Chapter 81: Patrol
Upon completing the tasks at hand, he thought of what he needed to do next, and upon looking at his watch, a decision was made. He is going to go on patrol now. Habagat just ate an extra portion already, which means he could stay and guard the base, and moreover, he is a cub, and they do not eat that much, especially what he ate earlier is enough to last him an entire day.
As Habagat still has wounds left on his body, he would leave him behind, as he is also the guard. That was just one of the reasons why, but just in case, he should go check up on him, and bid goodbye for he meantime. Though it is definitely not because he wants to pet his wolf friend, definitely not.
With that in mind, he stretched out his right hand and placed it on the ground, and with a twist of his body and a twist of his knees, followed by placing his hands on the knees as support, he was able to stand up. With a few sways of his hands, he swipes off the dirt that has accumulated on his uniform and buttocks.
Now that he was up, with a sway of a hand, his feet started moving in the direction of his home, and after a few moments of walking, he had arrived at the front of the door. As he was about to push the door open, it was then pushed by Habagat, who may or may not have sensed him coming back.
"Woof!" Habagat, with a telepathic smile, says.
Upon seeing his friend wolf, that he has befriended, a pet he does not want to call or even if he had he does not want to use it, it seemed derogatory for something or someone smart as Habagat, moreover he looked like a mythical creature, though that was just his own opinion and was completely unrelated of the base reason.
With a twirl of his lips as it turned into a pleasant smile, Quagmire spoke.
"What's up buddy?"
"Woof!" Habagat once again, with a smiley face, replies.
With a small and soft chuckle, he placed his hand at the top of Habagat and began massaging it. Habagat, thinking they were playing, lay down and asked for belly rubs. Quagmire let out a big and loud chuckle but complied, and so he rubbed his belly for a few moments, and after a while, he stopped and stood back up after playing with Habagat.
He then stretched it out again and placed it on Habagat's head and spoke.
"Alright, buddy, I will give you the biggest part later. However, I need you to guard our place as I am going on a patrol right now. Do you understand, buddy?" He says with a pleasant smile.
"Woof!" Habagat replies as he understands what his master wants to say.
After playing for a bit more with Habagat, Quagmire then readied up and with a twist of his foot, he descended down the stairs and moved into the forest as he would now start patrolling the areas around the base, and maybe this time extend the perimeter, which he would travel and consider current territory.
After yesterday's ambush and his expanding operations, a distance of a few hundred meters of perimeter is no longer feasible and must be extended into a few kilometers, so that means he would travel a few kilometers from the center of the base around, so that any immediate threats are dealt with. He cannot have been ambushed repeatedly, especially in such an intelligent manner.
A buffer zone is a must, so that there would be time and a decrease in the chances of being attacked so soon. Though he did not expect that the ghouls would have such organization, the first few ghouls he had encountered may have been a fluke, made to lower his guard.
Whoever has done it, he does not care, though he is curious, even if nobody did it and it is just in his imagination. That would also be great if it was, no. hopefully it was. He still does not know a lot of things about this world. For all he knows, there could be multiple gods, and not just the goddess who has given him the chance, which is certainly plausible.
Which gives him another reason to be cautious, though it is something that would further require much thought and deliberation, hasty judgments are wrong, and could kill. Hasty and decisive are two different things after all.
What he needs is to be decisive, and being decisive, he needs to have an optimal amount of information and knowledge of things, and not just go in blindly, and so he would need to gather information, which would also mean another reason to acquire drones. Precisely for long-distance information gathering, after all, they would not be obstructed by the forest, slopes, geography, and whatnot.
Just like a bird who has taken flight, they are free.
With that in mind, he began to raise his speed, and after a few moments of walking, he had entered the forest. The light from the sun illuminated the surroundings, which gave him ample lighting and a vision of things around him.
Not only that, from time to time he would glance around him and towards his back, he was cautious, he breathed softly, and walked silently all the while avoiding patches of grass and other obstacles that could make sounds if stepped on. He does not want to stick out like a sore thumb, so he moved silently and cautiously, but at the same time decisively.
A few minutes passed by, and from his peripheral vision, he saw a slight movement. With quick action, he hid behind some bushes and observed. Once he saw what it was, a side of his lip turned up into a smirk. He had found a group of ghouls, and it seemed like they had not noticed him, which means his effort paid off.
