Strongest Gangster System

Chapter 51: Surrounded by Gossip

Fredrick had been perfect at everything! And that was why Fredrick also had to be the perfect heir! When Fredrick learned that he would be taking the title from his father, he immediately started to carry himself in a way that would make the people around him see him as someone trustworthy!

Fredrick knew that the members of the family were all ruthless gangsters, and the only thing they really respected was strength, so Fredrick had been putting up his toughest face to make sure none of them had any doubts about whether or not he was fit to lead the family! But the truth of the matter was that Fredrick had been terrified. Killing? Kidnapping? Money laundering? Drugs? Why the fuck would he want to be a part of all these things? The world of gangsters was something that had terrified Fredrick for as long as he could remember. Fredrick just didn't understand the appeal of it, and he didn't understand why anyone would willingly go into that world and try to make a name for themselves as the best of the killers! It was all just so stupid to him! But Fredrick couldn't say something like that in public! He was the son of George Lucas! The son of one of the most ruthless gangsters that the world has ever seen! If he didn't live up to his father's legacy, then he would be spitting on the family name!

But Fredrick had never even killed a man. He had seen many men die in front of him before, but he had never had the balls to pull the trigger and take the life of another man himself. But Dante did. The first time Dante killed a man, he was only fifteen years old. He was nothing but a child, but he had taken the life of a man without even blinking! Fredrick had been there to see the execution, and it had been the most terrifying thing that he had ever seen! Here was someone five years younger than him, and it was so easy for him to kill someone in cold blood!

Fredrick had tried his best not to show the sheer terror he had felt on his face, but after what happened in the reading of the will, Fredrick was certain that his father had somehow picked up on Fredrick's true nature. They say you can lie to everyone else, but your parents would always know who you are. And it was obvious that George Lucas knew exactly who Fredrick was.

'And the old bastard is punishing me for it.'

Fredrick frowned as he looked out the window at the long line of limousines and high-value cars that were making their way towards the Lucas gathering hall. The hall was a large mansion located in the central region of the second district. It was occasionally loaned out to members of high society who wanted to carry out special occasions like weddings or charity dinners, but tonight, it was being used to host all the stakeholders and special investors of Lucas Corp, and it was obvious that they were all here for only one person. The new boss of the Lucas Family, Dante Lucas. But before Dante would be coming, Fredrick had heard that there were some problems that needed to be dealt with first, so Fredrick had been sent to the party to help Dante entertain the guests until he arrived and also to keep an eye on the guests as Dante's eyes and ears. It was a cruel request, and Fredrick had almost laughed when he got the email from Florence earlier telling him about Dante's orders, but he hadn't been surprised. Dante wasn't the sort of person to allow disagreements or tension to stop him from using people however he wanted. Fredrick had trained in how to entertain the stakeholders, and he was the most familiar face that they knew, so it was obvious that Dante would use him as a stand-in until he arrived. But that didn't make it any less cruel.

"Sir, we've arrived."

Fredrick heard the driver in front speak through the screen, and he arranged his suit properly before the door was opened for him, and he stepped out of his limousine. Fredrick was wearing a well-fitted black suit with an expensive Daytona Rosegold Rolex watch worth over two hundred thousand dollars. He was the perfect image of a member of high society, but the moment he stepped out, he could feel various eyes turn in his direction. Even though Fredrick was now in the midst of very high net-worth individuals, that didn't save him from the gossip and rumors, and the moment they all saw him, it was obvious that they would start to whisper about the controversy surrounding him. He was supposed to be the heir, but he was cast aside for his younger brother? How sad. These things were normal for Fredrick, and he easily ignored all of them before he began making his way up the long stairs. The mansion had been elegantly designed, and there was a long red carpet leading up the stairs and into the building. There were also various security men in tailored suits hidden in the shadows to protect the guests, as well as various ushers who helped to guide the attendees forward.

There was no need for a name list or identification at a party like this because if you hadn't been invited to the party, you wouldn't even know about it.

"Hey, is that you, Fredrick? Damn, it's been ages."

A voice called out from behind Fredrick, and he turned around to see a young man coming up the stairs with a woman beside him. Fredrick almost grimaced, but he managed to control his emotions and put on a fake smile as he held his hand out for the man. The man's name was Nigel, and he was one of Fredrick's old classmates from back in the university. Nigel's family ran a popular chain of agricultural produce stores, and they were the sole providers of farm produce to most of the city. Throughout school, Nigel had always stuck to Fredrick like white on rice. No matter where Fredrick went, Nigel always tried to be there as well, and Fredrick always knew that the reason for this was because of his family's wealth. Nigel had been trying to force a friendship between the two of them to make their families closer so that Nigel could benefit from Fredrick's wealth, but Fredrick had always shrugged Nigel off since he was busy with school. Things had gotten so bad that Fredrick eventually told Nigel to stop kissing his ass since he didn't want to be friends with him.

That had been years ago, but from what Fredrick knew about Nigel, there was no way the bastard had forgotten about it. Nigel was the sort of person petty enough to hold a grudge for years if he had to!

"I didn't think I'd be seeing you here, considering everything that's happening and all."

Nigel had a sharp smile on his face as he shook Fredrick's hand, and Fredrick made sure to keep his smile in place as he shook his head.

"My brother asked me for a favour, so it was the least I could do."

"Oh, you mean Dante? The new boss? Things haven't been looking good for the business for a while now, so my father sent me here to judge how the future looks. If I don't see that things will get better, we might just have to think about putting our resources elsewhere. But I'm sure now that Dante is the boss, things will get better, I've always liked him, you know."

Fredrick's eyes narrowed, and a surge of anger rose from deep in his heart when he noticed the smallest hint of a smile on Nigel's face. Fredrick was sure that Nigel was trying to get a rise out of him by saying that Dante would make the family better. Nigel was basically trying to tell Fredrick that he didn't think the family would have grown better under Fredrick's rule, and this irritated Fredrick far more than he thought it would.
