Chapter 25: Amon's Offer
A few minutes ago, in one of the rooms of Baron Frascine's mansion.
Count Beaumont sat on his bed while he talked to his sons when he suddenly turned to look at the window. The moment he did that he saw an outline appear and then, a full fledged man.
He wore a plain white mask and looked directly at the count, "One of your people has attacked Lukas Margrave. Both him and his sister are injured and shaken. We are disappointed in you, Count Beaumont."
The count first had a look of confusion, which turned to disbelief before he turned to look at his sons with an expression filled with immense rage as the masked man vanished.
Edmund the eldest looked at his younger brother, as is waiting for an answer while Edward looked pretty confused as he glanced at his father and brother, unable to understand why they were looking at him.
Then, he understood. The people under the count only followed the orders of the count and his two sons. As for why his father blamed him, he also had a small idea but didn't wish to actually believe it.
"Don't act like ignorant." the count said before clicking his tongue, 'I had decided to split everything in my name into half even though you're the second born but you've really disappointed me.'
Then, he left the room hurriedly.
Edward still looked pretty confused but there was also a mixture of helplessness as he looked at his older brother, "But I didn't do it… you believe me right?"
Edmund smiled warmly as he patted his younger brother's shoulder, "Of course. If I don't believe my brother, who will?"
'After all, I was the one who sent that guy. It worked better than I expected. Now father will die faster and I'll get a bigger piece of the pie. I'd say that this is the best outcome.' he thought as he reeled in his joy.
Soon a carriage stopped in front of Lukas' house and the baron rushed into the house that had it's door open. Inside he saw that the magic lamp he had given was turned on.
Then, he noticed the bruises on the faces of the siblings and couldn't help but wince. Both of them seemed to have a broken nose while the sister's upper lip was swollen and was also bleeding.
With a sigh, he ran his hand through his partially bald head as he looked at Lukas who was staring at him with a blank expression.
"It looks like… someone wants you and they're not worried about you hating them. I'm just a regular old baron… I got this title by donating a lot of money to the royal family and thanks to that, I have no experience in wars and nor do I have a decent army. The number of soldiers I have, amount to only fifty. I don't think I'll be able to keep you safe…"
Lukas pressed a thickly folded cloth against his nose and pinched it while withstanding the pain, "I understand… how do I escape this?"
The baron took a deep breath and looked around before speaking.
"First is… to move under someone more powerful. Count Beaumont is an old business friend of mine and he also has a powerful army. He should be able to protect you. Second option is to move to an unknown village that's far from here and never come back. Third option is to move to a different county but this one is risky as there are endless possibilities."
'Endless possibilities…' Lukas thought as he glanced at his sister beside him, 'I would have picked that if I was alone… Unknown people have begun aiming for me in less than a week so there's nothing stopping the same thing from happening in another kingdom. As for disappearing…. unknown village…'
He let out a soft sigh as he shook his head. He didn't wish to go back to a life where there wasn't much luxury. Life in villages was harsh and he knew it thanks to the old Lukas' memories.
"I'll… go under Count Beaumont."
The baron nodded as he walked towards the main door, "I'll leave my men here to guard the door outside. I hope you sleep well." he said and closed the door soon after.
Lukas then looked at his sister and couldn't help but feel a strong urge to punch himself.
He took a shaky breath as he leaned back against the chair, "If I trained properly from the start, doing the mana breathing with you for a few hours daily…. maybe we would have had lesser injuries tonight." he said as he looked down at his toes, "I'm sorry…."
Nina said nothing. She silently stared at him for a few seconds before looking away.
Neither of them could sleep after what had happened and this didn't change even after knowing that there were people keeping watch outside.
He didn't know when, but he realised that his shoulder was feeling quite heavy. He turned to see what was going on and saw the top of his sister's head.
'She smells like flowers… oh right, I went ahead and bought perfumes a few days ago.' he thought as he stayed still.
'Now that I think about it… what the fuck does having knight as a job even do? System, show the Knight Job's description.'
[Job - Knight]
When serving under someone else, you receive a +5 stat increase to all stats.
'No wonder I felt nothing when I got this job… it's like having no job if I'm not working under someone. As for the baron… we were more like partners. Man, fuck this shit… I should have checked this sooner.'
Just as he was lost in his thoughts, he saw the main door open. An average looking man walked in wearing a suit similar to the baron. He took out his half top hat and bowed in front of Lukas as he didn't lift his black cane.
"I'm someone who works for the prince. You can call me Amon and I'm here to give you an option which is better than the one you chose by leaps and bounds. You'll get a chance to get stronger, stay away from all the politics for a year at most, keep your sister safe and finally, we'll provide you with anything you might need. Are you willing to listen to my proposal?"
