Chapter 54: The deadly encounter
One moment, Zayn was still wondering who those people were, and the next, he was on the floor.
It happened so fast that he could not keep up.
Everything blurred around him. His ears started ringing as the entire world around him began to spin.
Suddenly, everything went dark, but then a sharp pain at the back of his head snapped him back to reality.
Zayn clenched his teeth, trying hard not to scream as he reached for the back of his head.
His fingers touched something wet. The warm, sticky feeling on the tips of his fingers reminded him of the horror he had experienced earlier.
It was then that he noticed a small pool of red liquid flowing next to his face.
His eyes fixed on the red reflection of all four students were now standing just beside him.
It was like he was back there in the illusion—only this time, the two-legged beasts had replaced the dog-like beasts.
He started hearing a loud tapping noise in his head. It was like someone was beating a drum right next to him.
The chilly night breeze helped him gain clarity as he realized it was not a drum but his heartbeat.
This time, he was not in any illusion; this was the real world.
The realization came with fear. The fear that this might be his end.
A single question lingered in his mind: Why? He looked at the blond-haired man and opened his mouth to ask the same, but the very next moment, he saw a leg coming right at his face.
The world around him slowed down as every inch of his body screamed for him to dodge.
In desperation, he tried to roll back when he heard a scream inside him.
[Not the back! Move your hands, damn it. Place them at the front.]
He flinched at Xane's shout and automatically tried to follow Xane's voice, but it was too late.
Pain shot through his pinky fingers, then his nose. The strong smell of leather hit his nostrils as the force behind the kick sent him rolling across the track.
He wanted to curse, spit, do something, but the only thing that came out was a mouthful of blood.
Two rows of thick red liquid started seeping down his nose, running over his chin, then falling to the ground, adding to the blood puddle forming below him.
He didn't know if it was the fear of death, but he turned to look back at the blond guy.
He'd just stood his ground against Xenor, and now he couldn't even stay standing against this fcker.
That was pathetic. The thought burned worse than the pain.
He opened his mouth again, only to end up puking more blood onto the track.
Xane screamed in his head. [Shit, just close your mouth, Zayn. We can't lose any more blood.]
Zayn stared at the puddle of blood with wide eyes. This instantly extinguished the flames of frustration as the cold reality hit him. He was dying.
But why? Didn't the academy forbid killing? What had he done to deserve this? He looked up at the blond guy walking closer to him.
The way the man looked at him, it was as if he were staring at a worm.
So that was it. A pathetic worm like him didn't even have the right to ask questions. Was this the end?
Just then, he heard Xane's cold voice inside his head. [Do you recognize him?]
This pulled him out as he realized that he was not alone this time.
He could not give up like that.
Zayn focused on the blond guy's face. He had thick eyebrows, ear-length hair, and brown eyes. This guy was in a grey robe, so he was from their batch.
He tried to think, but nothing came to his mind.
Xane shouted back. [Forget it. Focus on the front.]
Just then, he saw that the blond guy was moving toward him. Zayn tried to drag himself back.
[No, don't show him your back. We're in no condition to run.]
Zayn asked in panic, <Then, what should I do?>
Xane looked around, trying to see any way to get out of the situation, but he didn't see anybody around. [Calm down and relax. Just keep your hands forward. Don't try to agitate him. You have to protect the important organs until somebody sees us.]
Xane cursed himself for suggesting Zayn cut his tongue earlier.
If not for that, Zayn could scream.
Zayn remembered who Xane was, and it gave him a bit of confidence.
But at this moment, the blond guy suddenly appeared right in front of his eyes.
His movements were so fast that Zayn couldn't even catch them.
The blond guy grabbed him by the hair and smirked at him. "Viyron, you leech, how the hell did you manage to survive the trial?"
Zayn said in his head, <Oh, so this guy knows the original body owner.>
[Oh, come on. Stop thinking about him! Focus.]
Zayn felt a pull on his hair. He looked up and saw the blond guy smirking at him. "Well, it doesn't matter. I just don't understand how Father could choose a pathetic leech like you for her. You fcking insect, why don't you die and leave my sister alone?"
Xane shouted in his head. [Just clench your teeth and fall. Use your hands for a safe landing.]
Zayn looked ahead in confusion, but just then, he saw a hand coming toward his face.
Once again, he trusted Xane.
Pat!
The loud slap echoed in his ears, but he just dropped to the ground.
Once again, Xane fired rapid commands. [On your side. Bend your knees. Hands at the back of your head. Face on your knees.]
Zayn followed without question. He wished Xane were in control of the body. But now, every wish could be true.
[Protect your head.]
The very next moment, he felt a kick on his back.
Then on his hand, and another one on his leg.
One of them even landed on his palm.
That was just the start, as all of them came together and started kicking him.
He wanted to scream, but knew that would only make him lose more blood.
Xane said in his head. [Just endure it, Zayn. Endure it.]
After getting kicked for almost 10 minutes, he heard a shout from the back.
"Auren! That's enough."
At that call, everyone stopped.
Zayn felt someone pulling him up by his hair again.
He willingly cooperated, as anything was better than more kicks.
…
Auren stared at Viyron's blank face while clenching his hands.
No matter how much he hit this leech, it just made him angrier.
Just seeing this pathetic face made Auren's blood boil.
He raised his hand in anger as bright red fire formed around it.
The guys behind him shouted.
"No, Auren!"
"Wait, he might die!"
Xane screamed. [Oh no!]
Zayn was so relieved that he didn't even notice when the fire-covered hand pressed into his chest.
It was so hot that the fire-covered fingers passed through his ribs like a hot knife through wax.
Before long, all he saw was Auren's face inching closer to his.
He looked down with his mouth wide open, and all he saw was Auren's elbow on his chest.
It was only then that he registered a hand had just penetrated his chest.
He could not even process it as the light faded from his eyes and darkness engulfed him again.
Xane was no different, as the darkness pulled him back into its embrace, cutting off his connection to the outside world.
Auren stared in shock as the leech before him went limp.
