Siblings with No Life Get Summoned to Another World as Detectives

Chapter 73: Memories Of A Maid (Part 1)

Twenty years ago.

In one of the orphanages in the capital city of the Empire, a letter arrived — sent by none other than the President himself, Vorenhart.

In the letter, Vorenhart addressed the elders, saying that he was looking for new servants and would personally come to see if any of the children met the necessary qualities.

He didn't specify the exact date, but the elders assumed the President would arrive in a few days. They immediately began preparing their most diligent children, hoping to impress President Vorenhart and perhaps receive some financial support.

The elders entered the classroom where the children were playing. Some tossed a ball, some drew, and others read quietly. Among them were not only human children, but also Elves and young Neko kids.

One of the elders — a man in his early thirties — raised the letter high for everyone to see. "Alright, everyone… I've got something to tell you. We received a letter from the President!" he announced.

As soon as the children heard the word President, they jumped to their feet and ran toward him to get a closer look. Their eyes sparkled with curiosity.

"WOOOW!" the children exclaimed all at once.

A second elder, an older Neko woman, stepped forward beside the man. "In his letter, he said he'll be taking a few of you to work for him — which is a great honor," she said with a smile.

The children's eyes widened even more, curiosity turning into excitement. "Really?" some of them asked, while others shouted, "Can I go?!"

"Now, now, calm down…" said the third elder — an Elf, easily over a hundred years old. "The President will personally choose who goes. So… we'll train you first and then assign you points."

"We'll take a few of you with the highest points, and the President will make the final decision," the man continued.

"That means everyone has a chance to prove themselves!" the Neko woman added cheerfully.

"You can go back to playing now — the training starts tomorrow," said the Elf, and the children scattered back to their games.

Well… almost all of them. One little girl remained standing in front of the elders. She was around ten years old, a bit shorter than average, with long pink hair flowing down her back.

She fidgeted nervously, trying to meet their eyes, but every time she did, she quickly looked away.

Her tiny fingers clutched the edge of her small white skirt as she tried to form a sentence. "I… uh… can… um…" she stammered.

The man knelt down to her level. "What is it, Lily?" he asked, gently taking her hand.

Lily blushed softly and turned her head aside. "C-can I… um… go too?" she asked, her voice trembling.

The man smiled. "If you give it your all — of course. As long as you earn enough points, you'll be able to."

"Really?" Lily asked, her eyes lighting up.

He patted her head affectionately. "Go play now…" he said, standing back up.

Lily ran off to join the others, and the elders stood together again. "Do you think she'll make it?" the Neko woman asked softly.

"I'm not sure…" the man said with a faint sigh.

The next day, training began.

The elders divided the children into two groups — boys as butlers and girls as maids.

They wanted to test their steadiness, obedience, and how well they could handle household chores.

For the first test, each was given a tray with a few full glasses. All they had to do was carry the tray to a nearby table and set it down. It was only a few meters away.

Lily stepped forward and took her tray. "I can do this… I can do this…" she whispered to herself, walking carefully toward the table, balancing the tray with one hand.

"I have to make it… If the President picks me, then finally… finally my life will have meaning!" she thought as the tray wobbled slightly with every shaky step she took.

"Just a bit more… the table's right there…" Lily thought, her small legs trembling as she drew closer.

But just as she began to lower her arm, the tray tilted strangely and slipped from her hand. "No!" she cried, trying to catch it — but it was too late. Every glass fell and shattered across the floor.

Lily's eyes darted to the elders. The man gave her a thumbs-up, the Neko woman smiled softly… but the Elf only shook his head slowly.

Lily looked down, her shoulders slumping as a hot flush spread across her cheeks. She sank into a chair, biting her lip to stop the tremor in her voice. "It's… okay…" she whispered shakily, though the words sounded hollow even to her own ears.

"I'll… I'll get a good score on the next test…" Her hands twisted in her lap, a mix of frustration and disappointment gnawing at her chest.

The next test was obedience. All they had to do was bring the correct shape when asked. The elder would name a shape, and the child would have to fetch the right one.

When it was Lily's turn, she stood in front of the Neko woman, determined to bring whatever shape was requested. "I can do this, I can do this!" she told herself.

"Bring me a pentagon," the woman said with a kind smile.

"P-pentagon… right away!" Lily stammered, spinning around and hurrying toward the table with shapes.

"Okay… pentagon, pentagon… I can do this… Mom, I'll make you proud — wherever you are, just watch me! Pentagon… I have to do it, I have to! I want that job!" she whispered to herself as she ran.

She finally reached the table covered in colorful shapes — and froze, her stomach twisting painfully. "Wait… which one was I supposed to bring?" Panic surged through her chest.

She crouched down, burying her face in her hands, trying desperately to remember. "Which shape was it…?" Her lips quivered, and hot tears started streaming down her cheeks, blurring the bright shapes before her eyes.

"How could I mess this up… ?" she whispered to herself, each word heavy with self-reproach. The tears soaked into the soft, fuzzy carpet beneath her. "Why am I always so stupid…? Why can't I get anything right?!"

There were six shapes total — circle, triangle, cube, square, pentagon, and hexagon.

If she just picked one randomly, she'd have a 16.6% chance of getting it right.

"I think… it was something complicated…" Lily whispered, hesitating between the pentagon and the hexagon. She picked up both, studying them closely, desperately trying to remember what the elder had said.

Now her chances were fifty-fifty. She had to get it right… right?

Lily ran back to the woman, holding one shape out with trembling hands. "H-here you go…" she said softly, offering the hexagon.

The woman sighed. "I'm sorry, but… that's zero points," she said gently.

Lily sniffled, then ran off to a corner, her small body trembling. She sank to the floor, curling into herself and burying her face in her knees. "I… I can't do anything right…" she cried, her voice barely more than a whisper, choked with despair.

"I always, always, always mess everything up…" she sobbed softly, each word dripping with self-blame. She wiped at her streaming nose with a shaking hand, but the tears kept coming, soaking her knees.

"What's wrong, Lily?" the man asked, kneeling beside her.

Lily slowly lifted her head, her small, teary red eyes still somehow sweet and innocent. "I-I can't do this! I can't do anything!" she cried, breaking down again.

The man hugged her and stroked her hair gently. "It's okay… it's okay… I'll try to get you in somehow," he said softly.

"R-really?" Lily asked, her voice trembling.

"Well… I'll try, but I can't promise anything…" he said, still patting her comfortingly. "But you have to score as high as you can on the last test, alright?"

Lily nodded quietly.

While the elder was trying to comfort Lily, their conversation was being eavesdropped on by a boy. When he heard that the elder would propose the girl with 0 points to be chosen, his stomach turned upside down.

He quickly ran outside to his group of friends and told them everything he had overheard.

"I have 150 points, I won't let someone with 0 points take my place!" shouted one of the boys.

"Me neither!" agreed another.

"What should we do?" asked the only girl in that small group.

"I know!" said the boy who had been eavesdropping.

They huddled in a circle and began whispering, devising a cunning plan. Their only task was to make Lily fail the final test.

In the final test, they only needed to clean the classroom as quickly as possible. The elders had scattered clothes, dust, and spilled some water to create a challenge for the children.

Lily clenched her fists, deciding to push herself to the limit, to try to give 200% on this test, which would decide her entire future.

The small group of children decided to take all the cleaning supplies before it was Lily's turn. They took the broom, dustpan, and mop so that Lily wouldn't be able to do anything.

The elders watched from the side as the children took the cleaning supplies. The man wanted to intervene, but the Elf placed a hand on his shoulder.

"We said we wouldn't have favorites…" he said.

"B-but…" the man began, moving the hand off his shoulder.

"No buts, this is how it will be… If you really believe she can succeed, then I'll let her go, but only if she manages to clean without any cleaning supplies…" said the Elf, lowering his hand to hang by his side.

"But…" the man said, but this time he was interrupted by the Neko woman.

"I agree… Favorites always have haters… You should have expected this…" she said.

The man couldn't do anything, he just stood beside them and let the children take all of Lily's cleaning supplies.

Finally, it was Lily's turn to start her test. She entered the room, and the door closed behind her.

She took a deep breath and looked at the wall where the broom and dustpan should have been, but they weren't there.

She blinked a few times and then looked around, but still nothing was there. She began walking around the room searching for them. Slowly, she began to panic.

"What now?" she asked in a slightly scared voice. "It's probably just a mistake…" she thought, running to the door and preparing to knock, but then stopped.

"Wait…" she said. "Maybe this is the test, maybe they want to see how I'll clean the room using only my hands," she looked at her palms and swallowed hard.

"I can do this!" she said, throwing herself into the task.

First, she did the easiest task, piling the laundry into neat and tidy stacks, trying to balance between perfection and speed.

But then she encountered her first problem: small puddles of water. She had no way to wipe them, but then she looked at her skirt. "I could…" she said, kneeling on the floor and wiping the water with the inside of her skirt.

After wiping up the puddles, she stood on her feet. "Phew…" she said, looking at all the dust around her.

The larger piles of dust were easy; she just took a book and used it like a dustpan. With her hand, she moved the larger dust piles onto the book cover and threw them into the trash can.

"How will I clean this remaining dust…?" she asked, slightly panicking as she looked at the fine dust she couldn't clean with the book or her hand.

She gripped the edge of her skirt so tightly that knuckles of her hand turned white. "I-I must! I-I must succeed!" she said, gathering her strength.

"Whatever I have to do, I'll do it!" she said, coming up with an idea.

She knelt on the floor in front of the dust and then took a deep breath. "Everything will pay off… In the end," she said, lowering her head to the floor.

She swallowed hard, then stuck out her tongue.

"I MUST CLEAN THE FLOOR!!!"

She yelled, putting her tongue on the floor. All the dust stuck to her tongue, and then she lifted her head and swallowed the dust. It tasted so awful that she almost vomited.

The urge to vomit came to her mouth; she was about to spit, but then she thought. "If I vomit, I'll have to clean it up…" she thought, and somehow swallowed the vomit.

She placed her hand on the floor to steady herself. Her breathing was fast as tears ran down her face. "I-I can do this…" she said, then bent her head down again to finish cleaning.

She continued to lick and wipe, cleaning the dust. "I can do this!" she repeated to herself, trying to clean as fast as she could. When she finally saw that there was no more dust, she sat down and sighed.

"The job is…" she paused, swallowing saliva to try to wash away the taste of the floor, and then continued. "Done…"
