Chapter 112: Richards Plight
Few minutes earlier...
"I've actually been disrespected a tad bit too much today." Lux proclaimed as he stared down at Richard from the sky.
His broadsword rested flat on his shoulder, and he smiled sinisterly.
"And I will have to redeem my image… So don't fault me as I send you on your way to the afterlife."
Richard's grip over his hammer tightened, his expression within his visor turning solemn.
"It would be in your best interest not to underestimate me…"
"Oh, is that so?" Immediately the words were said, Lux's figure blurred, his weapon cleaving forward.
Richard parried with his hammer, a legendary legacy weapon of his.
Clang!
A resonant hum rang out as both metal weapons collided, the hammer absorbing the impact of the broadsword.
Lux's eyes glinted.
"That weapon of yours… It's quite special."
His weapon, Gram, was an Epic weapon with an evolution function, meaning it had a chance of evolving by a rank, becoming a legendary-grade item.
So naturally, compared to other Epic weapons, Gram was superior. But in this single clash, he instantly felt the vast difference in quality between his foe's weapon and his.
And for the first time, it was his weapon that was inferior.
"Tsk! Tsk! Tsk! Don't tell me these guys have a dungeon that produces legendary drops… Now I want this territory even more!"
Lux's eyes went frenzied as his aura blazed, towering further, his trait of Domination kicking in.
As long as his opponent wasn't drastically superior to him in strength, his Order would feed him the required amount of strength to dominate the battle.
The intricate runes across his armor simmered as his hair danced in the wind, his valiant figure continuing his offense.
Richard frowned as he engaged the Lord. He could feel his opponent's strikes getting heavier, his hands growing numb from each collision.
Richard couldn't let this go on, or else things might get out of hand. So he used an opportunity, pulling his weight, swinging with full force, drawing from every muscle in his body, as he hammered down heavily on Lux.
Lux felt the stifling pressure in the strike and knew it wasn't something he could defend against with a strike of his own.
So instead, he used Gram as a shield, the wide flat part of the blade absorbing the golden hammer head pounding into its surface, hammering the Lord into the ground.
Richard was quick to take fast backward strides. Close combat didn't favor him. The legendary hammer vanished from his grasp.
And an Epic LMG — Holger of Disastrous Rain — appeared.
The weapon glinted as Richard got into a steady rooted stance. Holding the lightweight machine gun properly, he pulled on the trigger mercilessly.
His skill Follow Impact Boost (SSS) flared to life, each bullet bursting forth stronger and fiercer than the last.
Like a merciless rain of disaster, the bullets pounded into Lux's figure. The Lord could only resolve to continue using the sword as a shield, but under the relentless assault his feet dragged through the soil, his figure being pushed backwards, his weapon beginning to heat up due to the forceful continuous impact.
Lux's eyes flared brilliantly as his trait further fed him strength. As the bearer of the Order of Domination, he had to dominate in all aspects!
The newfound strength surged through his being as he forcefully began pushing against the unrelenting pelting rain of assault.
He began to push forward, slowly, one shaky step after the other. His gait slowly grew steady, his speed picked up, his heart pumping hard. War drum-like beating sounds resonated from his chest as his blood flow raced.
His veins bulged, more blood pressure flowing. But who was he? He was a high-level Lord with a constitution well at 498. There was no way his heart would suffer from a heart attack or the high blood pressure would affect him.
Richard, seeing the Lord pushing towards him, didn't hesitate any longer. He activated the true ether form of the gun.
The molten steel-like weapon slowly morphed into a crystalline cold-blue exterior, its glassy skin sparkling as though holding numerous stars in its depths.
He activated the first of the two abilities of the weapon… Raining Stars.
This ability, paired with Richard's Follow Impact Boost (SSS), made him too deadly a force to be reckoned with.
Ominous glowing sparkling stars flowed out from the nozzle. The fire rate of the weapon went crazy, spitting out an estimated 360 rounds in a second.
Thankfully, this ability didn't rely on the mag, or else a single round would have sucked it dry each time, messing with efficiency.
The weapons traveled at subsonic speeds. Each collision against Lux's trusted weapon Gram resulted in a mini celestial explosion.
Not only did the micro stars explode, they left behind deadly tiny black holes that stuck firmly into the sword, sucking on its properties and deteriorating the weapon further.
Lux couldn't hold his ground anymore, much less push further, as each explosion kicked him back.
Cracks spread across the weapon as the mini black holes sucked fervently at it, slowly turning it brittle.
Fortunately for Lux, the ability Raining Stars drank up ether dangerously fast, and Richard had no choice but to call it off when he felt how low his unit of ether had dwindled.
He ceased fire, staring pensively into the dust cloud where Lux was meant to be. He had to know how much damage the Lord had taken.
Hopefully the Lord was on his last legs and he could end this quickly…
But he was wrong. Very wrong.
"Hahahah! I can't thank you enough! Finally Gram has ascended!"
Richard could only hear the gleeful cackle of the Lord but not yet make out his figure from the dust and debris cloud.
But regardless, the voice told him all he needed to know — his foe wasn't down.
His steaming Holger vanished from sight as the legendary hammer landed back into his weary grip.
He stared anxiously, waiting for his foe.
Hahahah!!!
The dusty haze slowly cleared as Lux's figure could be seen standing on the wind, observing his weapon in delight.
He glanced at Richard.
"My weapon needed pressure to advance, and you provided just that… I thank you for this. In appreciation, you get to experience the first strike."
He grabbed the hilt of the broadsword with two hands, turning the edge forward. He slowly raised the blade into the air.
All the hair across Richard's body stood on end. He also had a legendary weapon. He knew how deadly legendary weapons' abilities could be. Actually, if not for the fact that his warhammer's abilities were mainly large-area attack skills — which would be inconvenient as his teammates and his Lord were battling nearby — he would have used it.
He grimaced as he could only watch the weapon of his foe drink ether to its fill. The weapon began to glow an earthy glow as Lux's trait thrummed brighter, feeding him more strength for Domination.
Richard felt the deadly sensation lock onto his body, and he realized there was no dodging this…
Suddenly, two figures that seemed to have sensed his dire predicament landed by his side.
Two captains — Rachel and Frederick.
Rachel's eyes flickered in terror as she told Richard:
"If you face it alone, you die… Even if we face it together, our chances of survival are slim."
Richard swallowed hard. He knew better than to doubt Rachel. She was a Precog, who could see briefly further through the river of time and its endless possibilities.
Frederick by the side smiled.
"That sounds fun."
His tall frame called forth a giant shield from inventory, his ether thrumming as it flowed into the shield.
Lux glanced at the trio below.
"It's official. You all love courting death… Well, I will oblige and send you on your way."
The Lord's gaze glowed violently as he chanted:
"SEVER THE EARTH!"
Following the chant was a heavy downward swing of his weapon. There was no sound, no shockwaves, no unnatural glow of power… But reality responded.
A thin line of severance tore through reality. Richard, Frederick, Rachel — they all stood no chance at all.
Their armors shattered, blood flowed from every corner of their orifices, as the sword strike raged through them, sending their bloodied figures sprawling.
Lux saw this and was pleased. These guys were strong… Too strong compared to ordinary hunters, strong enough to challenge high-class Lords.
Unfortunately, they faced him — a conqueror, a man whose Order fed limitless strength for Domination.
His stat limits meant nothing once his trait was active…
He frowned and sensed something. He turned to a particular direction and grimaced.
"Where the hell is that bitch! She was supposed to keep him busy!"
Seeing his teammate Lana about to die, his sword cleaved heavily, creating a devastatingly large ravine in its wake — and also taking the foe's arm.
