Chapter 46: Neko City
Kai and Mei settled at the small, worn table, the dim light of the safe house casting long shadows across the room. Between them lay the board for a game called Corona, its surface worn smooth from repeated play but still holding the intricate grid that defined its challenges.
Unlike ordinary chess, the game demanded more than strategy — it demanded intuition, misdirection, and a careful reading of your opponent.
Each player had three special pieces, each with unique moves and abilities, which they had to place carefully on the board. The objective was deceptively simple: locate the opponent's pieces while keeping your own hidden.
But the simplicity was a lie; Corona thrived on deception, forcing players to anticipate and manipulate, to think several steps ahead while constantly reevaluating every move.
Mei turned her head while Kai carefully positioned his pieces on the Corona board. Her posture was relaxed, almost disinterested, but her mind was far from idle. She was observing, calculating, sensing patterns in Kai's movements, anticipating his choices even before his hand settled.
As soon as Kai thought he had found the perfect spot for one of his pieces, Mei's voice cut through the quiet room, calm but teasing.
"You put the king on E4…" she said, her tone almost casual, yet there was an edge of certainty that made Kai pause mid-move.
He froze, eyebrows raised, a flicker of surprise crossing his face. "How…?" he muttered, though not aloud enough for her to hear. His eyes narrowed, studying her for any sign of trickery, any hint of how she could have known.
He picked up the piece again, determined to outsmart Mei this time, and moved it with calculated precision to a new square.
But before his hand even fully settled, Mei's voice rang out once more, calm and teasing.
"D3…" she said.
"This is a terrible game…" he grumbled, though they hadn't even started playing it properly yet.
Next to the brother and sister lay Lilith, nicknamed Kitty, sprawled across the floor. Her chestnut hair tumbled in loose waves over her shoulders, brushing against her bare arms as she arched her back deliberately, the black crop top riding just high enough to tease a glimpse of toned, sun-kissed skin beneath.
Every subtle movement emphasized the curve of her waist, the swell of her hips, and the long, smooth line of her legs, bare except for the snug denim shorts that hugged her perfectly.
Her movements were fluid, catlike — an easy arch of her back, a slow stretch of her arms, a playful tilt of her head — yet there were no ears, no tail, just the effortless suggestion of feline elegance in her posture and demeanor.
She rolled onto her side, she propped herself on one elbow, letting her long legs cross and bend in a way that highlighted every curve.
"I'm bored…" Mei grumbled, pushing back her chair and lowering herself to the floor beside Kitty. She leaned close, letting her fingers run through Lilith's soft chestnut hair, stroking the top of her head.
"Do you know where Doggie is?" Mei asked, her tone a mix of curiosity and longing, her hand resting gently on Kitty's back.
Kitty shook her head with a meow. "Meow…"
"I want a pet too…" Mei murmured, moving her hand down Lilith's back, smoothing over her shoulders and the gentle arch of her spine. Kitty purred softly, leaning into the touch.
"I hate this!" Kitty thought, curling slightly as she pretended to purr.
Kai pushed himself up from the chair, running a hand through his hair as he paced slowly around the small room. His tone was flat but tinged with frustration. "Now we're presidents, but what are we even supposed to do…?" he muttered.
He stopped for a moment, staring out the cracked window toward the ruins beyond. "We can't even enter the White House, you know… it's destroyed…"
Suddenly, Lily decided to join them. She pushed the door open with delicate fingers and stepped inside, the soft swish of her short-sleeved maid uniform following her movements.
The fitted dress hugged her waist, the skirt flaring just enough to reveal a hint of her thighs as she moved, and the crisp apron contrasted against the soft curve of her hips, giving her an almost irresistible charm.
"I have something for you…" she said softly, her voice sweet. Her eyes sparkled as she glanced at Kai, who was the only one standing, and slowly approached him.
When she reached him, she held out an envelope with both hands. Her cheeks tinted slightly pink, and she gave a tiny smile.
Kai took the envelope, glancing down at her for a brief moment. Lily's soft hum of satisfaction lingered as she stepped back gracefully.
Kai took the envelope in his hands, turning it over slowly. His eyes immediately caught on a detail — the middle of the envelope bore a wax seal, perfectly round and vibrant orange. Pressed into the wax were the shapes of animal ears — rabbit, cat, and fox — arranged meticulously in a circle.
Kai's brow furrowed slightly as he murmured, "Neko symbol…" With careful fingers, he broke the seal. The envelope opened smoothly, revealing the contents within.
Kai unfolded the letter carefully, scanning the neat, formal handwriting. His eyes moved across the words, taking in both the content and the tone of the message.
"Dear Kai and Mei Kagami,
Congratulations on becoming presidents! I know you must be very busy, but if you could spare even a little time, I would like to discuss state issues and the further development of our interests. I would also like to hear details about the release of the Calamities and how you plan to manage the situation."
Kai's brow furrowed slightly as he skimmed further, noting the carefully measured tone.
"Blah blah blah… More wise words… Prime Minister of the Neko species, Miyuki."
He let out a low, humorless chuckle, glancing at Mei, who was leaning over his shoulder. "Typical formalities… but it seems she actually expects us to act," he murmured, tapping the envelope lightly.
Mei gave a skeptical glance at the letter. "The Prime Minister of the Neko species, huh?"
Kai folded the letter back up, his expression unreadable. Then his eyes flicked toward Lily. "Is the Prime Minister male or female?" he asked, without hesitation.
"Fem—" Lily started, her words trailing off as she realized he had already turned on his heel and begun striding toward the door.
Lily blinked, caught off guard, her mouth opening slightly in surprise. She had expected at least a pause, a moment to respond properly.
"Where are you going, bro?" Mei asked from the floor, fingers still tracing idle patterns across Kitty's back.
Kai didn't even glance back as he slid the door open. "She said as soon as possible, I don't want to be late…" he said smoothly, the words casual, almost businesslike.
But in truth, his mind wasn't on urgency or protocol at all. Every step toward the outside, every flick of his wrist on the doorknob, was fueled by a much simpler, far more selfish desire — to see the cute woman with animal ears.
Kai stepped out of the room, the soft click of the door closing behind him marking the start of their journey. Mei sprang to her feet and hurried to catch up, her expression a mix of curiosity and impatience. "Where are we going?" she asked, jogging to match his pace.
"To the only city where only the Neko species lives—" Kai replied, his tone calm but carrying an unmistakable spark of anticipation.
Hours passed in the gentle sway of the carriage, the rhythmic clatter of wheels against cobblestones the only sound as the landscape slowly transformed.
Finally, the city appeared, rising gracefully from the lush greenery like a jewel amidst the wilderness. Kai's voice rang out, arms spread wide as if to embrace the view. "—Purravale," he announced, his words carrying the weight of revelation.
Before their eyes stretched a breathtaking panorama: fields of emerald grass swaying gently in the breeze, valleys dotted with houses made of warm-colored brick and wood, each building blending seamlessly with the natural landscape. The air seemed fresher here, the sky wider, the sense of life unspoiled and vibrant.
Some called it the Neko Capital, others whispered of Paradise, but to Kai, in that moment, it was simply place with cute animal girls.
"Shall we?" Kai asked, his hand extended with quiet authority, the calm in his voice belying the excitement simmering beneath the surface.
"Of course…" Mei replied softly, placing only the tips of her fingers on his, like a princess. Her touch was light, almost ceremonial, but it carried a subtle warmth that made the moment feel intimate.
Kai gave a faint nod, eyes scanning the horizon for the path ahead, then started walking. Mei fell into step beside him, their pace synchronized, a quiet rhythm forming between them. The carriage behind them trailed off, leaving the siblings alone in the gentle rustle of the grass and the distant hum of the Neko city.
