Chapter 11: More Training(11)
Soken Ishida listened carefully to Sora's measured words, his serene expression unchanging even as the boy spoke candidly about Quincy's history and his thoughts on the Shinigami. The old man nodded thoughtfully, stroking his chin as Sora finished his point.
"You have a clear understanding of the past, Sora," Soken said, his voice gentle but firm. "And you've formed your own opinions, which is admirable. Balance, after all, is essential to the world, and it is something both Quincy and Shinigami have struggled to maintain."
Sora looked at the old man who seemed to know an awful lot about balance, well, Sora was willing to learn as long as someone was there, willing to teach him.
The Elder straightened in his seat, his calm yet commanding presence filling the training area.
"Now, you came here to learn, didn't you? Let me teach you the essence of what it means to be a Quincy and how to properly wield your power."
Sora perked up immediately, his golden eyes wide with excitement, joy even.
Finally, he would get to learn some stuff about being a Quincy.
He watched an old man reach into the fold of his robes and pull out what seemed to be a small silver cross.
It was intricately designed, its edges were sharp and its center was glowing faintly with a soft blue light.
He held it up for the boy to see.
"This," Soken began, "is a Sanrei Cross, the foundation of Quincy weaponry. Every Quincy is trained to focus their Reishi through an object like this. It channels and stabilizes our power, allowing us to manifest weapons. For most, it becomes a bow—the hallmark of a Quincy."
Sora's eyes were filled with amazement, there was just so much to learn, he was just so giddy, so excited to learn more about Quincy, even if granted he learned about that stuff a few weeks ago.
The man gently closed their arm around the cross, his Reiatsu flowed through the cross in a smooth controlled stream.
With a faint hum, Sora watched in amazement as a bow materialized in his hand.
The bow form was elegant and glowing a pale blue light that seemed to pulse with energy.
The man then drew the bow back, creating a reishi arrow for him to use.
He pulled on the string of the arrow and locked it into his target.
The man then let go of the arrow.
Sora watched in amazement as the arrow hit the rock...100 meters away, with such precision that it left a hole in the middle of it, the rock did not seem to have realized that it had been hit at all.
Such precision.
If only he could do that.
Upon noticing the boy gawking at his display, the man opened his mouth and said.
"This is the standard form of Quincy's weapon," Soken said, gesturing to the bow. "It is called a Heilig Bogen, or Holy Bow. It allows us to gather and fire arrows of condensed Reishi." He let the bow dissolve and continued.
"But that is not all. Some Quincy choose different paths. The Seele Schneider is another weapon—a blade that doubles as an arrow. Then there are the Ginto, silver tubes used for spells akin to the Shinigami's Kido. Each weapon has its purpose, and a Quincy must understand which tool to use and when."
Even if the man's words may have come out just a bit robotic, as if he had said those words a thousand times, Sora understood that the man was just trying to make him understand the basics.
"Hum...do I need them to make Reishi weapons?" Sora suddenly asked looking at the old man.
"It is not a requirement per se, it does make it easier," The old man said looking at Sora.
"If I may ask, why did you pose such a question" Soken added looking at the boy.
Upon seeing the boy smile the old man looked at Sora.
"Sora...can you..."
"Yup," Sora said puffing out his chest, even going out of his way to make a Quincy bow.
Yup, praise him, as he was a genius...However, his proud self vanished when he realized he wasn't getting the glazing needed to achieve such a feat.
Soken gazed at the boy, it seemed like this boy had a lot more potential than he thought.
"Your control over Reishi as good as it is, is quite unstable, it is akin to trying to recreate a skill level you do not possess yet" Soken added after examining the bow for a bit.
It was as if the boy was doing it out of muscle memory instead of the skill needed to achieve such a feat.
"Really..." Sora said, looking down a bit as he heard the criticism.
"Try being less wasteful with your Reishi," Soken said in a rather calm voice.
Sora nodded his head and began practicing.
Soken walked close to Uryu, who seemed to be getting the hang of it, using his Quincy bow.
The old man looked quite proud of his grandson.
However, Uryu's form was lacking for a better sense of the word and thus, Soken had to show Uryu the proper form of how to show a bow.
