Chapter 22: Natasha VS Wanda
Natasha stood inside an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of New York, her arms crossed, body relaxed but ready. The dim flicker of an overhead light cast long shadows across the floor, but her attention was locked on one presence alone—the woman floating just a few feet in front of her. Wanda Maximoff.
The red glow of Chaos Magic curled around Wanda's fingertips like smoke, the energy crackling in the silence between them. She hovered just slightly above the ground, arms loose at her sides, watching Natasha with something between curiosity and amusement.
"You don't like being called, do you?" Natasha finally broke the silence, voice smooth, controlled.
Wanda smirked. "I don't like being summoned."
Natasha tilted her head slightly, watching, calculating. "And yet, you came."
Wanda let herself drift down to the ground, landing with an elegant step, her long coat swaying around her. "Of course I did. You interest me." Her voice was smooth, almost teasing, but there was a sharpness beneath it—an unspoken challenge.
Natasha didn't react, didn't let anything show. She had dealt with unpredictable, volatile people before, but Wanda was something different. There was an underlying tension in the air, as if the very space between them vibrated with something unseen. Natasha recognized it for what it was—power, raw and barely leashed.
"Let's not waste time," Natasha said coolly. "You know why I called you here. We need to talk about Kara."
Wanda's smirk widened just slightly. "Of course we do. Everything leads back to her, doesn't it?"
Natasha didn't deny it. "She draws attention. People like you. People like me. If we don't control what surrounds her, someone else will."
Wanda stepped forward, slowly, almost lazily, but Natasha could feel the weight of her presence. "And what exactly are you offering me, Romanoff?"
Natasha met her gaze evenly. "A place at the table."
Wanda let out a soft chuckle, tilting her head as if considering the offer. "You think you can control me?"
Natasha's lips curled at the edges, not quite a smile. "No. But I can offer you something better."
Wanda raised a brow, intrigued. "And what's that?"
Natasha stepped forward now, closing the space between them. "Kara."
The glow of Wanda's magic flickered, her expression unreadable.
"You're already orbiting her," Natasha continued, voice steady, unwavering. "I'm offering you a way to stay close. To protect what's yours. Because if you think you're the only one watching her, you're wrong."
Wanda's smirk didn't falter, but something in her gaze shifted. "And let me guess… you and your little assassin friend, Gwen, already have everything figured out?"
Natasha didn't blink. "We have a plan. You can either work with us or stay out of the way. But what you can't do is work against us. That won't end well for anyone."
Wanda regarded her in silence for a moment, the red glow in her eyes pulsing slightly. Then, to Natasha's mild surprise, she laughed—a quiet, knowing sound. "You're fun, Natasha," she mused, crossing her arms, amusement dancing in her expression. "I can see why Kara keeps you around."
Natasha didn't rise to the bait. "So, what's your answer?"
Wanda's smile lingered, but she exhaled softly. "I'll work with you… for now. But let's make one thing clear—I don't take orders."
Natasha inclined her head slightly. "Neither do I."
A moment of understanding passed between them—an unspoken acknowledgment of two powerful women standing on equal ground. Wanda finally stepped back, the glow around her hands dimming.
"This should be fun," Wanda murmured, turning on her heel, her coat billowing as she walked toward the exit. "I'll be seeing you, Romanoff."
Natasha watched her leave, her mind already working through the implications. Wanda was in. That was the first step.
But she wasn't the type to follow rules. That would have to be managed.
Back at the guesthouse, Natasha found Gwen waiting, arms crossed, expression set in something close to a scowl.
"You brought her in," Gwen stated flatly.
Natasha nodded, stepping past her into the kitchen. "She was already involved. Now she's manageable."
Gwen let out a sharp exhale, following Natasha, her irritation clear. "She's not manageable. She's insane."
Natasha poured herself a drink, taking a slow sip before speaking. "So are we."
Gwen's eyes narrowed. "She's going to try to take Kara from us."
Natasha set the glass down, turning to face her fully. "And if she does, we'll handle it."
Gwen studied her for a long moment before exhaling, her shoulders relaxing just slightly. "I don't like it."
"You don't have to," Natasha replied smoothly. "You just have to trust that I know what I'm doing."
Gwen's lips pressed into a thin line, but after a pause, she nodded. "Fine. But I swear, if she steps out of line—"
"She won't," Natasha interrupted, calm, certain. "Not if she wants to stay close to Kara."
That, at least, seemed to pacify Gwen. For now.
Later that evening, Kara lounged on the couch, scrolling through her phone as Natasha settled into the seat beside her. Gwen lingered nearby, arms crossed, ever-watchful.
Kara stretched, tilting her head toward Natasha with a lazy smile. "You've been busy."
Natasha smirked, sipping her drink. "You could say that."
Kara reached out absentmindedly, brushing her fingers against Natasha's arm. "You always take care of everything, don't you?"
Natasha stiffened slightly at the touch, though she didn't pull away. "It's what I do."
Kara's smile widened, her voice dipping into something almost teasing. "Because you want to?"
Natasha exhaled slowly, setting her drink down. "Maybe."
Gwen, watching from across the room, scowled slightly but said nothing.
Kara, completely oblivious to the effect she was having, chuckled softly and stretched again. "Well, I appreciate it."
Natasha only nodded, her mind elsewhere.
She had secured Wanda's cooperation. Gwen was on board, despite her reservations. The foundation was in place.
Now, all they had to do was ensure Kara stayed exactly where she belonged—with them.
One step closer.
