Chapter 54: Well Fuck!
-19 Hours Until Deadline-
Alexander Pierce sat in his office, reflecting on the decisions he had made regarding Leon Uzumaki a few days prior and how they had disastrously backfired. The frequency and precision of the attacks on both SHIELD and HYDRA agents were too consistent to be mere coincidence. The chilling realization that their Continental coins had compromised their positions sent a shiver down his spine.
The pattern of the attacks was unvarying: precise, catastrophic, leaving no survivors or witnesses. This confirmed Pierce's gravest concerns. The Continental was methodically taking apart HYDRA's network of agents, a task that necessitated insider knowledge and considerable power.
Behind his desk, Pierce massaged his temples, feeling the immense pressure of the situation. The loss of several of his most dependable assets for crisis management was a severe setback, occurring at the most inopportune moment. His available mercenaries, though skilled, did not match the efficiency and dependability that his HYDRA agents within SHIELD had offered.
The quiet of the room was interrupted by the soft buzz of his secure phone line. He picked up, listening closely as one of his chief lieutenants relayed news of another strike, this time targeting a HYDRA research facility clandestinely located within a civilian building in Europe.
After the call ended, Pierce reclined in his chair, contemplating potential countermeasures. The lack of rumors about Hydra's existence was a solitary bright spot, hinting that The Continental had no interest in revealing them to the world. Instead, this adversary was systematically wiping them out, a silent executioner working with terrifying precision.
The challenge was without precedent. Encounters with Continental assassins and their augmented operatives were not unusual, but an individual wielding the power to threaten them and possessing intimate knowledge of their SHIELD and HYDRA agent's secret locations was exceedingly rare. Pierce recognized the necessity of devising a strategy to neutralize the threat.
"It's time to serve them Richard Ravencroft, the CIA Director, on a silver platter."
Pierce whispered to himself. He started to assemble a roster of potential collaborators, mercenaries, and even untested assets that could be mobilized against Leon Uzumaki, to halt his manhunt. Each entry on the roster was a risk, yet the stakes were too significant to avoid taking them.
-18 Hours Until Deadline-
Fury had been inundated with work for the past few hours, and the paperwork seemed endless. It was becoming increasingly difficult for SHIELD to handle Xu Wenwu and the 10 Rings who were causing havoc in Asia and Europe.
Despite their efforts to pull everything out of the area, the attacks and destruction continued relentlessly. To make matters worse, the Chinese government had already fallen under Wenwu's influence and was blaming SHIELD for the damage caused.
The change of personnel on the security board made things even more difficult for SHIELD. The new officer was sympathetic to the terrorists and wanted Fury to deal with the situation, but without allowing him to operate in China.
This made Fury's task all the more challenging as he could not send operatives to take down the 10 Rings. The Continental's assassins were also attacking their agents across the world, including in the USA.
Fury was at a loss as to how to deal with the situation and expressed frustration at his inability to take down the 10 Rings without any support. He paused the video he was watching of Wenwu's attack and dismissed the holographic display of the latest attack, only to be alerted that the agents he had summoned were at the door. As he let them in and rose to his feet, Natasha, Clint, Coulson, and Hill entered.
"Coulson, do you have something for me?"
"I just managed to complete it before your summons, sir."
Coulson replied as he placed a USB on the table.
"That was just in time, Coulson."
Fury remarked, taking the USB and transferring the data to his personal computer.
"Sir, you mentioned a situation."
Coulson inquired, aware that Fury must have had a significant reason to recall them so abruptly after dispatching them only the day before.
Without a word, Fury clicked a button, resurrecting the holographic screen and resuming the previously paused video. The footage, captured by a security camera, showed a convoy of black cars forming a blockade outside the building to which the camera was affixed.
Suddenly, a Chinese man clad in black, leather-like armor emerged from a car, accompanied by numerous armed individuals. The truly astonishing moment followed; the man extended his hand toward the building and the camera.
Then, an explosion occurred, the feed cut to black, and then switched to a different angle. As the building was engulfed in flames, the final footage ended, plunging the room into deep silence.
"That was our primary operations center in China,"
Fury declared, confirming the deduction everyone had made from the emblem on the defenders' uniforms. Hill was the first to shatter the quiet that ensued after Fury's announcement.
"How bad is it?"
"Over two thousand confirmed so far. Many more we have lost contact with."
Fury's words cause the grim reality of the situation to set in.
"That's why this is so important."
He said, waving the USB around.
"We need to know what he is capable of and how to deal with him."
"So, we face someone who can neutralize our defenses, stride through gunfire unscathed, and single-handedly destroy a fortified base. Any ideas on how to counter them?"
Clint, always practical, leaned in, scrutinizing the video that looped on the screen.
Natasha nodded gravely, her eyes reflecting the gravity of their predicament.
"While Uzumaki is preoccupied with hunting our agents, Wenwu's actions are driven by the loss of his wife, for which he holds us accountable. His sorrow has morphed into a vendetta against SHIELD, employing his vast power for revenge, trapping us in a dual-front assault."
Hill shifted uneasily, absorbing the weight of Natasha's observations.
"If that's the case, we're not facing sporadic assaults. Wenwu's systematically targeting us. We must uncover the reason he holds us culpable and dispel this belief before the situation worsens."
Natasha interjected analytically.
"Correcting that misconception, assuming we can even get close enough to communicate with him, won't be easy. He's not in a place to listen, especially after what he's done, and The Continental continues to eliminate all our USA agents. Our best bet might be to resolve the issue with Uzumaki before we discover who is behind the attack on his wife and publicly bring them to justice."
Clint frowned, considering the logistics of such an operation.
"As Natasha mentioned, even if we identify the real perpetrators, we can't apprehend them before dealing with The Continental, and proving their guilt to Wenwu's satisfaction will be an enormous challenge. Meanwhile, we'd be under constant threat from their attacks."
Fury stood, his determination solidifying.
"It's an enormous challenge, but it's our duty. We need to begin gathering intelligence to determine who could have orchestrated the attack on his wife and their motives. At the same time, we'll bolster our defenses and do whatever is necessary to safeguard our agents."
Coulson nodded, already contemplating the next steps.
"We can't deploy ground troops, so I'll coordinate with our intel teams to pursue every possible lead. We also need to contact our allies to see if they've encountered anything similar or have information that could assist us."
Hill interjected,
"I'll manage the evacuation of our agents and ensure our defensive protocols are current. We cannot afford further losses."
"Barton, review our intel for anything actionable. Agent Romanoff, your role is crucial now; you must step in for Agent Melinda May as she's given her maternity leave. Once we have a handle on this situation, you'll go undercover in Uzumaki's organization."
Fury proceeded to assign tasks to the remaining team members. Despite wishing for better options, he acknowledged that his initiative, the Avengers, was still in its early stages.
With a decisive nod, Fury concluded.
"Let's get to work. Coulson set up a command center and keep me updated on all developments. Hill, make sure our bases are secure, and our agents are safe. Barton, Romanoff, you know what you have to do. We're all counting on you."
Once alone, Fury reviewed the myriad of problems SHIELD faced, with the Uzumaki situation topping the list. It needed resolution before time ran out. Minutes later, his secure phone line buzzed. He answered, hearing Secretary Alexander Pierce.
"Fury, I've discussed it with the POTUS, and we've agreed to offer Uzumaki a deal to stop the elimination of our agents, especially now with the Mandarin's attacks."
Fury, eyebrow raised, responded.
"I was under the impression that the USA does not negotiate with terrorists, Secretary Pierce."
"Fury, you understand the stakes. We attempted to trap a tiger and missed. Now, we must deal with the fallout."
"Well Fuck!"
