Chapter 1061: Scheming Against Tang Tian
The sudden gunfire not only startled Luo Zheng but also gave Hook a big scare. Hook wasn't aware either and cautiously glanced at the direction of the gunshots, and then began to whisper with those around him using their native dialect, which Luo Zheng couldn't understand. He signaled his own people to stay calm. Soon, Hook looked at Luo Zheng with a serious expression and said with a frown, "It's possible that our forces on the outskirts have discovered the enemy. Without communication devices, we can't communicate in time."
Luo Zheng knew Hook's tribe was poor, with guns seized from the last battle at the Japanese base, and lacking two-way radios and other instant communication devices. He also understood that gunfire wouldn't be started randomly, especially such intense shooting, so his expression darkened and he immediately said, "Have everyone evacuate immediately to the place you mentioned last time. We'll cover the retreat. Move quickly; it's possible the enemy is encircling us from other directions."
"Understood." Hook knew the enemy was strong; in such a place with no natural defenses, they were no match for the enemy. Staying would be meaningless and would only be a burden, so he immediately shouted out in their native dialect.
Soon, the team in the woods began to withdraw in an orderly fashion. Luo Zheng quickly led his people to find cover, while Hook stayed, along with over thirty others, taking cover near Luo Zheng. Hook approached Luo Zheng alone and whispered, "At most, it's half a day's journey to the planned location. What's next?"
"Inform your outer line teams to withdraw to our location as quickly as possible," Luo Zheng decisively said.
"Alright." Hook responded and waved over a few people, giving them instructions in a low voice. These individuals quickly sprinted into the woods and soon disappeared from sight.
Everyone waited patiently, unsure of how many enemies there were. Luo Zheng watched as heads moved rapidly through the woods, desperately wanting to halt everyone and mount a defense to strike back at the enemy, but reason told him not to. The terrain offered no defensible position for the Hook Tribe's armed forces; counter-attacking would mean wasting lives, especially against powerful surrounding enemies, which would definitely end in disastrous defeat.
The group was too large, taking over ten minutes to retreat. At this time, several more teams gradually emerged from the woods ahead, and under Hook's orders, they vigorously pursued the main force. Soon, Luo Zheng saw a team carrying back ten or so wounded, and one ran to Hook with a pained expression, saying something.
Hook instructed them to evacuate with the wounded immediately and then said to Luo Zheng, "It was a wolf pack, along with over thirty people. The wolves attacked first, and everyone retreated while engaging the enemy, with some getting sniped from a distance. Five were killed, as you saw the wounded." But strangely, this group didn't pursue us further."
"Wolf pack?" Luo Zheng immediately thought of Tang Tian, pondering for a moment before suddenly realizing something. He promptly said, "It should be them. You saw them in the cave last time; they likely mistook us for merely ordinary tribal forces. They definitely didn't expect it to be us, so they just vented for a bit. I reckon they'll react soon. Has everyone in the group retreated?"
"Them?" Hook's face went cold, with a surge of anger as he said, "Those bastards, the group has pulled back. I'll lead people to execute a surprise attack and avenge our brothers."
"No way." Luo Zheng grabbed the angry Hook, seeing him look over with suspicion. Luo Zheng explained bitterly, "Revenge must be had, but not now. Our main force isn't safe yet, and the terrain here is unfavorable to us. I'm certain they'll pursue us. Are you worried there won't be a chance for revenge when that happens?"
"Alright, I'll listen to you." Hook calmed down, eyes cold as he looked toward the woods, asking, "What should we do next? Should we execute an ambush here?"
"Since they haven't realized it's us yet, they won't pursue. We should take the opportunity to retreat. Let's go." Luo Zheng said, pulling Hook with him. Inside, he wanted nothing more than to ambush, having been chased by Tang Tian with a simmering fire in him, but reason told Luo Zheng not to act rashly.
Hook agreed and ordered the group to retreat. Luo Zheng quickly told his men, "Mine the area, one minute."
"Understood." Ghost Hand, Mountain Eagle, and others swiftly took button bombs from their backpacks and mined the area. They were very adept at using these button bombs. Place them along the inevitable path of the enemy, cover them with a few leaves, or sprinkle some loose soil. Activate the pressure trigger, and it's done—no need to dig pits or lay wires like grenades.
A minute was enough to plant three button bombs each, totaling twenty-four bombs for eight people. Luo Zheng estimated the time up and felt something approaching from the woods ahead, immediately whispering a warning. The team quickly retreated and soon vanished into the woods ahead.
A few minutes later, a dozen wild wolves emerged from the forest, strolling leisurely forward as if inspecting their backyard garden, occasionally howling to summon more wolves. One stepped on a button bomb, completely unaware, and continued strutting forward.
"Boom!" A loud explosion sent this wild wolf flying a great distance, and the wolves within a ten-meter radius were also blasted, falling to the ground, if not dead then paralyzed, wailing in pain. One even worse, landed directly on another button bomb, which exploded under pressure, obliterating this wolf, sending flesh flying.
More explosions followed, killing more wolves. The pack panicked, turning to flee. But animals, being animals, didn't know panicked running meant setting off more bombs. Though, by retracing their steps, they might have been safer, triggering several more button bombs.
In a short time, the ground was littered with dead wolves and more wounded ones, whining on the ground. At this moment, a majestic wolf howled in the forest, filled with endless anger and pride, as many wild wolves suddenly charged up, biting the still howling wolves to death before devouring them.
Soon, a tall, strong, bull-like white wolf emerged from the forest, followed by around thirty people, among them was Tang Tian. Her face was calm as she observed the explosion site, realizing instantly what she missed. Her face turned cold as she crouched to stroke the White Wolf King, coldly saying, "Brother, find them."
"Howl!" The White Wolf King stretched its neck, letting out an angry howl, and countless wild wolves rushed forward in a frenzy.
"Boom boom boom!" More button bombs were stepped on by the wolf pack, exploding with a series of blasts. Two of the men Tang Tian brought were caught in the explosions, thrown the ground, sustaining severe internal injuries, blood spurting from their mouths, unlikely to survive without timely aid.
"Bastards!" Tang Tian watched this scene, her face a patch of ice, angrily shouting, "Pursue."
