Chapter 42: Elmyra (PART 2)
Kai and Mei sat on the cold, hard floor, leaning against each other as their eyes followed Elmyra. She, completely absorbed in thought, traced thin lines with her finger in the dusty ground, drawing.
A silence fell. It was broken by a loud sound — Kai's, and then Mei's stomach growled.
Mei flinched, her cheeks suddenly flushed, warmth creeping all the way to her ears. She pulled her knees to her chest, trying to curl up and hide the emptiness in her stomach.
Her skirt rode up far more than she had intended, revealing the soft whiteness of her underwear. The fabric stretched along her skin, tracing the line of her thighs and accentuating their softness.
"I'm hungry…" she murmured softly.
Kai, however, didn't care about her or her underwear. He just sighed and stretched out, lying on the cold ground with arms spread. "Me too…" he said.
A moment of silence passed. Mei was quiet for a few moments, staring at the floor, and then something occurred to her.
"Am I flat-chested?" she asked quietly, almost in a whisper, glancing at her brother for a reaction. Her eyes were slightly sad, tinged with insecurity, and her hands began to fidget with the edge of her skirt, unconsciously betraying her nervousness.
Kai looked up at her, his brows slightly furrowed. "What kind of question is that?" he asked, his voice surprised and a little confused.
Mei took a deep breath, trying to find the right words. "Well… when you came in to give me the comb in the bathroom, when we were at the White House… you said I was flat…" Her tone grew sadder.
Kai felt the weight of her emotions; he didn't even need to use his Core to understand. He sighed deeply, trying to ease the tension. "Sorry… I only said that because you're… perverted…" he muttered.
Mei suddenly jumped up from the floor, her eyes shining with anger and wounded pride. She pointed at him, trembling with rage. "You can't call me perverted just because I was half-naked!" she shouted.
Elmyra watched the whole exchange from her perspective, drawing symbols in the dusty ground in front of her. Her eyes widened unconsciously, and her face turned deep red.
The siblings moved and argued in a way that seemed… strange to her, yet she couldn't look away. Even though she didn't want to, her imagination began weaving their actions into unusual scenarios, leaving her feeling confused and uncomfortable.
"Of course I was half-naked, I was getting ready to bathe!" Mei exclaimed, her voice full of anger. "And you were peeking through the keyhole…"
Kai immediately shot back, raising his eyebrows and muttering through his teeth, "No, I wasn't, but it's obvious you wanted me to!"
Elmyra blushed even more, feeling her cheeks burn. Instinctively, she raised her hands to her head, pressing her palms to her ears, trying to suppress the torrent of thoughts swirling through her mind as she watched Kai and Mei.
"Who would want that, ew!" Mei shouted, feigning disgust.
"Will you be quiet!" Elmyra yelled, jumping in place and kicking up dust that lightly fell on her face.
Kai looked at her calmly. "Go wash up…" he said gently.
Elmyra paused, slowly lowering her hands from her head. Her face began to return to its normal color. She turned and walked toward a stream she could sense in the distance. But then she stopped abruptly, her voice trembling as she quietly wondered, "Why am I listening to them?"
Though she still felt a slight discomfort in her chest, Elmyra reached the stream anyway and dipped her hands into the cold, clear water. Droplets spread across her face and neck as she washed, cooling and calming the thoughts still spinning in her head.
When she returned, she noticed Kai and Mei standing beside her drawings in the dirt, watching them with a mix of curiosity and skepticism. Their gazes met hers.
"What are you doing?" she asked, her voice slightly sharp but tinged with concern.
"Do you think this will work?" she asked, her tone serious, but doubt lingered in her eyes.
Kai immediately began analyzing, leaning over the drawings. "Literally… what have you been doing for half an hour drawing this… Your plan is just for us to act as bait and then you kill Vorenhart…" he said.
Elmyra crouched and pointed at her plan. "Not Vorenhart… First, I'll destroy the altar for summoning Calamities…" she paused. "Then Vorenhart will suffer!"
"Don't kill him right away! He still owes me a wish!" Kai shouted, his voice full of concern.
"I know, but then you better come up with the wish by then!" Elmyra said.
"I know, I know!" Mei exclaimed, trying to sound serious. "Why don't you wish for the Calamities to die?* she asked.
"That won't work…" Elmyra began. "A wish is limited to one being, which means at most you can wish death upon only one Calamity…"
Kai suddenly had a question pop into his mind. His eyebrows rose in curiosity. "Then how does Vorenhart have so much power?" he asked, looking at Elmyra.
Elmyra slowly sat down on the floor, legs folded in a circle in front of her, thinking of a way to explain everything simply, yet accurately enough. "Vorenhart has a Legendary Core, called Negai, which gives him that power…"
Mei tilted her head, curiously staring at Elmyra. "Are there any other Legendary Core…?" she asked.
"Yes… Humans have three Legendary Cores… One I just explained, and two more," Elmyra began, lightly drawing lines in the dirt with her fingers, illustrating an imaginary representation of power.
"Tenshin — manipulation of space and gravity. Grants the user the ability to alter the strength and even direction of gravity.
Kurozume — pure destruction. Gives the user the power to destroy things with a touch.
But every Legendary Core also has a weakness."
"What could Vorenhart's weakness be…?" Kai muttered to himself.
"I know!" Mei shouted, jumping up with excitement. "He didn't let Yuki kill me… It's probably connected to that…" she said.
Suddenly, something clicked in Kai's head. "Ah… Yuki is male… Wait, Yuki is male!" Kai jumped up abruptly and began frantically trying to wipe his tongue with his hands. "Take it off! Take it off!" he shouted.
"What are you doing?" his sister asked, confused.
"I once kissed him… Take it off!" Kai yelled.
Mei made a face that was a mix of jealousy and anger, her cheeks flushed. "And you never kiss me…" she said, turning her head to the side.
Elmyra sighed deeply, clearly a bit frustrated. She got up and grabbed Kai by the arm, pulling him toward the stream. "Come on!" she exclaimed.
"His tongue was in my mouth!" Kai almost began to cry, his face twisted with discomfort and disgust.
Mei, of course, reacted immediately, clearly offended. "Why didn't you ever tell me!?" she shouted. Her anger was mixed with jealousy.
Elmyra dragged Kai to the stream, and he clumsily began splashing water into his mouth, immediately spitting it out with grimaces of disgust. "Yuck!"
Elmyra just shrugged. "You really are a strange brother and sister pair…" she said.
"Nah, Mei has a Brother Complex…" Kai said. His eyes glimmered slightly as he looked at Elmyra.
"You think I didn't notice?" Elmyra asked.
"But… she's still my sister, she's all I have. She's the only one I can trust…" Kai said, wiping his hands on his uniform.
"When did she start acting like that…?" Elmyra asked, her voice tinged with curiosity.
Kai just shrugged, his gaze distant. "No fucking idea…" he said.
Elmyra paused briefly, looking at Kai, but her eyes hid something more. "Do you ever feel like… killing her…?" she asked softly.
Kai smiled. "Believe it or not… I've already killed her once…" Then he chuckled, adding jokingly, "But it seems I can't get rid of her…"
Elmyra tilted her head slightly, her face somehow sad. "You had another chance, huh?" she asked, her voice almost a whisper.
Kai was too absorbed in his thoughts to immediately hear her comment. "What did you say?" he asked.
Elmyra slowly brushed her hair from her face, her hands trembling as she did so, eyes cast downward. "Nothing…"
"Don't flirt!" Mei shouted from the bushes where she'd been spying, and Elmyra immediately blushed, feeling her cheeks burn as she instinctively pulled back.
"Shut up!" she shouted back, her voice cracking slightly as she stomped her foot, cheeks flaming bright red. She crossed her arms stubbornly, refusing to meet Mei's eyes. "I… I'm not—don't—you—ugh!" she sputtered, fumbling for words as her pride waged war against her flustered heart.
"You better calm down, little one!" Mei yelled, her eyes sparkling with a mix of anger and amusement.
Kai just raised his hand and pointed to the sky. "What's that?" he asked, his finger aimed at a red beam of light rising high.
Elmyra looked up and immediately recognized the sign, her face shifting — from anger to worry in just a few moments. "It's already begun…"
