Chapter 13: Time
The knight quickly jumped to the top of the tall building and ran to find out the location of the person.
Valery, approached her friend and clasped her hand on her shoulder. Reminding her that she was here and that she was not alone.
"She must not have much time left... what if she's already gone? Valery."
"No... I'm sure she's still waiting for you. We still have time."
Valery bent down and embraced her friend, even if it was almost imperceptible she could feel her friend's trembling.
Worry and fear were present in the small reactions of her body.
The knight returned and knelt in front of them.
"Please come with me, I will take you to Lissandra's residence" said the knight carefully and nervously.
Without another word Valery and Katerin accompanied the knight.
Entering the building in the shape of a circle, which is quite large, it has so many rooms that it is unbelievable that in a building that seems so small it can hold so many people.
"Does this building comply with the regulations?" asked Katerin with narrowed eyes.
"Yes, in the surrounding area there are four interconnected buildings of this style, allowing enough space for everyone to live. Right now we are in the area where the rooms are only for one individual."
"I understand, tell me more about this place."
"This farm is regulated by the Human Farms Association. It is not a large farm but it has about 2000 inhabitants of all ages. The number has been decreasing recently..."
"It is decreasing, why?"
"Currently the older generation has started to die off and the humans have barely reproduced. But there are enough births so we don't have to take drastic or extreme measures. They have been allowed lighted areas and many benefits that they can't complain about, from studies to an equal diet for each and every one".
Katerin's face became happy and at the same time a little bitter.
The knight did not know if what he was saying would please this noble girl, but he had told it like it was, and if any of it was wrong it would be his neck that would be running on the floor. The knight shuddered at the thought, he did not want to die, he was actually afraid of death. He regretted a hundred times to offer himself as the lair of this farm.
"Lissandra is alive?"
Yes, of course. She is, she is, you don't have to worry about her health and diet, we have the staff ready to fulfill all your needs" said the gentleman hurriedly, hurrying his steps.
They arrived at a room with the number 14.
"Wait for me here Valery"
Katerin approached the door, a few meters to her right was Valery and the gentleman. Katerin raised her hand trembling and afraid, she gave three strong but measured blows.
Without response she knocked on the door again, then opened the door to a soft but old voice that gave permission to enter.
Katerin opened the door, which was unlocked. Look at the small room. It looked like a simple hotel room. A bathroom, a closet in the hallway and at the end of that short hallway a bed with some extra but equally small furniture.
Lighting a candle, Katerin entered the room. The candle illuminated the room as if it were an extremely powerful light.
On the bed a woman with wrinkled, white hair, her skin worn and stretched. She looked so weak that a simple wind could snap her like an old branch in a tornado. Covered with a thick blanket to keep out the cold, the bed was not large but it was perfect for her size.
The weak eyes almost seemed unable to see, after so many years.
"My child..." whispered Katerin to the 86 year old woman.
The woman did not hear her, but with her weakened frame she forced herself to stand up to show respect to the vampire in front of her.
"No, don't get up," Katerin said, moving quickly to her side and helping her to lie down again.
The old woman could see her in a better light now, her eyes widened in surprise and disbelief. The sight of the woman in front of her, her hair her eyes the shape of her face the softness of her hands.
The old woman whispered
"Mom?"
"Yes," Katerin said shakily, stroking her little girl's hair.
The child she cared for in her junior year when she was 17, an accident when she found a little girl in the forest at only 2 years old. Katernin who took her away and hid her in her room shared with Valery at the time.
Katerin tried hard to take care of her as well as Valery, but who tried harder, who had more time with her and much more was her. Until one day she had to leave the academy, she could have taken her home, but she did not.
She regrets it, she regrets it with all her heart. Seeing her so weak, so bad... so old... so close to death breaks his heart. Her child is half a step away from death.
"Forgive me... for leaving you here..." She said with pain and her voice trembling, she stroked her hair and turned off the candle light so as not to damage her little girl's sight any more.
" Mom..." so weak that she could not say anything she could only say these two words.
"My child, Mommy will take you to her this time... you just have to resist the change" She said the last words in a whisper, opened his finger and drops of his blood came out of his finger.
She placed it on the woman's dry lips where the blood flowed into the old woman's body.
Hours passed in the hallway and Valery waited outside, not hearing what was going on inside the room. But he could think of an idea.
Katerin was turning her into a vampire, thus making her part of her own family.
Katerin left the room, her hands trembling as tears of blood trickled from her own eyes. Pain was the only pain in her eyes.
"Late I am very late ...." Said Katerin lying down on her friend's chest, her tears smeared on Valery's white shirt.
Valery hugged Katerin tighter, she was in pain too. She would never again see that spoiled child who had a personality similar to that of her adoptive mother, Katerin.
"She, if she was younger she would have made it, just a minute more seriously I saw how she clung to life, just a little bit... just a little bit, I failed her..." Katerin cried more and more.
Valery had no words of consolation, only her support and sympathy. She too had lost someone, Vlaery had lost her parents, she could understand her.
But it's not the same, a father to a daughter...
Death is terrifying.
