Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Amiria
Jonady seated in a carriage beside Raelia observed the bustling streets of the capital.
The glistening cobblestones colorful facades and joyful commotion of the crowd reminded him of Venice a city from his world of origin.
The cries of merchants hawking their wares the clatter of horses' hooves, and the laughter of children playing in the alleys formed a vibrant symphony.
The air was filled with the warm scents of spices fresh fruits, and pastries, adding a cozy touch to the atmosphere.
This impromptu outing was Jonady's first real opportunity to see his people since becoming the new monarch.
He sought not only a reprieve from the overwhelming responsibilities of his new role but also to understand the concerns and daily lives of the citizens. Beside him Raelia seemed radiant.
Her enthusiasm was infectious as she shared anecdotes and childhood memories, pointing out the shops and neighborhoods that had left an impression on her.
They stopped near a stall where an old man simply dressed but wearing a warm smile, sold grilled corn cakes.
Raelia insisted on buying two, handing one to Jonady with a conspiratorial grin.
— "This is what I used to sneak off to eat whenever I came here," she confided before taking a bite of her cake.
Jonady, usually reserved, allowed himself to be swept up in the lighthearted moment.
He took a bite of the cake appreciating its simplicity. He realized then that these moments of calm and connection with Raelia, as well as with the people were vital for him—not just as a monarch but as a man.
A little farther along, their steps brought them to a gondola owned by a vendor with a radiant smile. Raelia insisted they board.
Once seated Raelia paid the vendor and the small boat began to glide gently over the calm waters of a sunlit canal.
The vendor a woman with graying hair and a melodious voice began to sing a soft tune. Under the brilliant sun, the light danced on the water's surface.
Raelia blushing shyly rested her head on Jonady's shoulder, savoring this quiet moment. A joyful thought crossed her mind: Together we look like a couple on their honeymoon.
Jonady lost in thought, observed the peaceful banks sliding by. Despite the serenity of the moment his active mind couldn't help but dwell on the kingdom's future.
An idea began to form: A carriage road should be built through the forest to improve access to Amiria, and eventually, railway lines connecting every coast of this island kingdom. It would be ambitious, but not impossible.
The gondola continued its journey, trailed discreetly by palace guards. Dressed inconspicuously, they blended into the background to preserve the privacy of their king and the princess. The moment felt perfect—a fleeting reprieve from their charged lifes.
— "What is your destination?" the vendor asked, interrupting her song.
Raelia lifted her head from Jonady's shoulder, her lips curved in a gentle smile.
— "Pink Flower Field" she replied, a hint of excitement in her voice.
The vendor nodded knowingly.
— "Very well. That field is beautiful this time of year. You won't be disappointed."
The gondola set course for the Pink Flower Field, allowing Jonady and Raelia a few more moments of peace and simplicity.
As the sun dipped closer to the horizon their bond grew stronger framed by the tranquil beauty of the setting.
