Survive as a Prison Guard in the Game

Chapter 143 - Rodwell's Secret (3)

Chapter 143
Rodwell’s Secret (3)

In the Bern Chronicle Game, there are many ways to refer to Rodwell, but the title given to him by the players is Dark Emperor.

An emperor who uses demonic energy.

While a third party might think that he was on the same side as the Demon God Church, Rodwell fought fiercely against the Demon God Church in spite of his use of demonic energy.

Though the reason for this is unknown.

Considering the information gained from the laboratory that was one of the branches of the Demon God Church, Redin can see why Rodwell hates them.

The only successful test subject.

Perhaps Rodwell was subjected to unspeakable horrors after he left the lab and went to the main headquarters.

To some extent, he can understand Rodwell’s anger.

If that were all there was to it, he could have been persuaded or cajoled into becoming an ally, but Rodwell’s anger was directed beyond the Demon Church and right at the Goddess of Creation.

The one who cursed the world.

To get back at the Goddess of Creation, Rodwell sought to destroy the world she had created.

The whole premise of using pieces of the demon god’s flesh to gain its power, and in the game, Rodwell collected a total of five pieces of said flesh.

“Was the Finger in the Empire?”

A piece of Demon God’s flesh hidden by the last emperor. Redin didn’t know where it was hidden, but he knew it was in the Oberg Empire.

“Kkieeeeg!”

A winged demon flew toward him. A bird that someone must have raised in the capital. Disposing of the now-demonic creature, and using the Shadow Dragon, he moved west of the capital.

North, South, and East.

All around Redin, the capital was in turmoil, with fiends and demons rampaging, yet the western part of the capital was strangely quiet.

*Swoooosh!*

Redin dismissed the Shadow Lord Mode and he flew to the mansion of Fabian visible on the ground. Upon landing, vampires waiting nearby approached him.

“Welcome.”

“Where’s Fabian?”

“He’s inside the mansion.”

Walking inside the mansion, Redin entered the main office, where Fabian and Vivian stood staring in the direction of the capital, their faces grim.

“Vice-Captain?”

“What’s the situation?”

“Thanks to the holy relics we secured as previously instructed by you, we were able to secure the area around the mansion.”

“And the capital?”

“I’ve tried to use the bats to create a map with ultrasound, but each one sent was lost within the miasma of demonic energy, so I haven’t been able to check,” Fabian explained with a frown.

This happened because Fabian’s abilities were lower when compared to Rodwell’s.

“What about the other Dukes?”

“Pierre and Hekan are out of contact, with the last reports of them moving toward the capital, and the head of the Untouchables has fled the capital.”

Redin relaxed his body, rocking his head from side to side.

The Leader of Pierre.

The Head of Hekan.

And the Leader of the Darkness Seven.

Since Pierre and Hekan headed to the capital, they must have been influenced by Rodwell’s demonic energy.

Considering his natural abilities and demon god’s powers, Rodwell should be at least Sinister-level power. If done well, he could possess even greater strength.

“That’s at least three tough enemies.”

“I’ll help you with them.”

“All right. Let’s get moving.”

The time was running out.

Given that Rodwell consuming a piece of the demon’s flesh is already a daunting situation, if he were to hatch the egg he possesses on top of that…

Alone, Redin might not be able to stop him.

“One of the things I asked for should be here, right?”

“It’s over there.”

Fabian pointed to a long box. It was big enough for a sword. The sword he’d asked Marek to find for this day.

Redin looked at the seal on top of the box, then lifted it up and slung it over his shoulder.

“Let’s go.”

It was too dangerous to take Vivian with them, so he left the mansion with only Fabian. He took off and flew towards the center of the capital.

*Thump*

Kicking the ground, he sprinted as fast as he could.

The faster he moved, the stronger the concentration of demonic energy that pierced his skin. It didn’t affect him much because he had Demonic Energy Resistance.

Not so much for Fabian.

“Whoa…”

Fabian used blood magic to resist the demonic energy. A crown made of blood formed on his head and his face looked relaxed.

Without another word, they continued running until they reached the castle walls. Standing on top of the wall, Redin looked closely at the capital inside its walls.

Everything was on flames.

Demons and fiends were on the loose.

One of them climbed up the wall.

“Kkieeeg!”

Starting with it, the demons and fiends swarmed the walls like a zombie horde.

Fabian stretched out his hand, drawing blood.

Using his blood magic, he wiped out the oncoming fiends and demons with a single blow.

The waves of demons and fiends kept rushing in.

It didn’t take much effort to kill them. If Redin wanted to end this, he had to kill Rodwell.

He boosted his senses and scanned his surroundings.

As he searched for the strongest source of energy, he sensed the presence of what he assumed to be Pierre and Hekan, near the Imperial Palace.

Those with demonic energy on par with the Sinister.

“Let’s go straight to the Palace.”

Using his Fairy Wings, he flew through the sky to the palace. Fabian followed behind Redin, using blood magic to turn his body into a swarm of bats.

The two finally arrived at the palace.

From the entrance, they were greeted by a strange array of demons. From the knights who guard the palace to the criminals who belonged to Pierre and Hekan.

*Shiiing!*

He unsheathed the famous sword Cairo.

As he poured his purification energy into Cairo, black sparks flew and it began to resist.

But only for a moment.

The power of purification consumed the demonic energy and returned Cairo to its original state.

“I’ll clear a path, you conserve your power. We’ll need it for Pierre and Hekan.”

“Understood.”

Fabian took a step back.

“Huu..”

Redin controlled his breathing, keeping his eyes on the enemies ahead. Demons and fiends walking through the flames around them.

Using the power of the shadows, he created an alter ego.

Five shadows rose up around him. Forming a sword from the shadows, the alter egos took a stance and pointed it at the enemies.

It didn’t end there.

With the use of Lord Mode, the shadow armor that formed on Redin’s body was reproduced on his alter egos.

“Go.”

At the command, the shadow minions charged forward. Five gusts of wind decapitated the adversaries.

At the same time, Black Bear’s Paw smashed forth in all directions, followed by dozens of gusts of wind that swept through the entire area.

The shadow alter egos were relentless.

After slaying one enemy, it moved on to the next, followed by another, and so on.

In a frenzied rush, they cleared the palace of every demon and fiends they could find. As they did so, they also consumed the demonic energy of those they had slain.

[Shadow Lord (Beginner) is upgraded to Shadow Lord (Intermediate)].

[The number of shadow alter egos you can control increases to 10].

The corners of Redin’s mouth twitched up at the unexpected reward, and he gazed out over the large garden, where the demons and fiends laid out.

Two unusual auras.

The heads of Pierre and Hekan were walking out, smiling broadly.

Two individuals with their minds completely intact.

“We have an unwelcome visitor?”

“Kiihihihi. I’ll kill them all.”

At the sight of them, Redin called back all of his Shadow Minions.

“Fabian, wrap this up quickly.”

“Yes, sir.”

The Kingdom of Ravino.

In the northern part of the kingdom, there is a huge lake with a villa built for royalty to spend their vacations.

A hundred servants and maids are assigned to the villa.

The only thing that kept them busier was King Ravino, who delegated most of his authority to the crown prince and came to the villa to rest his mind and body.

It has been a week since King Ravino came to the villa.

“Hmph.”

Inhaling deeply the smell of the forest, King Ravino shifted his weight and walked along the path that had been built around the lake.

Walking through these parts of the forest always calmed him down.

A time when he didn’t have to be guarded, or stress over the affairs of state.

Though someone might still come after his life.

Retired knights from the Royal Knights spent their retirement years around the villa and were responsible for its security.

The best of the best.

Because they had been with him for so long, he felt more at ease.

After his walk, King Ravino made his way to the villa’s terrace and sat down in a chair.

“Your Majesty.”

A maid approached, carrying a tray.

“It’s time for your medicine.”

The maid set the tray on the table in front of King Ravino and lifted the bowl in front of him.

A medicine made from a decoction of all sorts of healthful herbs.

After taking a sip first, to make sure everything was okay, she handed the bowl to King Ravino.

*Gulp.*

King Ravino downed the medicine in one gulp. The maid took the bowl back and walked away with her head bowed.

“Hmph…….”

He closed his eyes quietly, savoring the taste of the medicine in his mouth. He leaned back in his chair and kept his eyes shut.

.

.

.

“Maje…….”

At the sound of someone calling out, King Ravino tried to open his eyes, but his eyelids were far too heavy.

‘Ugh.’

His head felt so woozy.

There was no strength in his body.

“Ar…… ghh!”

“Maj……!”

“R…… un…….”

He was already woozy, and he was beginning to hear audible voices. Thinking that he was having a nightmare, King Ravino tried to relax his body and think of his beloved wife to have a different dream.

However, it didn’t.

Instead of the dream changing, his senses began to clarify. What sounded like a hallucination became clear.

“Your Majesty, you must flee!”

Someone’s insistent voice.

King Ravino’s eyes opened with it.

All the sensations that had seemed to have been imprisoning him returned.

“Huh!”

He gasped and looked around.

“Aaahhhh!”

“Please, mercy…….”

“Your Majesty! Your Majesty!”

“Gahhhhhh!”

A scene of one-sided slaughter was unfolding.

Men in black cloaks with drawn swords slaughtered the servants and maids. And knights charged to stop them.

Although they were retired.

They weren’t out because they were rusty; they were still capable of going back into active duty.

And yet.

Those knights were being slaughtered by men in black cloaks.

They were being decapitated before they could even swing their swords once.

*Thud!*

Bodies piled up on the floor.

“Keuff…….”

King Ravino clutched his heart and gritted his teeth. Familiar faces of servants, maids, and knights fell to their deaths.

“No…… Noooo.”

“The capital is next.”

A chilling voice came from behind him.

King Ravino turned his head quickly to see a man in a black cloak.

A white mask visible beneath the cloak.

A black inverted cross was painted on his left cheek. A symbol of Demon Church he’d grown tired of seeing in recent kingdom meetings.

King Ravino frowned.

“Demon Church?”

The masked man didn’t answer King Ravino’s question, but instead issued a question of his own.

“Do you see? Your beloved knights are dying without even putting up a fight? Next, we plan to kill everyone in the capital.”

“……”

“Do you want to keep them alive?”

King Ravino bit his lip.

The masked man laughed softly at the unresponsive king.

“You want them dead, I see. Your son shall be the first to go, skinned and hung on the city wall.”

“Keeuk, please stop!”

“Then let me ask you one last question. Do you want to save them all?”

“I want them alive.”

The masked man’s eyes glinted.

“Take us to the secret place where the flesh of the demon god is stored.”
