Chapter 55: When Love Isn't Enough.
As Mister Jenkins walked away, Laura turned to Carlson, her eyes blazing with curiosity. "You are the C.E.O of Sha industries?" She repeated, her voice still barely above a whisper.
Carlson nodded, his smile back in peace. "That's right," he said.
Nina and Dave were stunned, their eyes fixed on Carlson in shock. Dave's jealousy, which had been simmering beneath the surface, suddenly boiled over. He felt like he had been punched in the gut, his mind reeling with implications.
Carlson, the man Laura had been laughing and chatting with, was the C.E.O of Sha industries. It was a company that Dave had been trying to get in with for years, and now it seemed that Laura had a connection to it through Carlson.
Dave felt aware of anger and misfortune washing over him. He couldn't believe that Laura had kept this from him, that she had been secretly dating the C.E.O of Sha industries.
Needing to cook off, Dave excused himself and headed to the restroom. As he splashed water on his face he couldn't shake the feeling of jealousy and betrayal that had taken hold of him.
Dave's mind was racing with questions and doubts. He didn't know what to think or feel anymore.
As he stood there, trying to calm down, Dave couldn't help but wonder if he had made a huge mistake by proposing to Nina. Should he have pursued Laura instead?
The thought sent a pang of guilt through him, and Dave knew he had to get his emotions under control. He took a deep breath, wiped his face dry, and headed back out to the reception.
But as he scanned the room, his eyes locking onto Laura and Carlson laughing together, Dave couldn't shake the feeling that his life was about to get a lot more complicated.
After Carlson and Laura mingled with other guests, they were greeted with food, drinks and music.
As the night wore on, Carlson found himself having more and more fun. He was glad that he had decided to come, and he was grateful to Laura for keeping him.
As they danced to the music, Laura learned and whispered, "You know Carlson, you are not as boring as I thought you were. "
Carlson raised an eyebrow, laughing. "Hey, watch it. I am a fascinating guy."
Laura playfully rolled her eyes. " Sure you are Carlson."
Carlson woke up feeling refreshed and rejuvenated, the memories of the previous night's wedding celebration still fresh in his mind. He couldn't help but smile as he thought about the fun he had, the laughter, the music, and the great company.
As he lay in bed, memories of Laura flashed through his mind. He remembered the way she smiled, the way she laughed and the way she made him feel like he was the only person in the room.
Carlson felt a pang in his chest, and he realized that he had been feeling this way since Rita left. He had been lonely and Laura's company had been a breath of fresh air.
But as he thought about his feelings, Carlson wondered if he was falling in love with Laura, or if it was just the wedding memories they had created together. Was it the romance of the wedding, the music, and the atmosphere that had made him feel this way?
Carlson threw off the covers and got out of bed. Deciding to take a shower to clear his head. As he stood under the warm water, he couldn't shake off the feeling that he had developed strong feelings for Laura.
But what about Rita? He thought he was still in love with her, but now he wasn't so sure. He had been using Rita as an excuse to avoid getting close to anyone else?
Carlson sat in his reading room, surrounded by shelves of books and the warm glow of the morning sun. He was lost in thoughts, still trying to untangle his feelings about Laura and Rita.
Just as he was starting to make sense of his emotions, he heard the sound of footsteps outside the room. The door opened, and Rayan, his personal assistant, walked in.
"Goodmorning, sir," Rayan said, his voice crisp and professional. "I hope you are having a good morning."
Carlson nodded, gesturing for Rayan to take a seat." What brings you here Rayan?" He asked.
Rayan pulled out a folder from his bag and opened it. I just wanted to remind you about your business trip to Jinja town, sir," he said. "It's scheduled for Tuesday. "
Carlson's mind went blank as he tried to remember the details of the trip. He had been so preoccupied with his personal life that he had almost forgotten about the trip.
Yes, "he said finally, trying to sound more confident than he felt. " I remember now. What's the agenda for the trip?"
Rayan handed him the sheet of paper with the itinerary. " You will be meeting with some potential investors for new projects, sir," he explained." And then you will be attending a conference on entrepreneurship.
Carlson scanned the itinerary, his mind starting to focus on the task at hand. He had a lot of work to do before the trip, and he needed to make sure he was prepared.
"Thanks Rayan," he said, looking up at his assistant. " I appreciate the reminder."
Rayan smiled and stood up. No problem sir, I will make sure everything is ready for your trip."
As Rayan left the room, Carlson felt a sense of determination wash over him. He was going to make this trip a success no matter what. And maybe he would be able to clear his head and figure out his feelings about Laura and Rita.
As Carlson sat in his reading room, lost in thought, Rita's name suddenly popped into his head. He felt a pang of guilt and longing, and before he knew it. He had picked up his phone and was failing Rita's number. He waited for what felt like an eternity for Rita to pick up, but the call went straight to voicemail. Carlson tried calling again, but Rita still didn't answer.
Undeterred, Carlson decided to send Rita a text message instead. He typed out a message, telling her about his upcoming business trip to Jinja town and asking if she would like to accompany him.
