Ch. 140
Chapter 140: Vivian's Change
"Ding-ling-ling——"
After a long hour of waiting, accompanied by a sharp ringing, the four-hour written exam finally came to an end.
"Finally over—"
After putting away her exam materials, Janna left the classroom amidst the urging caws of the Rooks.
"Janna——"
Just as Janna stepped out of the classroom, a clear voice echoed from the hallway to her right.
"I missed you so much!"
With a running start, Vivian, who hadn't seen Janna in a long time, leapt forward and hugged her tightly.
"Judging by how happy you are, I guess you did well on the exam."
Feeling the overwhelming joy radiating from Vivian, a genuine smile spread across Janna’s face.
"Passing shouldn’t be a problem—thanks to your notes, of course—but don’t expect a high score..."
The two had been apart for nearly three months. Now, upon seeing Vivian again, Janna clearly noticed some changes in her.
The once light golden hair was now threaded with a few strands of frost-like white.
The baby fat on her doll-like face had also faded over the past few months, replaced by a leaner and more delicate pale complexion.
"These past few months must’ve been tough on you———"
Janna helped straighten Vivian’s turned-up collar.
Seeing the dark circles under her eyes from lack of rest, her smile grew even softer.
"But—keep it up."
Hearing this unexpected "comfort" from Janna, Vivian couldn’t help but pout.
"Shouldn’t you be praising me right now? I’m the second one in our class to break through to Second Tier Apprentice!"
"I’ll praise you once you earn a spot in the White Tower Trial——and I’ll even give you a gift."
"A gift? What kind of gift?"
Hearing that stingy Janna was actually planning to give her a gift, Vivian’s previously gloomy expression lit up with surprise.
"Secret."
"Che~~"
Since they still had two more apprentice practical exams in the afternoon, Janna and Vivian only had a few hurried bites in the cafeteria before heading early to the Defense Against Dark Magic classroom on the second floor of the Magic Tower to wait for the test.
The first exam was the evaluation test for the [Defense Against Dark Magic] course, focusing on assessing an apprentice’s Magic Power level, Spirit Power level, and Talent level, and then combining it with their usual class performance to produce a final score—
That would be their semester grade for the Defense Against Dark Magic course.
Ultimately, the [Defense Against Dark Magic] exam evaluated how apprentices performed in battles and how diligently they practiced meditation afterward.
The second exam was the witchcraft assessment for the [Basic Spellcasting] course.
The assessment was divided into two categories: one for First Tier Wizard Apprentices, and another for Second Tier Wizard Apprentices.
Each group was evaluated separately, and the spells they chose were also categorized based on their level.
Although this increased the difficulty for Second Tier Wizard Apprentices, their starting scores were also higher than those of First Tier Apprentices.
As long as their performance wasn’t too poor, there had never been a case where a first-year who advanced to Second Tier Wizard Apprentice had failed the course or been held back.
"Hopefully I don’t get Mental Control Witchcraft—I’m really bad at it."
Due to missing classes, even with Janna’s notes, Vivian struggled with spells like [Magic Reading] and [Mental Perception]. Her strong preference for the Shaping Spell branch made her extremely biased in her studies.
"You can’t do that. Real wizard combat doesn’t care about your weaknesses———"
"Okay okay, I get it, dear Teacher Janna. I’ll definitely make up for it later, don’t worry—besides, I’m not like you, some all-around monster with no weaknesses—"
Vivian’s voice trailed off the more she spoke. Hearing her complaint, Janna simply shook her head helplessly, holding back more advice.
After all, Vivian was different from her. Aside from her "money power," Vivian wasn’t particularly outstanding. Take Wizard Talents for example—Vivian’s initial [Freezing] talent was only at C-level.
If it hadn’t been for the Rose Family spending a fortune to buy a top-tier magical food from Mary Margaret to enhance her talent aptitude, Vivian might not have broken through to Second Tier Wizard Apprentice by now—let alone participate in the White Tower Trial.
That was exactly why Janna often pushed Vivian to stay motivated, and also played the role of a psychological counselor when she was feeling down, fully using the effect of her [Voice of the Heavens] talent to help her regain confidence.
Fortunately, Vivian was diligent too.
Although Janna didn’t know what Vivian had gone through these past three months, judging by the results, becoming the second in their class after Janna to be promoted to Second Tier Wizard Apprentice was enough to show she was keeping pace.
"Janna, did you know——"
Hearing the voice in her ear, Janna, who had been somewhat distracted, refocused her attention.
"These past three months, I’ve been very, very, very, very——tired. But just thinking about going to Dordogne with you——no matter how hard it is, I can endure it."
While saying this, Vivian didn’t look at Janna, but Janna could hear the unyielding determination in her voice.
"So I told my family, this time, I’m definitely passing the White Tower Trial! If I don’t pass, I won’t ask them for allowance anymore!"
"You——maybe you should think that over again—"
Hearing Vivian make such a bold declaration, even Janna felt a bit anxious for her.
"Don’t worry, I’m not that stupid. The only reason I said that was to force them into a betting contract with me—thanks to that, I get access to resources even official wizards can’t enjoy—"
After hearing Vivian’s explanation, Janna’s worry instantly vanished.
If those were resources even official wizards didn’t get, converting them into Gold Surrel coins would be worth several upper-grade coins at least.
Not to mention, she was enjoying such resources at the apprentice level.
"Why can’t there be one more rich person like me in this world——"
Thinking this, Janna couldn’t help but shift her gaze from Turin to the entire Wizard World.
Even in a place full of Third Tier Wizards, an apprentice with only a C-level starting talent could enjoy such resources.
And those born in Rome, with top-tier talents and nurtured with equally elite resources—the gap accumulated over time was simply unimaginable——
