Chapter 25: Vile Words
There was silence for a while after the Sin of Solace uttered the name of the Culprit Cassie had suspected to be behind it all.
And it made them no less sure if they could solve that problem. From what Cassie had told them they knew that the Mad Prince was essentially just Sunny but Corrupted.
A small detail that changed everything.
"Who exactly is he? I mean, Saint Cassia has told us the Little that she knows, but since you have spent so much time with him, who is he exactly?"
A simple question that was no less Important. If one wants to Kill an Enemy, it's best to first get to know Him better. That's exactly what Naeve wanted to achieve by asking. Although he was scared of the Answer.
"The Mad Prince And I have spent Thousands of years together, right. Every time he failed in his Mission to create the perfect run to get out of there, I could feel his mind Crumble and fall deeper into corruption. There is no reasoning with this Madman. There is nothing one can do to stop him."
The Sin of Solace felt his Blood boil while thinking about how many Nights and Days he had to be by the side of this Vile Creature. Nothing was left of the Man named Sunless he had once sworn to himself to hate and show him said hate till his pitiful life found an end.
That was until the Mad Prince emerged out of the Man due to Corruption and he learned what truly hating someone really means.
"As a being that was both Corrupted and still being able to keep a sense of self, due to me, he had all the Power from both sides. The Spell that has forsaken him and the Corruption that was embracing him. When I told you that you will all die, that was not to mock you or throw you off. It's simply a fact."
His voice stayed even and calm. Something they didn't expect from the initial encounter only a couple of Minutes ago.
"We will be the Judges Of our own life. Don't act like we are some helpless Children who will fall over just because you think you Know it all."
Tyris was angry but didn't show it in her facial Features. The only sign of that was her tone that she normally Kept even. What didn't calm her down Though was the laughter of the Sin of Solace.
"You think you can fight that thing? I have one question for every single one of you. Do you think you could Kill Sunless? I'm not asking on a Emotional level. I Mean if you would be capable of doing so physically. I already know the Answer for most of you But go ahead and raise your hand if you think you can pull it off."
Once again there was silence. They all knew what kind of Monster Sunny could be if push came to shove. They knew what he was capable of doing. Some of them better than the others.
In the end only the Saints In the Room lifted their hands. Naturally the Master's and Awakened stood still. Only looking down at the table, Unable to meet the eyes of the Sin of Solace.
"I see, everyone Who has their hands still down can leave to be honest, you are not needed in this discussion about a fight you would be torn to shreds in. Although I would gladly watch that happen."
He Chuckled while turning to the people who raised their hands.
"And you all, you would be keeping your Hands down if you had the same Flaw as that Slave."
They meet his eyes with the same boldness as before. None of them felt like their decision was a lie. Not because they truly believed that they could Kill Sunny in a 1v1 Battle, but because that is not what they are talking about here. The question is not if any of them could Kill him but if they could do so as a Team. Even though they never thought about being forced to do so.
"I thought you were a bit smarter than that. Do you think we will face the Mad Prince one after another? No, we will combine our Strength To ensure that we can take him down."
Jet Said coldly with a slight smile on her lips.
'How strong can a Saint even be? Surely we have a Chance.'
She thought, as if sensing her Train of thoughts the Sin of Solace threw her a smirk.
"You are as stupid as it gets for a Government employee, I know what your plan is and I'm telling you that it doesn't make a difference. You have no Chance against him. Sunless is the only one capable of containing him. You have no idea what you're getting yourself into. He killed some of you in that Nightmare thousand of times already. What do you think will be the difference this time?"
"We are not Corrupted, that's the difference. Our fallen counterparts didn't have a clear mind when fighting him. We do, and therefore, are much more dangerous than what he knows."
The Sin of Solace was about to protest but got interrupted by Nephis.
"You know Kai is right. We are not the same entities the Mad Prince has faced in that Nightmare. He might be powerful and knows much more about our abilities than we would like him to know, but that won't stop us from trying. There must be something we can exploit."
"Alright, let's pretend for a second that you have enough of what it needs to take him down. You are actually lucky, because he doesn't have access to all of his power. You can thank that previous Slave of yours for that."
Hearing him address Sunny that way made Nephis want to strangle him to death. Not that she would be able to do so, she had seen Sunny trying on top of the Black turtle, but she was not above trying it just to let off some Steam.
"Why is that? Why doesn't he have all of his Powers? What did Sunny do?"
Effie asked, hoping to get a bit of hope from the answer the Sin of Solace could provide. The Wraith sighed and started to explain.
"The answer to that question is in how he came back to life. You see, Sunless made a crucial mistake that luckily saved him from a much more cruel fate. Or rather the lack of it. I'm sure your CRIPPLE can answer what I mean exactly."
Everyone focused on Cassie, they all wouldn't say it but it was obvious who he meant. She couldn't hide her nervousness from them. She had shown Nephis their Conversation on the Boat right before Sunny left. But she had never told her what the end Goal Was.
That, she was too ashamed to say. But she didn't have a Choice and the Sin of Solace was patiently waiting for everyone to jump at her throat when she would finally reveal the Plan she had for Sunny.
"I…I can't. You can't make me tell them."
Her voice broke as she Desperately hoped for a way out of the Situation.
"Oh I won't make you do anything. I won't throw you in a pit of Despair to wander through the Hollow Mountains all by yourself because you are so broken you couldn't decide if your life was still worth living."
He chuckled. Noone, not even Cassie knew what was going to happen to Sunny between losing his Fate and gaining it back. She had no visions of him from that time and therefore no way of pondering if it was really worth it.
"What do you know huh? What do you know about what kind of Choices I had to make for the sake of saving Humanity from being consumed by the Cruel fate that awaits us?"
All she had ever done was to try and save them all from what she saw in her Vision years ago. A vision that promised her a future where every single one of her loved ones and the rest of Humanity would be consumed by corruption. But that didn't mean that her actions were justifiable from any given perspective.
That much she knew after making the fatal Mistake of sharing the knowledge of her visions with others one time and that ended in a disaster she was blaming herself for, rightfully so.
"It's ok Cassie, we know you have a lot on your shoulders and Noone to turn to with that burden. Whatever it is that you are scared of sharing with us, it's OK. We could never hate you for something that did not even happen in the end."
Nephis attempt to calm Cassie down helped in the end. She didn't want to share the knowledge about her previous plan but now she had no other way. She took off her Blindfold to prepare herself to wipe away the Tears she was sure to shed and took a deep breath.
"Sunny was supposed to lose his Fate completely. The Cursed Terror that stole Weavers Eye was supposed to tear away his Fate and turn him into the Fateless weapon to break said Fate that we could use to save the world. I know it sounds bad but I made him believe that he would be able to break the Bond between him and Nephis once and for all, which is true. But it wasn't the whole truth. That's why I wrote a note to myself to ensure that I would be able to somewhat remember him even after losing his Fate."
The Sin of Solace laughed after her Confession, but he wasn't satisfied. There was one more thing he wanted her to say which he knew she was ready to fight tooth and nail for if it meant that she would never have to.
"FANTASTIC, HOW WONDERFUL. But you left something out that I think is really important for the subject. Now go ahead and say it, or I do it. And trust me, I will make sure to make it sound as bad as I can."
Gritting her teeth and forming 2 fists until her knuckles turned snow white she accepted defeat and let her head drop before shattering the last piece of hope to never Reveal her plan to anyone.
"If Sunny would have lost his Fate, it would have meant that we would have all Forgotten him completely. He would have been banished from the Nightmare Spell as a result and every trace of his existence would have been cut from the world. We wouldn't even have been able to remember him even if he contacted us. Which I'm sure he would have soon after the Nightmare had ended."
She was crying, tears full of shame dropped on the Table as everyone else tried to digest what she had just revealed.
"Just imagine how lonely such an existence is. How much pain and Sorrow such an experience would inflict on someone. Ahhhh…yes. I wish I would have been there seeing him wander through the Hollow Mountains hoping to find some sense in life or at least die where Noone would ever find him. THAT LADIES AND GENTLEMAN would have been fun."
Again Noone paid the Sin of Solace any attention, which he couldn't care less about right now. Seeing Cassie so utterly defeated and everyone else trying to push the feeling of Disgust out of their heads was perhaps the biggest joy he felt in years. All he had ever dreamed about was seeing other people suffer and today many did and he was here to enjoy the Show.
"What a time to be alive."
He said between laughs that would have driven everyone Crazy in the Room if they weren't too distracted with coming to terms with the things they just heard.
"I think it's better if we move on. You clearly only had in mind to do more damage than you already have. Now tell us what went wrong or rather right so Sunny didn't have to go through all of this."
Nephis wasn't sure of what to think about the Situation. On one hand she knew that Cassie was not a bad person. On the other the reality of how much pain her actions would have caused was no less real only because it didn't happen. In the end though she trusted her dear friend like she had done so for all those years. If anything at all they would only have a brief talk about what she had just revealed to them. But that could wait until this whole mess was over.
The Sin of Solace looked at her and stood up. That was the Moment where it all went South and he was here to Tell them what had happened with a sickening grin on his Face.
"It's simple really, something so Mundane That it shouldn't have affected Such a life Changing event."
He let himself fall backwards onto The Table while Crossing his arms behind his head. With a Smile He looked At everyones confused faces and shrugged.
"He stumbled."
