Chapter 139 - Successor (5)
Chapter 139
Successor (5)
Western region of the Adrian Kingdom.
The Varanmar Canyons.
The unrelenting hordes of demons have ceased their advance. A short distance from the canyon, they could be seen regrouping.
Rebecca lowered her spyglass¹ and surveyed the scene.
“We’re running out of time! We need to move fast!”
“Yes!”
“Bring more wood here!”
“Quickly retrieve the arrows on the ground!”
At the bottom of the canyon, the broken wooden barricades were reconstructed, and mages were setting up defensive barriers by drawing new magic circles.
Soldiers scavenged supplies like the arrows for recycling and carried the wounded from the battle.
“Princess.”
She turned to see the commander of the duke’s knights approaching.
“Yes? What’s going on?”
“They say there’s a meeting going on at the Unified Command Center. You should head there right away.”
“Alright.”
Rebecca glanced at the demonic legions converging in the distance, then turned and headed toward the Unified Command Center.
The command center was built at the end of a canyon.
As she reached the enormous camp, she began to see people around her bowing their heads in greeting.
“Greetings, Princess.”
“Indeed.”
She greeted them and entered the Unified Command Center. As she parted the tent flaps and stepped inside, she found the heirs gathered there.
Half-siblings.
She could feel the jealousy and disapproval in their eyes, even more intense than in the palace.
Rebecca kept her expression stoic and walked to an empty seat and sat down.
The second prince clicked his tongue and opened his mouth.
“Then, since we are all here, let us proceed with the meeting.”
Then Count Linke, the second prince’s advisor, approached and bowed.
“Then I’ll call the emergency meeting to order. Before we get started, I’d like to brief you on the current situation. Would you all please look here?”
Count Linke pointed to the map on the table. The blue pieces were in the Varanmar Canyon, where they were currently stationed, and the red pieces were in the plains at the entrance.
The Kingdom forces and the Demons.
Pointing to the red horses in the center, he spoke.
“We have now defeated three boss-level demons that were being controlled by the demon known as Sinister, and he is reorganizing his demon army. Also….”
He added a few more red horses.
“The Sinister is creating additional demons to replenish their dwindling numbers in the Demon Legion, while our forces have been reduced.”
Count Linke took out a third of the blue horses.
“Not counting the wounded and dead, we simply don’t have enough soldiers to fight right now.”
“Can’t we just hold out for another day?”
Count Linke answered the third prince’s question.
“Yes. That was the initial plan, but we’ve gotten word from the Holy Empire that it might take a little longer.”
“Umm…”
“They apologized for not being able to make it in time and offered to provide us with supplies, but it’s hard to deal with an army of demons with just that.”
Demons are endlessly created.
There were only so many troops that could fight them. Over time, it would be the humans who would tire, and their defenses would be compromised.
A reality that was understood by everyone in attendance.
“So.”
The First Princess raised her eyes.
“What’s your point, Count Linke?”
“I think we should start building a second line of defense.”
Count Linke pointed to a spot on the map. Some distance from the canyon. There was a narrow plain, not as wide as Varanmar Canyon, but narrow enough.
He placed the blue horse there.
“If we establish a second line of defense here, and bring in the secondary reinforcements waiting in the kingdom, we should be able to buy time until the Knights of the Holy Empire arrive.”
“Then why not strike at Sinister now? Isn’t the demonic legion considerably weakened at the moment?”
All eyes turned to Rebecca.
Count Linke looked at Rebecca and gave her a disapproving look.
“It’s not possible.”
“Why?”
“The possibility of killing the Sinister isn’t impossible, but… according to inquiries made to the Holy Empire, it was stated that the entire Royal Knights Order must charge together just to have a chance to defeat it. Rather than sacrificing them all to slay the Monster, wouldn’t it be better to stall for time and minimize casualties by receiving help from the Holy Empire, Princess?”
“Avoid Casualties…. All right.”
Rebecca closed her mouth.
“Then I’ll resume.”
Count Linke cleared his throat and began to outline the plans for the second line of defense.
“It will take us a day or so to move through the areas and fully establish a second line of defense.”
“Unless the demons are fools, they won’t just sit idly by, will they?”
Count Linke nodded at the Second Prince’s words.
“That’s right, and that’s why we need someone to stay here and buy us time, like the advance vanguard that slowed down the demonic legion in the beginning.”
“Wouldn’t it be better to have the same people who did it?”
Most nodded in agreement with the First Princess. Then the Third Prince spoke up in strong agreement.
“If we have the strongest forces, and give them some support, we can try to take down the Sinister, like the youngest wants to do, right?”
Rebecca thought of Redin in the rush of the moment. She wondered what he would have said in this situation.
And the answer was so simple.
“Okay, I’ll do it.”
Rebecca’s quick acceptance was met with a troubled look from Count Linke.
“Princess, this will be very dangerous for you.”
“How long do I have to hold out?”
Count Linke explained the plan in detail.
“The rest of the troops, excluding those accompanying the princess, will teleport to the area of the second defense line through the palace mages. So, Your Highness, you only need to hold out here for 12 hours. Then, you can move to the second defense line with the palace mages.”
“Is 12 hours enough time?”
“Yes. It takes about twelve hours for the demons to travel from here to the second line of defense, so that gives us a whole day.”
“Are you moving right away?”
“Yes.”
Rebecca nodded and rose from her seat.
“Then just make sure the supplies are properly handed over. I’ll go get the troops and hold the first line of defense.”
Rebecca walked out of the meeting.
Count Linke looked at the other remaining heirs.
“I would like the princess and princes to rally your troops and gather here as well. We’re in a hurry, so I’ll need you to be quick.”
“Yes.”
“Alright.”
The First Princess and the Third Prince also left the meeting room. Only the Second Prince and Count Linke remained in the unified command center.
Sighing heavily, the Second Prince turned his head to regard Count Linke.
“Why is Rebecca still alive?”
“The assassination must have failed.”
“I thought you said it was guaranteed to succeed.”
The Second Prince gritted his teeth.
Then Count Linke bowed his head deeply.
“I apologize.”
“So what are you going to do?”
Count Linke pulled something from his breast pocket. A glass vial the size of two fingers combined. Inside was a black shard.
“We can use this.”
“What is it?”
“It’s some sort of stimulant that can send the Sinister over there into a rampage. If we feed it to the Sinister after we leave….”
Count Linke chuckled and made a throat-slitting gesture with his fingers.
“It’ll surely kill her.”
“Make sure you do it right this time, because if you slip up and Rebecca gains credit again due to this mistake, our plan will be ruined.”
“Understood.”

[Shadow Movement] quickly transported him to Varanmar Canyon.
Walking toward the cliffs from the campsite.
Redin saw a much smaller army than before. He could no longer see all the troops that had filled the cliffs.
In the meantime, Rebecca was busy moving around, engaged in a serious conversation with the Duke’s Knight Commander.
She walked over to him.
“Do me a favor.”
“Of course.”
Redin approached Rebecca as he watched the Duke’s Knight Commander jump down to the bottom of the cliff.
“What’s going on?”
“There was an emergency meeting.”
Rebecca explained what had happened in his absence.
The contents of the emergency meeting and its final conclusion.
How all the other Heirs’ forces had been pulled back to the second line of defense by the palace mages.
“Hmm…….”
The first word that popped into his head after hearing everything Rebecca had to say.
‘Why?’
There were shields built by the mages, wooden barricades, and plenty of supplies.
Even with slightly fewer personnel, the situation was manageable enough to cover adequately.
Why did they hand over the opportunity to gain recognition and build reputation to Rebecca and leave at a time when they could have gained more credit than ever before.
The first princess and the third prince.
Even if they were forced to give up due to the small number of troops they had with them, it wasn’t the same with the Second Prince.
“I don’t have a good feeling about this.”
The fact that the second prince made this choice…
It meant that upon the failure of the assassination, they devised a new plan.
He turned his gaze to the Sinister.
As a spy sent by Rodwell, it was likely they knew of the Sinister’s existence.
What if they were planning to use it to eliminate Rebecca?
“…… Just wait for a moment.”
“Where are you going?”
“I need to go check something out in private. I’ll explain in detail when I come back. For now, just make sure everything is secure here.”
Redin left the canyon, leaving Rebecca behind.
Using the trees to hide from the other soldiers and knights, he used the cover of the shadows to move in the direction of the Monster.
Since it wasn’t that far away, it didn’t take him long to reach it.
“Keueeee.”
“RAAAARRRGHHH.”
The demons emitted strange, unintelligible cries. Redin moved through the forest full of them, scanning his surroundings.
A normal demon on the far side.
A little further in, an egg made of hard stone, like a chrysalis.
*Crack* *Crack*
He approached the egg.
It was cracking and breaking apart.
*Gurgle* *Gurgle*
Magma flowed out of it. The surrounding trees and grass burned and melted. The magma spread out in all directions.
*Crack*
*Crack*
The eggs, which were kept at a certain distance apart, cracked open and magma continued to flow out, revealing the demons inside.
Demons of various types emitting clouds of white smoke.
The amount of demonic energy emanating from them was unusual. The demons, fully hatched from their eggs, rose to their feet.
*Oooooooohhh!!*
When they spread their shoulders wide, demonic energy spread in all directions. Judging by the energy they emitted, they all appeared to be boss-level monsters.
“What did you do?”
Creating additional boss-level demons.
It wasn’t an order he’d given to the Sinister.
He unsheathed his sword.
If the boss-class demons rushed into the canyon at this rate, there would be no stopping them with the current troops.
Redin created an aura blade and swung it forward.
*Whooosh*
After disposing of the boss-level demons in front of him, he headed toward where Sinister was.
Sinister was writhing on the ground.
His body was bubbling and boiling like a liquid. There was only one time it exhibited such symptoms.
When he swallowed a piece of the demon god’s flesh.
“Keeeeeeek!”
With a sickening cackle, the Sinister raised its head.
As soon as Redin saw the look in his eyes, he realized.
The Sinister was out of control.
