Chapter 142 - Rodwell's Secret (2)
Chapter 142
Rodwell’s Secret (2)
Night has fallen on the Oberg Empire.
*Rattle*
A fierce wind whipped up, rattling the windows violently. The Head Maid turned to stare at the moon outside the window.
All the windows in the palace were open. Quietly, she rose from her seat, grabbed a lantern, and left the room.
*Thud*
*Thud*
The sound of footsteps echoed through the rattling of the windows.
Walking down the deserted hallway, the Head Maid stood in front of the massive door to the Throne Room. She peeked inside through the small slit.
A red carpet stretched down the hall.
At the end of it, someone sat on a throne. She couldn’t make out who it was, but the person was hunched over with both hands covering their face.
There was only one person who would be like that at this hour.
The Emperor of the Empire, a drunken, inebriated man.
“Your Majesty?”
Despite the head maid’s call, the man on the throne didn’t stir.
*Whirring!*
The wind blew in through the open window in the throne room, and a cold gust of breeze blew through the crack of the door. The Head Maid shivered and opened the door.
*Creak!*
She took the lantern and walked slowly to the throne room.
She shone the lantern at the man sitting on the throne. The Head Maid covered her mouth with one hand as she realized the man’s identity.
Chancellor Rodwell.
She knew the Emperor wasn’t treated like an Emperor, but she hadn’t expected him to sit so freely on the throne.
Taking slow, deep breaths to steady her nerves, the Head Maid cautiously spoke up.”
“Lord Chancellor, sleeping here would expose you to the chilly wind, which could harm your health.”
“Hah…”
White breath flowed from Rodwell’s mouth. He didn’t reply, just exhaled and bowed his upper body.
“Lord Chancellor?”
“……”
*Whirring!*
A strong gust of wind filled the throne room. Seeing the wide-open window shake violently, the Head Maid stepped forward.
Setting the lantern down, she closed the window.
Even after closing all eight windows on either side of her, the room remained chilly.
Shivering, she picked up the lantern and went to Rodwell’s side.
“Lord Chancellor, let me escort you to your bedroom.”
“…It’s hot.”
Rodwell’s words were chilling.
The chill in the air was like a dagger to the heart, and the head maid’s complexion turned pale.
“Lord… Chancellor?”
Rodwell slowly raised his head.
He stared at the head maid with a furrowed brow and reached out his hand.
Without hesitation, he grabbed her by the throat.
“Lo……?”
“My anger is boiling over, and I can’t get this insane rage to cool down.”
Rodwell gritted his teeth and glared at the Head Maid. He tightened his grip on the woman’s throat.
His grip on her throat tightened.
The Head Maid desperately tries to pull Rodwell’s arm off, but it’s no use. Rodwell tightened his grip, squeezing her neck with increasing force.
“Kir…… Kirkuck!”
“At the very least, the cold breeze was cooling my anger.”
“I’m…… Sorry…….”
“I’m sorry? SORRY! Sorry again? How dare those who report to me carry apologies as if it absolves them of their mistakes!”
Rodwell twisted the Head Maid’s neck in a fit of rage, and the maid’s body went limp.
*Thud*
He tossed the maid to the floor beside him. He sat back down on the throne and raised his left arm. Gathering mana, he waved his hand toward the window to his left.
*Swoosh!*
The window burst open and a gust of cold air rushed in. Once again, he tried to control his anger.
But the rage wouldn’t subside.
*BAM!*
Rodwell clenched his fist and slammed it down on the throne.
“Damn it…….”
This was a mission that could not fail. The King of the Adrian Kingdom must be the Second Prince.
That was the Demon Church’s plan, and his own.
*Flash*
A black light converged in front of Rodwell’s face. Demonic energy flowed out of the black light in the form of a sphere.
Rodwell bit his lip and stepped down from the throne.
He knelt on the floor and bowed his head.
-Rodwell.
A voice flowed out of the darkness.
Just hearing it made him shudder. But he never allowed it to show. Balling his fists, he pushed his patience to the limit.
“Yes.”
-You messed around with the Sinister. You did something you weren’t ordered to do.
“……”
-Moreover, even with the use of the Sinister, you still failed to accomplish the task for the Adrian Kingdom. How disappointing. It seems that punishment is necessary after a long time.
At the mention of punishment, his heart beat wildly, but there was only one word to which he could reply.
“Yes.”
-All plans for the Oberg Empire are scrapped. Abort your mission immediately and return to base.
“Yes.”
Long after the blackness faded, Rodwell pushed himself to his feet.
“Ke….”
“…Keheh.”
Letting out a self-deprecating laugh, Rodwell sat back in his throne and threw his head back.
“Kahahahahahaha.”
After laughing for a while, he rubbed his face and sighed deeply
“I can’t believe I survived all that…”
The image was still clear in his mind.
The lab where he’d been kidnapped and taken. The experiments he’d been subjected to while bound from head to toe by the priests of the Demon Church.
Rodwell remembered every single thing they did.
The way they beat a child for disagreeing with them, the way they placed a syringe the size of a finger on a woman’s body.
The days of enduring because he didn’t want to die.
The end result was being escorted to the main facility under the name of Experiment Number 000023.
The memories after that were nonexistent.
When he regained consciousness, he had become the dog of the Demon Church and was on a series of missions.
To be precise, not long after he handed Henry Baskervan over to Burning Hell.
‘At that time, the brainwashing had been undone.’
Despite the fact that he had been de-brainwashed, he didn’t show any hint of it, and he continued to operate as a dog of the Demon Church. In his mind, he had a plan.
Revenge.
To destroy what the Demon Church wanted, to kill the god who made him live this fucked-up life.
That was Rodwell’s idea of revenge.
The Adrian Kingdom was his first step toward revenge.
But before he could begin, everything was ruined.
The Sinister emerged sooner than expected, and even with its demise, someone unexpected stepped into the spotlight.
The youngest princess of the Adrian Kingdom.
Rebecca.
“…Kahahaha.”
The person who should have been killed survived, and was hailed as a hero by the people.
It’s a strange situation if she doesn’t become king.
The carefully orchestrated plan to kill the crown prince and put a scarecrow in his place was completely blown.
“Wheew….”
He let out a deep sigh and rubbed a hand down his face.
Going back to the headquarters of the Demon Church was like walking into Hell itself. The brainwashing and education that would take place there.
He didn’t want to be subjected to that horror again.
“I’m not going back….”
Although his original plan was ruined, it wasn’t completely devoid of options. There was still one last resort left.
Rodwell rose to his feet.
After glancing at the head maid on the floor, he strode out of the Throne Rooom and walked towards the Emperor’s quarters.
An ornate door.
He pushed it open, and inside was a large bed, a man and a woman sleeping together.
“Mnya……”
The Emperor had gained weight.
Himus von Oberg.
He grabbed the man by the throat and forced him out of bed. The woman lying next to him opened her mouth in surprise.
Using magic, he murdered the woman.
A still-drunk Himmus stared at Rodwell, his eyes glazed over.
“What?….. Keok!”
Rodwell used his magic to levitate Himus into the air and walked out of the emperor’s chambers and down the hallway.
Where there was a rotating staircase.
He walked down it and headed for the lowest level.
Killing every guard he encountered along the way, until he reached the basement, where he found a secret chamber.
It had obvious signs that it had been neglected for a long time.
Rodwell had found it while rebuilding the Imperial Palace. A place that was key to the Demon Church’s plans.
The Emperor’s Tomb.
The resting place of the emperors who had led the empire, where only the descendants of said emperors were allowed to enter.
It was precisely because of this place that he needed Himus.
Using wind magic, Rodwell cut open Himus’s palm and held his bleeding hand to the secret chamber.
“What…. What the hell are you doing!”
As soon as Himus’ blood touched the chamber, a change occurred. The blood quickly spread through the chamber.
A sigil of the Oberg Empire drawn in blood.
With that, the tightly closed chamber opened.
It opened to reveal a long cavern.
On either side of the chamber were golden coffins containing the remains of the emperors.
Rodwell walked forward and entered the tomb.
In the deepest part was an ornate coffin.
A coffin made of diamonds, which were more expensive than gold. The emperor inside was named Rudkal.
The first emperor who founded the Oberg Empire.
“Here it is.”
He needed a key to open it.
Rodwell moved the floating Himus to the side, then sharpened his hand and plunged it into Himus’s chest.
“Keukk!”
He pulled out Himus’s heart, held it up to the diamond coffin, and with great force burst it.
A stream of blood flowed and hit the coffin.
*Oooooh!*
*Rumble*
A strong vibration rang out, and the coffin lid began to tremble. Rodwell grinned as he watched the coffin slowly open.
A thick stream of demonic energy flowed out of the coffin.
Reaching inside the coffin, he picked up the object emitting the demonic energy. It was a finger, wrapped in black bandages.
“The Demon God’s index finger.”
The last emperor of the Oberg Empire wanted to become a god.
And so he began to collect the pieces of the Demon God’s body, the first demon to ascend to godhood.
When the Goddess of Creation learned of this, she sent out an oracle and appointed six individuals. These six people worked together to topple the Oberg Empire.
They divided the Demon God’s flesh collected by the Emperor into six pieces.
So that no one could collect all the pieces and do something terrible.
But
The last emperor of the empire kept a piece of the Demon God’s flesh hidden inside his ancestor’s coffin.
It was this index finger.
“A pity.”
Because the flesh of the demon god owned by the Adrian Kingdom is the most powerful, Rodwell wanted to have it at all costs.
Now that things have come to this.
He’ll just have to make do with this.
Rodwell opened his mouth wide.
*Gulp!*

Redin left the Adrian Kingdom and flew straight to the Oberg Empire.
As he approached the empire’s capital.
*OOoooooohh!!*
He felt an intense demonic energy that made his entire body tingle. Wanting to know the reason, he looked in the direction of the source.
The Imperial Palace loomed overhead.
It was emitting mind-numbing demonic energy. Those already in the palace were unable to withstand it and became demons.
Those who had become demons had torn through the capital, and flames were raging throughout the city.
Abi Gyu-hwan¹
“There’s no way he broke the egg himself…….”
There was only one thing that came to mind.
A piece of the demon’s flesh in the place called the Emperor’s Tomb.
“Did he consume the finger?”

TL/N:
1. The Korean term “아비규환” (pronounced as “abigyuhwan”) is a vivid expression with a figurative meaning.
아비 (ab) is derived from the Sanskrit term “Avīci”, which signifies a hellish realm of suffering.
규환 (gyuhwan) translates to “agonizing cries” or “appalling confusion”.
Overall Interpretation: When people are caught in a desperate, tumultuous circumstance, they cry out and struggle, much like the tormented souls in a hellish abyss.
So, “아비규환” encapsulates the intensity of suffering and chaos. It’s a powerful expression that conveys the emotional turmoil experienced during challenging times.
PS: Can’t find a English word for it so had to use the Original Word instead.
