Chapter 994: Ambushed
While speaking, three armed vehicles reversed into position, forming a triangle, perfectly blocking the entrance and sealing the martial arts school's gate completely. The rear doors opened, and the Lieutenant General ordered the guards to throw Shijing Chun into one vehicle. The three armed vehicles then securely closed their doors and successively drove out, leaving no one aware of which vehicle Shijing Chun was in.
Soon, under the protection of several police cars from both front and rear, the three armed vehicles left the scene. The Lieutenant General turned to Luo Zheng and asked, "Is there anything we've missed?"
"Clear the mines, and also, arrange for a thorough investigation of the surroundings. Now that Shijing Chun has left, the assassins ambushing around might also withdraw," Luo Zheng said softly, analyzing whether Shijing Chun had another trick up his sleeve.
"Leave it to me," the Lieutenant General agreed readily, summoning a Major and giving him a few instructions before the Major hurried off.
Soon afterwards, several demolition experts entered the martial arts school. Luo Zheng felt that he had no further role on site and staying around was meaningless, so he bid farewell to the Lieutenant General. Tong Haisheng arrived with several guards for protection. Luo Zheng didn't object, but frowned slightly in distaste as he saw the Secretary and the Police Bureau Chief approach with expressions of eager enthusiasm. Instead, he changed direction and walked the other way, preferring not to engage with such politicians.
Tong Haisheng said nothing and escorted Luo Zheng to a vehicle, driving away from the scene. Luo Zheng used his earpiece to contact Lan Xing, briefly explaining the situation before feeling exhausted and asking Tong Haisheng to take him to a hotel.
At this moment, Niu Gang led his team back to the hotel right on time. Luo Zheng asked Tong Haisheng to lead his team away and took the elevator upstairs with Niu Gang and the others. Upon reaching the guest room, Shi Tao and others came to greet them. Seeing Niu Gang and his team drenched like drowned rats, and the exhausted Luo Zheng, Shi Tao said enviously, "You guys had all the action; we were bored counting ants here. Next time it'll be our turn." With that, he glanced at Luo Zheng.
Luo Zheng nodded and smiled, saying, "Alright then, you guys. I'll catch some sleep first."
His injuries hadn't fully healed, and his body tired easily. The battle with Shijing Chun left him drained of energy. Upon entering the room, Luo Zheng fell asleep immediately, unconcerned about safety with Niu Gang and Shi Tao around.
When he awoke, it was already dinner time. Reports came in from various quarters. Beijing remained quiet as ever, Hong Meihua got nothing from her surveillance at the airport, Lan Xue's monitoring of the national routes yielded no results, and Ghost Hand and Mountain Eagle interrogated the base's captives twice but to no avail. Even Shijing Chun yielded no useful information, although nearly a hundred kilograms of explosives were found at the martial arts school.
The issue at Shijing Chun's martial arts school was considered temporarily resolved, and a surprising seizure of explosives at sea was a major accomplishment, yet Luo Zheng couldn't feel happy. Having come to Shanghai to deal with the Reincarnation Organization, Shijing Chun and the explosives were merely unexpected gains. Despite capturing two male and one female Reincarnation Killers, Niu Gang led rigorous interrogations, nearly pushing them to the brink, without extracting any valuable intelligence.
Luo Zheng trusted Niu Gang's abilities; if nothing could be extracted, then they truly knew nothing. Seemingly extensive clues suddenly vanished into thin air, and the adversaries seemed to have evaporated. Luo Zheng felt a sense of powerless frustration. Could this be the end? Had the opponents given up?
The answer was negative. Luo Zheng knew enemies could never be entirely eradicated; struggles between nations persist eternally. The fight against assassin organizations won't disappear either. Temporary peace signifies nothing, merely that the adversaries are observing, licking their wounds, and waiting for a better opportunity to strike.
That evening, Luo Zheng, accompanied by Niu Gang and Shi Tao, returned overnight to Beijing, taking Shijing Chun and the three Reincarnation Killers along. Luo Zheng sat in the backseat of the same vehicle as Shijing Chun, with Niu Gang in the front passenger seat, driven by a guard from the Guard Command. The vehicle was arranged by the Lieutenant General, all military vehicles, and a fully armed escort unit trailed behind. None would dare target such a convoy.
Speeding overnight, with the convoy on the highway, they felt secure. The high speed rendered snipers ineffective, and Shijing Chun's pulse detonator had been removed, eliminating concerns about Shijing Chun being sniped. Racing onward, Luo Zheng rarely had interest in the surrounding scenery, but regrettably, it was night, raining heavily, preventing any view outside.
Throughout the journey, Luo Zheng noticed Shijing Chun's dejected and silent demeanor, seemingly burdened with worries. Luo Zheng paid little mind, listening to the raindrops striking the windows and the car body, ironically calming him. Gazing at the raging downpour through the night's veil, his thoughts soared.
Since encountering Lan Xue, life had transformed dramatically. Luo Zheng had never imagined becoming a Special Forces soldier one day and joining the most secretive Soldier King unit, the National Blade Special Combat Team. A former border sentry, now a Major in Special Forces, merely two years had passed. This life, indeed...
Recalling countless life-and-death scenarios from the past two years, the comrades living and dying together, thoughts of Lan Xue and family, Luo Zheng's heart grew increasingly serene, feeling that it was all worthwhile.
"Boom!" Suddenly, a massive explosion rang out, akin to a thunderclap.
"Was that thunder?" Luo Zheng wondered, glancing upward. In the dim rain-soaked night, nothing was visible, yet the convoy suddenly braked hard, accompanied by piercing screeches, causing panic. The strong forward momentum forced Luo Zheng to brace against the front passenger seat. Ahead, amidst the convoy was a fiery explosion, flipping a small car.
That car was initially meant for Luo Zheng, but he insisted on sitting with Shijing Chun, swapping seats with the escort unit captain. Horrified, Luo Zheng's eyes widened, fixating on the overturned car, engulfed in flames under the torrential downpour, likely hit by something triggering the fuel tank.
Despite successive tail-end collisions, the convoy managed to stop. People from the vehicles poured outside, and Luo Zheng quickly reacted, yelling, "Get off the car!" He simultaneously tugged on Shijing Chun, only to notice Shijing Chun smiling in an unsetting way. A scowl crossed Luo Zheng's face as he roared, "Damn it, you knew there was an ambush, didn't you?"
"You must die, hahaha!" Shijing Chun suddenly burst into hysterical laughter.
Worried that Shijing Chun's laughter would give away their position, Luo Zheng delivered a hand chop, knocking Shijing Chun unconscious. He dragged Shijing Chun out and swiftly took cover on the other side of the vehicle while roaring, "Niu Gang!"
"Here!" Niu Gang rushed over, drenched completely by the rain, with eyebrows raised like swords and a face firm with fury. Clearly, he was thoroughly enraged. An ambush on a military convoy was a disgrace, and as a passionate soldier, Niu Gang couldn't tolerate such events.
"Take them down," Luo Zheng ordered coldly.
"Yes!" Niu Gang roared, "Brothers, follow me!"
