The Cursed Talent

Chapter 2: The Fractured Hourglass

**The Cursed Talent**

**Part 2: The Fractured Hourglass**

Days had passed since Aki's near-collapse at the disaster site. He hadn't fully recovered, his body still aching from the toll he'd taken, but the weight of his decision lingered. He knew what he had to do: find a way to break the curse. The problem was, he had no idea where to start.

Aki had spent his life mending the broken, but the idea of repairing himself, of undoing the curse that had become his reality, felt almost impossible. No one had ever told him there was a way to reverse it. The stories he had heard as a child about the healing powers of ancient artifacts, about people who could bend fate itself, seemed like fantasies now. But Aki wasn't someone who gave up easily. If anyone could find a way out of this, it was him.

He began his search by visiting the people who had once been his mentors, those who had taught him the art of mending. They had always told him that his power came from within, that it was part of who he was. But they had never warned him of the price. They had never told him that such a gift could come with a cost so high it could erase a person's very essence.

The first person he sought out was an old woman named Mei, a healer who had taught him the basics of his gift. Mei was a recluse now, living in a small, secluded house at the edge of the city. Aki had visited her many times in the past, but today felt different. He felt the weight of his question hanging in the air before he even knocked on her door.

Mei opened the door with a knowing smile, as if she had been expecting him. She didn't ask how he was or why he had come. Instead, she simply said, "You've discovered the price, haven't you?"

Aki nodded, feeling the bitterness rise in his throat. "I need to find a way to stop it. I can't keep going like this."

Mei motioned for him to come inside. Her home was small, filled with trinkets and books, many of which Aki recognized from his own childhood lessons. But there was something different in the air today—an uneasy stillness, as though the very walls were holding their breath.

"You've always known, Aki," she said, settling into a chair. "You've always known that your gift came with a price. And yet, you continued to give."

"I didn't have a choice," Aki replied. "The world depends on me."

Mei's eyes softened. "The world is always in need. But what about you? What do you need?"

Aki couldn't answer. The truth was, he didn't know anymore. His life had become a constant cycle of giving, of repairing what was broken in others, without ever considering what was happening to him. But now, it was clear. If he didn't stop, there would be nothing left of him to give.

"I've heard of ways to break curses," Mei said slowly. "But it's not easy. In fact, it's dangerous. There are ancient forces at work here, forces that exist beyond your control."

Aki's heart raced. "I'll do whatever it takes. I need to stop this."

Mei hesitated, then reached for a small, intricately carved box on the table beside her. "There is a place," she said, "a place where time itself bends. It's said to hold the answers you seek. But you must be careful, Aki. This place—The Fractured Hourglass—doesn't give answers easily. It takes more than just strength to survive there. It takes the ability to face your deepest fears."

Aki's breath caught in his throat. "Where is it?"

Mei closed her eyes, as though the memory pained her. "It's hidden. Deep in the mountains, where no one dares to go. You'll need to find it on your own. But be warned, the journey will cost you more than just your body. You may lose yourself entirely if you aren't careful."

Aki stood up, determination in his eyes. "I don't care what it costs. I'll do whatever it takes."

Mei nodded, her expression somber. "Then go, Aki. But remember—some curses aren't meant to be broken. Some things are better left untouched."

With those words, Aki left Mei's home, the weight of his decision settling on him like a cloak. The Fractured Hourglass. A place where time itself twisted and turned. It was his only hope, but it was also the most dangerous path he could take.

As Aki made his way out of the city and towards the mountains, he couldn't help but wonder: Was he truly ready to face whatever lay ahead? Or would this journey, this search for answers, become the thing that finally consumed him?

The road ahead was uncertain, filled with shadows and dangers unknown. But Aki knew one thing for certain: He had no choice but to move forward. The curse that held him captive could not be ignored any longer. And the only way to find peace was to face it head-on, no matter the cost.
