Chapter 96: Target Acquired
Quagmire moved from street to street, directly avoiding gazes that could interfere with his plans, and from time to time, as he was moving closer and closer to the middle, he saw more and more ghouls that were surrounded by a dense mist. Nothing that could not be solved by a large enough explosion. Superior firepower would always reign supreme, as his very well own motto.
Though thinking about it, as he delved deeper into the technological list, he would need to update the doctrine soon. While the core superior firepower remains supreme, he must also add surgical warfare and maneuver warfare, as well as mass drone conflicts.
That way, it would truly become the best and most advanced superior firepower doctrine. Right now, his doctrine is comprised mostly of slapping thousands of artillery in the front and going for attritional warfare and human wave tactics as the artillery bogs down the enemy defenses.
Now, looking at various perspectives and ideas, he has come to the conclusion that his treasured superior firepower doctrine is barbaric in the face of these wonder weapons. He truly has been enlightened by technology, and sticking to the old would do him no good. As it would serve as a chain to him, unable to reach further heights in the art of war.
With that in mind, one side of his lips curled upward into a smirk, over the thoughts that despite reaching the top of the military ranks, there are still things for him to learn. Truly, you never stop learning no matter what stage one is in his or her life.
Realizing such a profound enlightenment, he let out a small but humorous chuckle that went on deaf ears. Thus, with a pleasant smile across his face, he reached out his hand and brought out another explosive device and placed it down, near an alleyway, hidden behind a few crates of boxes, which are directly place in the foundation of the side of the towering building.
Once it was done, he lifted his upper body with his core muscles, when suddenly his senses tingled. It was so overwhelming that he was forced to immediately react. With a twist of the ankle and force from his lower body, he leaped from the side, and when he landed, it was still tingling, and so he rolled over to the side.
As he was rolling through the ground, he was able to peek through for a moment of where once was, and there it was, the ghoul he ran away from. From the looks of it, it definitely was the same ghoul that was chasing him.
Its deep bloody eyes pierce through his body, making his body hair rise, along with a few electric shocks making heads and toes throughout his body. With his dextrous hands, he quickly grabbed the pistol from his spatial inventory and fired multiple shots.
The shots went through the mist seemingly hitting nothing; it was as if the mist consumed the bullets. But it was only his imagination, as he heard the bullets struck a target beyond the mist, though it was not inside the mist that he hit, meaning his target is still there and well.
The ghoul roared in anger. Quagmire, flushed with adrenaline, scrambled through his mind and found that he could use a grenade; however, that would need to wait. As of right now, numerous ghouls are making their way over to his location, if does it, it would endanger him of being surrounded, so he decided he would do it while retreating, so that the ghouls would not be able to surround him.
The mist ghoul was about to attack again, though, Quagmire was much faster to react as he let out multiple shots, emptying an entire magazine. With a twist of the ankle and knee, he turned and dashed away, all the while taking out the magazine and reinserting a new one in its place.
Numerous thoughts flooded his mind, on how to tackle the situation, but in the end he decided to secure his front first, before throwing the grenade, with a glance from his back, he saw that the mist ghoul is extremely agitated, and its deep scarlet eyes struck a chord deep in his heart.
There was something primordial in seeing two scarlet eyes in a mist surrounded by darkness, it was as if he was reliving his childhood fears, alas, he was already an adult. What is there to fear anyway? Each and everything, and that includes problems of all kinds, would always have solutions, even if its something a person does not agree with.
Quagmire, ran through the streets with steady pace, careful not to exhaust too much of his strength and stamina, as he turns from street to street, he saw that the ghouls were coming in, and once a few ghouls arrived in front of him, he raised the pistol and aimed.
With swift adjustments and a steady grip, along with the flush of adrenaline, he was able to aim properly as time seemed to slow down from his perspective. Mind working hard more than ever for the sake of survival.
Once a ghoul was in his sights, he pulled the trigger. A momentary flash of light erupted at the barrel of the silencer, and from it came out at blistering speed. The bullet struck the head of the first ghoul, and with a sway of his hand the target was changed, and another bullet was fired.
Two ghouls were killed in an instant; however, the final ghoul was too close for comfort, and with time ever slowly for him, he saw the signs, and saw that the final ghoul was about to lunge at him.
Thus, without any hesitation, he dropped down and slid with his front facing upwards. The ghoul was not able to grab Quagmire, except for the tip of its hat, but unfortunately the ghoul crashed on the other side, which further delayed the mist ghoul.
The mist ghoul roared in frustration, to the smile of Quagmire. After he slid down, he used the force of his right foot to slam it down, and from it using the momentum to rise up and continue running forward.
