Lunch, right, let's think about food. I scrounged in the fridge but wasn't satisfied. It was sunny outside, and I was sick of my apartment, so I slipped into my sandals, threw my hair in a messy bun and headed down to the taco truck.

Carnitas did the trick, and I stopped in at the market on the way home to re-stock my basics.

Standing in the freezer aisle, I got a bad case of the giggles thinking about a story idea. Moons Dancing wasn't really that funny. It just had moments here and there where I got some outlandishly stupid idea and turned it into a caper for my main character, and I had a new idea for one of those scenes. You guessed it, my inspiration was the poo song.

I realized I was holding frozen bagels and giggling to myself, so I pulled out my pad and pretended I was laughing at a message. Then I gave up and just laughed, 'coz, why not?

"Sam?" I turned around to see Rhoda and Filly pulling sausage biscuits out of a cooler, and I grinned at them waiving.

Rhoda caught my silly mood and started laughing, "What's so funny?"

"Nothing, really. I just get stupid ideas for stuff I want to write and then can't stop laughing which makes it even funnier." I didn't really want to play the poo song in front of Filly since it had so many cuss words in it, and it would make an awesome surprise for Rhoda if I managed to work it into Moons Dancing like Nanna'd suggested.

"Okay, okay, don't tell me. I'm nearly finished with Moons—

"WHAT?" I cut her off. "You've read fifty chapters already?"

"Of course! Why not? It's wonderful, so go home and write fifty more for me."

"HA! You say that like it doesn't make my fingers bleed to type like the wind."

Giggling she nodded at the bagels, "That's your breakfast of choice."

"Really, breakfast is coffee, but I manage to get some starches in on occasion."

"Yeah, IV drip the coffee. Hey, I'm taking Filly to his dad's in a bit, you busy tonight? Up for a girls night?"

"Let's do it; whatever 'it' is. Dinner, please, you pick."

She nodded, "I'll message you as soon as I figure out my day. Great. Glad I ran into you, and keep that smile on your face Sam, you're practically glowing from the inside out."

"Keep talking to me like that Rhoda, and Imma kiss you right here in the market," I winked.

"Lay it on me, honey," she laughed.

I made it home with groceries, excited to have actual plans that night. Opening my Purple Road account, I saw a new notification. smack_pans has reviewed your poem "A Thousand Tiny Deaths." That was one of the Special Streams usernames.

Interesting. I opened the Review and was surprised at its words.

Real

there's life

then there's the real you.

if you want the former

and not the latter

don't read this poem.

Ayela: thx for the review. It's means so much, smack_pans

smak_pans: glad you like it. I wanna show you something.

Ayela: women don't like that sentence as much as men think

smak_pans: Hahahahahahaha! No, here. Link to video of the song, "Cry Wolf"

Ayela: smak_pans! A rock song? This is AWESOME! Is that you singing?

smak_pans: nah, lyrics are mine, but the rest is digital

It seemed to be a day for people sending me amazing digital songs. How were they doing it?

Play "A Thousand Tiny Deaths" by Ayela Arcana

Ayela: I love it! Those vocals are impressive.

smak_pans: I'm glad you like it. Hopefully you'll like this too. Link to video of "A Thousand Tiny Deaths"

Ayela: omg, smak, this is so pretty. I can't believe this is MY poem!! It's exactly what I would've done had I been able to record it. How do you do this? A program of some sort?

No response. Oh well, guess he got busy or something. The song was really pretty, so I saved it to my pad and wondered if I could somehow turn my other poems into music. How did HC and smack_pans do it?

The songs sounded so real, and I played "A Thousand Tiny Deaths" again. Folksy guitars and harmony. Soft and wistful. Everything I would've wanted in a song, and it was simple enough that I could pick it out on Nanna's piano next time I went over.

Alright, time to get back into funny mode. I cranked out two chapters of Moons Dancing. In the first one the main character find herself in a country bar line dancing to the hilarious song "Eat My Poo" and mades the unfortunate decision to try singing karaoke. The next chapter was a little more slice-of-life as she recovered from her bad decisions the next day.

I really, really wanted to knock out another poem so I could get a head start on the contest entries, but I had no fresh ideas.

Fine. I took a quick shower and took the time to gel my hair and dry it into an actual style then pulled on tights and a long sweater.

Yes, it was summer, but if you haven't been to Wyoming in August, then you don't know that once the sun goes down shorts and tees are no longer desireable. Make up? Hmmm. Just a touch. Look at that! I was properly girlie for a night out.

I couldn't help smiling at my reflection. It was such a rare sight to see myself looking put together, and why was that? Because I never had anything important to do.

Oops. That's a bit rude to Nanna, right? Yes, Nanna was incredibly important, but that's different from actually having plans. In a restaurant. With a friend who wanted to see me. It was nice, and I couldn't wait!

Ping!

The notification showed a preview on my pad, and I loved that. Didn't even have to open the messages app. I wished I could get Discord to do that. Maybe there was a setting?

Rhoda: Quincy's On Tap— you've been there, right?

Sam: I'm ready. Excited. Can we go now?

Rhoda: LOL! Yes, I'll meet you in ten

Sam: Perfect! Yippie!

I flipped over to my settings and scrolled through the Discord options. Look at that. Yes, I could get previews of my DMs. Perfect. I set that up then slipped my sandals on and headed out to Quincy's.

Good times. Yes, it was a night for good times.
