Chapter 137 - Successor (3)
Chapter 137
Successor (3)
The battle went on for about a day.
The knights who were with him in the vanguard fought decently enough, and held out longer than he’d expected, managing to stall for time.
However,
As the battle raged on, he was running out of steam. He had used up all of the potions he’d brought with him and was physically and mentally exhausted.
“This is the end! Run with all you’ve got!”
The knights responded with determination to his shout, faces set in grim resolve.
“Yes!”
The knights rushed into the canyon.
Redin maneuvered to ensure that they could enter safely.
Rebecca was battling the demons.
He rushed to her side, swinging his sword to clear them out. With an aura blade, he mowed the demons down around the entrance.
*Tramp* *Tramp* *Tramp*
He whirled around to see more demons flooding in than he had slain.
“Let’s go.”
He pulled Rebecca into the canyon.
Beyond the knights, some distance away, he could see the first line of defense.
Where the canyon narrowed the most.
It was lined with wooden barricades, with a blue shield in front of them.
Behind the barricades were soldiers with shields and spears, and on the cliffs were soldiers who carried bows and arrows.
Knights were positioned at various places.
They stood ready to leap off the precipices at any moment and pierce through the heart of the demon legion.
“Be careful behind you!”
A knight shouted urgently as he crossed the barrier and entered the defense line.
Turning around, he saw a sleek, monkey-like demon coming toward him and Rebecca.
A nimble and agile one.
It was one of the higher-ranked demons.
A demon that possessed razor-sharp nails.
*Clang!*
Parrying the attack with his sword, he formed an aura blade and slashed at the demon. Seeing the demon that was sliced in half disappear, he turned his head.
“Argh!”
A demon’s claw was lodged in Rebecca’s shoulder. He jumped forward and slashed at the demon next to her.
*Splat*
*Splatter*
He quickly dispatched two of them and then crouched down, offering his back for Rebecca.
He leaped with her on his back in that state.
They passed through the magical barrier erected by the mages, traversed the wooden barricades, and arrived inside the first line of defense.
“Now! Everyone attack!”
An order sounded from the top of the cliff in time.
The attack rained down on the demons that filled the canyon.
The arrows bearing holy water bottles rained down from the cliffs.
*Crack*
*Shatter*
The glass shattered and holy water rained down. The demons screamed and thrashed in agony.
“Kkeueeeeg!”
The holy water clung to the bodies of the demons, igniting a white flame that surged upward. As the demons writhed and collided with each other, screaming in agony, the flames rapidly spread.
Above, volley of fire arrows rained down further driving the demons back and clearing the way.
But it was just the beginning.
As more demons fell, Redin turned his attention towards the deeper recesses of the defense line.
Knights receiving treatment from the priests.
Approaching them, he set Rebecca down and called for one of the priests to tend to her wounds.
“Cure.”
Holy power erupted from the priest’s hands and healed the wound on Rebecca’s shoulder.
“I can only perform minor healing to conserve divine energy. You should go up to the command post and receive more advanced treatment from the priests there.”
The priest bowed slightly and moved to attend to the rest of the knights.
“Ugh…”
It seems like the pain still lingers.
Rebecca’s face contorted into a grimace.
He want to give her a potion right now.
Not only were there a lot of eyes around them, but Rebecca had to be wounded to catch the assassin off guard.
“Let’s go back.”
“Yeah.”
With Rebecca and the knights in tow, he headed off.
At the top of the canyon, a unified camp had been set up to command the first line of defense.
They passed through it and headed for their own troops.
Rebecca’s troops were on the left side of the cliff, closer to the demons.
As Rebecca and her knights approached the soldiers, who were firing arrows furiously, the commander of the duke’s knights raised his sword.
“The princess is here!”
“Waaaaaaaah!”
The morale of the soldiers soared.
Rebecca, with a determined expression, glanced at the soldiers and then turned to him, asking.
“Do you mind if I stay here and watch?”
“Hn.”
As Rebecca approached the cliff and watched the battle, he gave instructions to the knights in the vanguard.
“We’re going to have to fight harder starting tonight, so let’s go back to the makeshift tent, eat, and get some rest.”
“Yes.”
After sending the knights off, he walked to Rebecca’s side and looked out over the battlefield.
An army of demons beyond the canyon.
The quantity of the enemy forces was overwhelming, to the point where it seemed like all he could see were demons. At the forefront was the sinister leading the legions, and around him were the demons that assisted him.
A boss monster typical of a Queen-level dungeon.
There were three of them in total.
One of them was leading an army of demons toward the canyon. The Knight Commander gulped at the sight.
“Enemies are coming! Hurl holy water at them all!”
“…Yes!”
Arrows with holy water rained down into the canyon.
Just like the first time, the demons screamed and melted as the holy water hit them. However, there was one difference from before.
They were accompanied by a boss monster.
The gorilla-like creature launched itself into the air and slammed into the blue shield.
*Boom!*
The shockwave spread, and cracks began to appear in the shield created by the mages. The demon, however, didn’t stop there and pounded its fists against the shield.
*Fwoosh!*
The powerful demonic energy in its fist spread out in all directions, healing the demons on the ground.
The demons rose to their feet and charged at the shield again.
“Oomph-Oomph!”
The boss-level demon roared as it pounded its chest, and a black shield of demonic energy appeared and surrounded it.
The holy water and fire bolts that rained down from the sky were deflected by the black shield.
It was impossible to do any significant damage.
If time drags on like this, the barrier created by the wizards will break, and the first line of defense will be breached.
It was time for the knights to move.
Slowly, he looked around to see how the other Heirs were reacting.
The second prince, the first princess, and the third prince.
Each gave their knight the order to descend. Several knights launched themselves over the cliff.
Watching them, he shifted in his feet.
“Are we going down?”
Redin nodded at Rebecca’s question.
“To further boost morale. Show the other heirs that they shouldn’t look down on us.”
“You mean the one who’s coming to kill me, right? To lure him in by pretending to be weak.”
“Correct.”
“Okay. Just make sure you don’t get hurt and come back safe.”
He nodded and jumped off the cliff.
The first knights to arrive brandished their aura-shrouded swords to break the black shield.
*Clang*
*crack*
There was a small crack.
It seems futile to continue in this manner.
He took out Moonlight and formed an Aura Blade, slicing the boss-level demon’s black shield in half.
*Swish*
*Bam*
The black shield shattered, revealing the demons. Redin maintained the Aura Blade and rotated his body.
Using centrifugal force, he slashed at the boss-level demon’s neck.
The blue aura blade flared out like a beam of light, unleashing a tremendous amount of power.
*Thud*

The Second Prince’s Camp.
A man walked out of a tent in the corner-most area. Han, who had been dispatched to kill Rebecca at Rodwell’s request.
The man let out a loud yawn.
“Haaaaaah.”
Han rubbed his tired eyes and stretched his body. He loosened up lightly and cracked his neck, while raising the corners of his mouth as he gazed at the moon in the sky.”
‘Heh’
“It’s a perfect day to see spilled blood.”
Han slipped into another tent nearby and changed into the armor worn by knights. It was painted with the symbols of the Adrian Kingdom, so it was easy to fool the others.
Part of him wanted to just storm in and dance with his sword.
This was in the middle of enemy territory, with mages and skilled knights all around.
If Han did anything conspicuous, he could be killed instantly.
He found greater exhilaration in secretly dispatching her and later witnessing the astonishment on many faces as they learned the truth.
“Time for a little fun.”
He pulled down his helmet and left the tent, moving toward the battlefield.
Currently, the elite knights and soldiers of the Adrian Kingdom were busy dealing with the demonic legions.
The battle had begun around noon and had lasted well into the evening.
“Arrows! Get me some arrows!”
“Holy water, we’re running out!”
“Priest, there’s a wounded man here!”
The atmosphere of the battlefield was thick with the smell of blood and an air of desperation. Han was intoxicated by the atmosphere that made his body tingle.
His steps became lighter.
Enjoying the atmosphere, he walked around the battlefield, surveying the situation. Most of the soldiers and knights were exhausted.
On the other hand, the demons showed no signs of exhaustion.
They had raced through the canyon, relentlessly pushing against the kingdom. As a result, the shield the mages had created was on the verge of breaking.
Once that barrier is broken, the demons will rush in, sweeping over the wooden barricades and killing the soldiers and knights behind them.
The soldiers holding spears and shields trembled with fear.
“Oh…… here they come!”
“Commander! The last remaining demon boss is coming!”
The Demon at Sinister’s side.
The tension on the battlefield grew even more tense as the powerful demon charged in, leading an army of demons.
All eyes turned to the demon army.
Han grinned from ear to ear.
He walked over to Rebecca’s camp on the other side of the Second Prince’s encampment and blended in with the knights.
“Are we going to need to call for the princess?”
“No. Let her sleep, and we’ll observe the situation.”
Han recalled the information that Rebecca had been wounded.
She’d been out there so late, commanding troops.
If she collapsed from exhaustion, she likely wouldn’t wake up even if someone came near her. Of course, he’d packed sleeping potion in case she woke up.
“Knights who will be on duty, get ready for battle, and those who are off duty, get inside and get some rest.”
“Yes!”
Han nestled among the group of knights and moved toward where the tents were located. He surveyed several tents, alert to any signs of life.
The tent with the kingdom flag at the far end.
He could sense two figures in there. One would be Rebecca, and the other would be a highly skilled knight.
A man who had single-handedly defeated a boss-level demon.
‘I’m sure he’s exhausted and passed out by now.’
The knight collapsed immediately after defeating the demon, depleted of mana and with dwindling strength.
He would have died if the knights who had gone down with him hadn’t carried him to safety.
Han even heard it from the priest who healed him. He suffered from excessive physical exertion and would need at least two days to recover.
Everything was laid out perfectly.
Han moved stealthily in the darkness toward the tent where Rebecca was. Erasing any traces and mana, he dispersed the sleeping potion around the tent, preparing for the possibility of her waking up.
Perfectly prepared for the assassination.
He slashed at the back of the tent, not at the entrance, and tore at the fabric.
*Riip*
The man and woman who should have been lying on their backs were standing, their swords raised.
The knight smiled broadly and waved.
“Rodwell sent you, didn’t he? Good to see you.”
‘Damn.’
