neck with fervor, a twisted smile forming on his lips.

He truly wanted to consume her, just as he had once wished for her to consume him, piece by piece.

"I'll be more careful next time, don't be upset," Murvin's soft voice was feather-light, yet it somehow soothed Yulan's troubled heart. She hugged his head, mumbling something incoherent.

Holding Yulan and gazing out the window, Murvin noticed he could see the site of his battle with the zombie from here.

"Did you see what happened earlier?" he asked.

Yu Lan was lost in thought, ignoring him once more.

Knowing he wouldn't get a response, Murvin smiled gently. "I brought a crystal core today that I'm sure you'll love."

At the mention of the crystal core, Yulan's throat involuntarily made a "gulp" sound. Now, the mere mention of crystal cores elicited this reaction from her, almost like a conditioned reflex.

Amused by her adorable response, Murvin reached into his pocket and pulled out the newly acquired Level 2 crystal core. This was only the second time such a radiant light had appeared in his eyes.

"Ow!" Yulan didn't understand what Mo Wen was saying, but her face tightened into a serious frown as she called out again. She felt an uncomfortable tightness in her chest and a deep sense of unease.

"Yulan... do you know that seeing you like this makes me want to devour you whole," Mo Wen whispered, his voice tinged with a mixture of tenderness and longing. This stirred up the deepest desires within him. He breathed heavily, holding Yulan's body tightly, and kissed her neck passionately, a twisted smile forming on his lips—a smile he himself couldn't fully comprehend.

He truly wanted to consume her, just as he had once wished for her to consume him, piece by piece.

"I'll be more careful next time, don't be upset," Mo Wen's soft voice was as light as a feather, yet it somehow soothed Yulan's troubled heart. She hugged his head and mumbled something incoherent.

Holding Yulan in his arms, Mo Wen gazed out the window and noticed that from this vantage point, he could see the very spot where he had just battled the zombie.

"Did you see everything that just happened?" he asked gently.

Yulan was lost in thought again, ignoring him as usual.

Knowing he wouldn't get a response, Mo Wen smiled softly. "The crystal core I brought today is something you're sure to love."

At the mention of the crystal core, Yulan's throat involuntarily made a "gulp" sound. Now, the mere mention of crystal cores elicited this reaction from her, almost like a conditioned reflex.

Mo Wen watched Yulan's adorable expression with a contented smile and then pulled out the Level 2 crystal core he had just acquired from his pocket.
