Chapter 11: Chapter 11. Do you want to come along?
"My Lord Yu Lan..." The spiritualist's face darkened, and he was reminded of the vibrant figure who had always fought alongside them with unyielding vigor. Blinking back tears that blurred his vision, he shouted at Xu Jielin with a voice choked with emotion: "I understand, I truly do! But my Lord Yu Lan is an isolationist mutant; how could she possibly be in trouble here? My Lord, by now she must have already left this place and returned to District 2 to find us. You are wasting precious time here!"
"Wasting time?" Xu Jielin seemed to hear a bitter jest, bending over as if struck by an invisible force, his hand covering his eyes in self-deprecating laughter. "It's not about wasting time... I asked her to wait for me here."
He arrived too late, and so she was no longer there.
Given Yu Lan's steadfast nature, she would never have left before his return. Yet, it has been a month since then.
"Blue Blue," Xu Jielin knelt down in anguish, the relentless downpour bending his usually upright spine. Torrential rain obscured his face, washing away any semblance of hope, leaving only despair. "Where are you now?"
Just as the spiritualist struggled to convince Xu Jielin, Yu Feng, who had been seated in the car, stepped out into the storm. She was a modified human mutant, responsible for relaying messages from headquarters. "My Lord, the distribution of zombies in the Land of Death appears to have become abnormal. The northern fourth district has been attacked by Level 2 zombies multiple times. Headquarters requires your immediate return to the northern base."
"Let them find someone else!" Xu Jielin clenched his fists, his gaze cold and unforgiving as he looked at Yu Feng.
"My Lord, consider the consequences of disobeying orders," Yu Feng's voice was devoid of emotion, chilling even in the midst of the storm.
Xu Jielin fell silent, staring at himself, caked in mud, and closed his eyes in pain.
In the darkness, Yu Lan found herself drawn towards a distant, blinding light, like a moth to a flame. Despite her legless state, she crawled relentlessly, her progress slow but unwavering. As the light seemed to recede further, she let out a desperate cry, feeling abandoned and suffocated by an overwhelming sense of discomfort.
Weak and pained, she lay limp on the ground, her throat constricted as if something heavy pressed against it. Roaring like a trapped beast, she lifted her head to find the darkness around her gradually fading.
The scene shifted, revealing a field of corpses.
A man stood gracefully, holding a bloodstained dagger, gently wiping the blood off its blade.
Noticing her presence, he extended the dagger towards her, his bloodied face breaking into a smile. "Would you like to join me, Lanlan?"
"Awooo!"
Yu Lan awoke, unsure of what she felt, only tilting her head slightly and breathing heavily.
"Lanlan," Mo Wen immediately pulled her into his arms, nuzzling her neck tenderly, unable to bear being apart from her.
"Awooo." Yu Lan mumbled, still having no appetite for humans.
"Did you just call me?" Yu Lan's words filled Mo Wen with surprise, and he held her face with excitement. "Can you say it again?"
Confused by the close-up face before her, seeing the man suddenly excited, she politely called again, "Awooo."
Yu Lan's obedience made Mo Wen laugh even more joyfully, hugging her tighter, almost merging their bodies together.
"Lanlan, I like it when you call me Awen. Will you call me that from now on?"
Yu Lan, in her zombie mind, didn't fully grasp what Mo Wen meant. She reached out and touched his head, finding his hair smooth and fun to play with.
Mo Wen, lost in Yu Lan's calls, didn't mind her messing with his hair.
With her newly regrown legs, Yu Lan had become unusually restless. She disliked resting and often reached out to touch her new bones, sometimes staring at them for hours on end. At the same time, she became fascinated with throwing crystal nuclei, scattering Mo Wen's entire backpack of crystals across the house with abandon, as if she were tossing money.
Beyond throwing crystals, she developed an interest in Mo Wen, often biting his hair affectionately.
Mo Wen indulged her every whim.
In recent days, Yu Lan's daily intake of crystal nuclei had increased from twelve to thirty-five, with no signs of stopping.
Deep down, Mo Wen was genuinely happy. Yu Lan's increased energy intake signified her growing strength and rank, which brought him immense joy.
Now, Yu Lan had grown into a formidable fourth-level zombie, a powerful existence among first-level zombies.
