Siblings with No Life Get Summoned to Another World as Detectives

Chapter 51: Lovebirds

"Humans really are creatures fascinating, they aren't?" Kai's Shadow murmured, his voice barely more than a whisper as he perched high upon a gnarled, ancient tree.

From his vantage point, the people below seemed like tiny, scurrying insects, oblivious to the decay surrounding them.

"They are… They really are…" the figure beside him replied, their tone soft, almost resigned. "My time has come…" the person said, then prepared to jump down from the tree.

The Shadow's eyes fixed on the figure beside him. "Wait!" he said, his voice cutting through the quiet rustle of the ruined city below. "If you truly intend to pursue revenge, go to the secret room then, in the White House, and the talisman take."

The person sitting next to him stiffened, a flicker of curiosity igniting in their tired eyes. "What talisman?" they asked, their voice low, cautious, yet trembling with a hint of excitement.

"The Talisman of Shadows… It was promised to the first shadow who from the Dream Realm escapes — to me. But—" he shook his head slowly, the faintest trace of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips. "—for such a thing, I have no need…" he answered.

"Alright…" the person said, then jumped down from the tree.

Kai and Mei sat across from each other at the worn wooden table in Yuki's small, sunlit house. The Corona board game was spread out before them.

Kai suddenly raised his hand, eyes narrowing with sudden determination. His finger jabbed toward the bathroom door across the room. "Go to the other room!" he shouted.

Mei bolted toward the bathroom, her feet skidding on the worn wooden floorboards. She slammed the door shut behind her.

But her grand entrance went horribly wrong. Yuki was already in there, singing off-key to the rhythm of the running water, shampoo bubbles stuck in her hair. "What are you doing?!" Yuki yelled, flailing one soapy arm toward the curtain. "Get out! NOW!"

Mei peeked over her shoulder with a mischievous grin, completely unfazed by the frantic flailing behind the shower curtain. "Hi!" she chirped cheerfully. Then, with the utmost nonchalance, she turned her gaze back to the closed bathroom door.

"Can't you see I'm naked?!" Yuki snapped, her face burning red, arms scrambling desperately to cover herself as bubbles clung stubbornly to her hair and shoulders.

Mei glanced over her shoulder again, tilting her head thoughtfully. "I'm a girl, you're a girl. Who cares?" she said, then turned her attention back to the door.

Meanwhile, Kai carefully lifted his king piece, his brow furrowed in intense concentration as he tried to find the perfect spot on the board. Every muscle in his body was tense, every breath measured, like this move would decide the fate of the world.

Then — suddenly — a high-pitched scream shattered the quiet. Mei's voice erupted from the bathroom.

"King to D4!"

Kai's eyes went wide, his jaw dropping. "How the hell do you know that? You're in the other room!" he yelled, flailing in disbelief. With one swift motion he grabbed the entire Corona board, sending pieces clattering in every direction, and slammed it against the wall.

BAM!

At the deafening crash of the board against the wall, Mei casually stepped out of the bathroom, leaving the door wide open. "I know you better than you know yourself!" she shouted. Her grin was practically glowing with smug satisfaction.

Before Kai could even open his mouth to protest, the front door of the cramped little house exploded open with a dramatic slam. Mary appeared in the doorway. "Yahalo!" she cheered, her voice bright and impossibly cheerful, waving both hands in exaggerated greeting.

"Close the damn door, for fuck's sake!" Yuki's voice rang out, sharp and panicked, from behind the bathroom curtain.

Mary turned toward the wide-open door, eyes narrowing as she took in the situation. Then — a wicked, degenerate grin spread across her face, sharp and gleeful. She couldn't resist.

Stepping closer, she leaned just enough to peek inside, and her eyes widened with exaggerated delight as she caught a glimpse of Yuki mid-shower.

"Mary!" Yuki shrieked, her voice cracking with a mix of panic, indignation, and sheer disbelief. She frantically tried to grab the curtain in a vain attempt to preserve some semblance of privacy.

But Mary, utterly unfazed, didn't even flinch. She tilted her head, her degenerate grin widening as she tapped a finger to her lips in mock contemplation.

"Give us… um…" she mused dramatically, pretending to think. "Twenty minutes," she declared finally.

With that, she strolled confidently into the bathroom, ignoring Yuki's sputtering protests entirely, and closed the door behind her with a casual click.

"Mary! Wh-what are you doing?!" Yuki's voice cracked, teetering between panic, disbelief, and a rapidly escalating shade of crimson as her face burned with embarrassment. "Why are you taking off your clothes?"

Mary, grinning like a mischievous imp, took a step closer. "I want to bathe with you!" she announced.

"Nooo!" Yuki screamed. Her hands flailed, bubbles exploded, and her feet slipped slightly on the wet floor as she tried — hopelessly — to fend off Mary's relentless enthusiasm.

Mei glanced at her brother, a sly grin spreading across her face. "Lovebirds…" she whispered, tugging on Kai's sleeve "Let's eavesdrop!"

Kai chuckled, shaking his head, though his eyes sparkled with amusement. "Uh huh," he agreed, matching her energy perfectly.

Together, they crouched low by the door, bodies pressed against the cool wood, ears straining for any sound that might drift out from the bathroom. Kai leaned closer, peering through the tiny keyhole with the exaggerated focus.

"Let me see too!" Mei protested.

"Alright, alright… we'll take turns," Kai replied, holding up his hands in mock surrender.

From behind the bathroom curtain. "Stop it, Mary, they're in the other room, they'll hear us… And I'm not ready!" Yuki's words were muffled slightly by the curtain, but the panicked embarrassment in her tone was unmistakable.

"Just let me show you how it's done…" Mary teased, her voice dripping with mischievous confidence. She leaned forward slightly, a wicked grin tugging at her lips.

"Nooooooo!" Yuki cried, her voice cracking in high-pitched panic. She flailed her arms wildly, water spraying in every direction.

About twenty minutes later, Kai and Mei slumped onto the couch, trying their hardest to look innocent.

Their fingers fidgeted nervously, eyes darting toward the bathroom door every few seconds, while they exchanged subtle, knowing glances that screamed we saw everything.

Yuki finally emerged, her face a bright, incandescent red, legs trembling like jelly. She clutched a towel to herself like a lifeline.

Mary, by contrast, sauntered out with that utterly ridiculous, degenerate grin plastered across her face, a faint hint of smug satisfaction lurking behind it.

Yuki glared at the siblings, shame practically radiating off her. Her face was a deep crimson and her hands clenched the edges of her towel. "You were listening, weren't you?" she asked.

Kai, of course, couldn't resist. He tilted his head slightly, lips pursed, and let out a long, teasing whistle that echoed mockingly through the room.

Mei, ever the instigator, simply turned her head to the side, a smug smirk playing at the corners of her mouth, pretending to be utterly uninterested.

Yuki's face went an even deeper shade of red, if that was somehow possible, and steam seemed to rise off her in protest.

Without another word, she stormed toward her bedroom, each step full of furious energy, and slammed the door so hard the walls practically shook. Kai and Mei exchanged a glance, stifling their laughter

Mary, in complete contrast, sat next to Kai and Mei. "I don't think we've been properly introduced…" she said, extending her hand toward Kai. "I'm Mary Kawasaki. Nice to meet you!"

Kai shook her hand gently. "I'm Kai Kagami." He let go, then his sister grabbed Mary's hand.

"I'm Mei Kagami!" she said — but when she tried to let go, she couldn't.

Mary looked straight into her eyes, voice deceptively innocent. "You won't touch Yuki, will you?"

Mei shook her head. "No… I already have someone…" she muttered, glancing at Kai.

"Good. I'll hold you to that!" Mary replied with a satisfied smile. "I'm going to Yuki now…" she added, heading for the bedroom.

The siblings watched her retreat, her figure disappearing behind the closing door, Mei took a shaky breath, summoning her courage despite the tremor in her voice.

"Why are you lying to me?"

she asked softly, her eyes searching Kai's for any hint of deception. There was a vulnerability in her tone, a subtle plea for honesty that made the air between them feel heavier than it should have.

Kai blinked a few times, forcing a calm expression over the faint tightening in his chest. He leaned slightly closer, locking his gaze onto hers with careful intensity.

"What are you talking about?" he asked, staring straight into her eyes. "I'd never lie to you…" The words sounded sincere, but the shadow of a lie lingered in the way he avoided certain nuances in her question.

Mei studied him for a moment, sensing a strange tension behind his reassurance—but doubt still lingered like a shadow. In the end, she didn't press further; she let it go. "What about that room???" she asked.

"What room…?" Kai muttered, then thought for a moment. "You mean the secret one…?"

"Yeah…" Mei whispered.

"Dunno, maybe it's still there… Want to check…?" Kai asked.

She didn't answer, just walked toward Yuki's bedroom door. Mei knocked, then opened it without waiting.

"Yuki… we need teleportation…" Mei said, trying to keep her voice calm, though the tension in her tone betrayed her impatience.

From under a rumpled blanket, Yuki peeked out, her face still bright red. "I'll be right there… Wait outside!" she called, voice sharp but frazzled, her eyes darting nervously around the room.

Kai, ever oblivious or perhaps just curious, tilted his head and asked bluntly, "Why are you naked?"

"Get out!" Yuki shouted, her cheeks burning hotter, arms flailing wildly as she tried to cover herself with the blanket, which barely did any good.

The siblings stepped out, waiting a second. Then Yuki emerged, fully dressed in just a few seconds.

"That was fast!" Kai said.

"Let's just finish this…" Yuki replied, then paused. "What are you going to do with me?" she asked.

"You mean because we helped you?" Kai asked, before Mei answered.

"Nothing…"

Yuki stared at them, confused — until Kai explained. "Looks like you've already found the love of your life. I don't want to ruin that."

Yuki lowered her gaze. "Thank you…" her face reddening even more.

"Let's go…" Mei said.

Yuki's magic shimmered around them, and in a blink, the siblings found themselves standing amidst the crumbling ruins of the White House. The once-grand building reduced to jagged stone and shattered windows. Yuki gave a quick wave and disappeared.

Kai, ever the prankster even in tense moments, called after her with a cheeky grin, "Don't forget to use protection!"

Mei shot him a sharp look, rolling her eyes. "Who would even use protection? They're both girls!"

"You're right…" Kai smirked and turned toward the ruins of the White House, ready to move forward — but then froze, his grin vanishing instantly.

There, standing before him among the shattered columns and broken walls, was someone he had thought he'd never see again. The sunlight glinted off her hair, and her eyes locked onto his. Right there, in the flesh, was Kitsuna.
