Siblings with No Life Get Summoned to Another World as Detectives

Chapter 64: Bug with the Lantern

Upstairs in the White House, in their shared room, Kai, a fifteen-year-old boy, was lying on the bed, flipping through the pages of a book he had started reading yesterday, when he suddenly decided to speak.

"It's time!" he said, looking at his sister.

Mei, an eighteen-year-old girl, was sitting on the floor, drawing in her sketchbook. She was drawing her favorite anime characters. At her brother's voice, she slowly turned her head.

Their eyes met, and in that single moment, they spoke more than a thousand words only they could understand.

Mei stood up from the floor, picked up her sketchbook and pencil, and then headed for the door.

Her brother was right behind her, walking slowly. He scratched his head, then gestured to Mei that she could open the door.

The sister opened the door and stepped out of the room, moving toward the stairs. "Come on, come on!" she said hurriedly, urging Kai.

"I'm coming, I'm coming..." Kai replied lazily, contrasting with his sister's enthusiasm. He approached the stairs, lowering his first step.

Kai and Mei soon descended the stairs and exited the White House.

The weather outside was clear, and the Sun was high in the sky, illuminating Kai's and Mei's brown hair, casting tiny sparks in their eyes.

They turned toward the forest and started walking. As they walked, Mei bounced uncharacteristically, a cheerful smile on her face. "Come on, little bro!" she shouted.

Kai walked at his own pace, not rushing. His hands were tucked in his pockets, shoulders slightly leaned back. "Just go ahead... I'll catch up..." Kai said, disinterestedly.

Though Kai spoke in a disinterested and, on top of that, blunt tone, it did not ruin his sister's mood, which made him wonder, "Why is she so happy?"

It took them a few minutes, but they finally reached a small clearing, where they sat down.

"We even got here early..." Kai said, lying on the ground. The feel of the grass under his fingers was like forbidden fruit. It was so pleasant. So soft. So beautiful.

Mei lifted her head and gazed at the clouds, trying to find any shape in them. "What would you like to do after this?" she asked, failing to spot any shape familiar to her in the blue sky.

"To read a book..." Kai said, amazed at how he could enjoy waiting.

They waited for a while when suddenly a large ball of darkness appeared in front of them. It slowly approached, looking like a large 3D shadow.

Kai stood up and stretched lazily. "Finally, it's here..." he said, lowering his arms to hang by his sides. He looked at his sister, who was still lying on the green grass, then reached out his hand to her.

Mei grabbed his hand and stood up. "Come on, come on, little one!" she exclaimed, addressing the dark ball slowly approaching them.

The 3D shadow reached them and then stopped.

Kai approached it and thrust his hand into the darkness, trying to feel anything that might be there. He felt a smooth but firm surface, then pulled back his hand. "You've arrived?" he asked.

The shadow didn't move, but it decided to respond. "I have arrived..."

Mei's lips curved into a soft, almost dreamy smile, fascinated by the sight before her. Slowly, she reached out and took his hand, her fingers weaving delicately between his.

A shiver of anticipation ran through her as she gave a small, encouraging tug, stepping forward with careful grace.

Kai remained frozen, his gaze fixed on her with a mix of surprise and exasperation. "Let go of me…" he muttered, his voice low but tinged with a softness he didn't even realize he carried.

He watched, almost helplessly, as Mei tried to coax him forward, her hand warm and persistent, guiding him gently toward the White House.

Mei lowered her head just slightly, a soft sigh escaping her lips. Her big eyes looked up at Kai, filled with a quiet, almost aching disappointment.

"Why…?" she murmured, she drew her lips into a delicate pout, the corners of her mouth straightening into that irresistibly sulky line

Kai let out a soft, resigned sigh, the corners of his mouth twitching as he fought back a small grin. "Alright… But… don't intertwine your fingers over mine," he said.

"Okay!" Mei chirped, her voice bright and childlike. Her pout vanished, replaced by a radiant smile.

They held hands, and Kai turned to the shadow again. "Follow us..." he said before turning and following his sister, who was pulling him along by the hand.

After a short walk, they arrived back at the White House. They opened the door and stepped inside, along with the ball of darkness that followed them.

Lily stood with her hands delicately clasped in front of her, the soft fabric of her skirt brushing against her thighs. A gentle smile played on her lips, but the shadow made her heart skip, and her expression wavered.

She instinctively took a small step back, and the movement caused the hem of her skirt to lift just a little, revealing the delicate lace of her panties.

"W-what is that?" she asked nervously, fingers clutching the edge of her skirt as her legs trembled. Her chest heaved slightly with each breath, pressing enticingly against the snug fabric of her uniform.

Her body tensed, yet there was a subtle sway in her hips as she shifted from one foot to the other, the uniform barely containing her curves.

Kai turned to the shadow, then glanced back at Lily. "This?" he asked, pointing at the dark ball.

Mei looked at the shadow. "Now you can turn off that light..." she said.

Suddenly, the dark ball began to lose its darkness, slowly revealing what was beneath. A small, grotesque head peeked out, with tiny, glinting eyes that seemed almost too intelligent for its insectoid form.

Six spindly legs, three on each side, trembled slightly as they bore the weight of its grotesquely large, shield-shaped body, pale green like a sickly leaf.

Its exoskeleton was slick and glimmered faintly, covered in tiny, bristly hairs that bristled as it moved.

From the center of its back hung a lantern-like structure, not glowing, but oozing darkness, a black, viscous shadow that seemed to pull the surrounding light into itself.

"Bug with a Lantern..." Kai said, pointing at the stink bug.

"Calamity?" Lily asked uncertainly, shifting her legs. Each tiny movement made her skirt lift just a little more, teasingly revealing the soft curve of her thighs and the delicate lace of her white underwear beneath.

Mei nodded. "He's our new friend!" she exclaimed, then headed toward the stairs. "Come on, little one..." she said, trying to lead the pony-sized stink bug to their room.

Kai watched Mei lead their new 'friend' to their shared room, then glanced at Lily's still anxious face. "We'll be upstairs..." he said, then followed his sister.

Mei opened the door and let the pony-sized bug enter before her, like a true gentleman. "After you..." she said in a gentle voice.

The stink bug tried to enter through the door but couldn't. It was too wide to fit through the doorframe.

Mei blinked a few times, then went behind the bug and began pushing it from behind. "Come on... Come on!" she said, groaning as she tried to push the bug inside.

Kai arrived and stared at them. "You know... We could have this conversation here too..." he said.

Mei lifted her hands from the bug and stepped back. "Yes... Yes, we could do it here too..." she said, looking at her brother.

"Well—" Kai started, then stopped when he saw the bug start to tremble. "Looks like it's time..." he said, continuing to watch the bug.

The Bug with a Lantern suddenly laid an egg. It was a green egg the size of a basketball, but as soon as it hit the ground, the bug broke it with its foot, killing the newborn instantly.

"Why did you do that?" Mei asked, confused.

"So it wouldn't kill you..." the bug said, turning its small green head toward Mei.

"So your babies eat meat...?" Kai asked, then paused to think. "What about you?"

The bug glanced at Kai and then replied, "I eat only plants... Only the young eat meat..."

"If you are the only one of your kind... how do you lay them?" Mei asked, kneeling beside the bug. "And how often...?"

"Every few hours..." the bug said, with a marked sadness in its voice, looking at the floor.

Kai approached the bug and knelt before it, mimicking his sister, placing his hand on its head. "We know what you're looking for..." he began gently. "But we'll help you on the condition that you help us..." Kai said.

The bug looked at him, searching for sincerity in his eyes. "Do you promise?" it asked.

Kai and Mei smiled. But it wasn't an innocent smile — there was a sharp, almost predatory glint in their eyes, their lips curling in a way that sent a shiver down the spine. "We promise!" they exclaimed.
