Rise of the Omnimage

Chapter 2 - Deep dive

Kyrain filled out the questionnaire. It was your average government questionnaire asking if you had committed crimes, or if you are a terrorist. It asked for parent names, and general path information, which he was all to excited to share.

Ky loved his path and the terror he could be with it. There were guys who would come around trying to show off for his mom thinking that she would be amazed and instantly fall in love with them.

They didn't know that she could see his dad and was waiting for him. She was always sad after seeing him. That changed when he gave her the information from Infiniti about dad for sure coming back.

Ky didn't like dudes coming around flirting with his mom and trying to be all buddy-buddy with him, with his path he could, in a manner of speaking, turn their path off by cutting the aether flow to them and they had no idea as he would do it so fast.

One time in particular there was a guy who had the ability to fly. Ky found it absolutely hilarious when the guy was shooting his shot and out of nowhere had his aether disrupted for the briefest of moments and fell flat on his face. Ky started smiling at the memory as he almost peed himself laughing. His mom was not impressed with the guy and didn't even bother healing the scrapes and bruises before walking away shaking her head.

"Mr. Ekart!" A man in button up shirt and slacks called out with a tablet in his hand.

Ky quickly stood and made his way over.

"Please come with me for your background interview." He said.

Kyrain was led down the hall and into a small conference room where he was directed to a chair. The man sat down across from him.

"My name is Allen and I'll be verifying information with you, making sure all is in order for verification.

Your name is Kyrain Ekart.

You were born here in Tennessee to Sorin and Brittanie Ekart.

Mother is an adventurer with a healing focus who works at the hospital.

Your dad is not an adventurer?"

Kyrain nodded along until the Allen got to the question.

"No. My dad was listed in the missing from the bomb drops here. He was in the Army and was doing a training exercise." Ky answered.

"I'm sorry to hear that. That seems to be the unfortunate fate of many of the more modern initiates we get now." Allen said as he continued reading.

"You path is Spellbreaker at tier 2. Your path gives nullification abilities. That's incredibly interesting and depending on how it works, you might actually do exceedingly well in the guild and might even get invited into the bounty hunter program."

Ky's eyebrows went up.

"Bounty hunter program?!" He said excitedly.

"Absolutely! Many people decide to use their path to harm society and so the guild trains, deputizes, and dispatches adventurerers called Hunters to hunt them down and take them either dead or alive depending on the warrant that is made out for them." Allen replied watching Kyrain's excited face.

"That would be awesome! When can I begin learning and training for that program?!" Ky asked.

Allen laughed. "Unfortunately, they only take bronze rank adventurers as candidates so you have to work within the guild, train and rank up in the guild then submit and wait for an invite if they want you for the program." He said.

Kyrain frowned at that.

"You can however, begin studying the laws, rules, and regulations governing the use of paths, the history, and methods of the bounty hunters contained in the guild archives here. The bounty program was started actually by our previous Secretary of Defense Todd Robinson and now I believe his oldest daughter just became a bounty hunter." Allen said trying to bring the boy back around.

Kyrain's frown went a way a bit.

"Let us continue. You put here that you have no criminal record, you get great reviews at school with only minor altercations from bullies which you have claimed self defense and defense of others." Allen read off.

"That's correct. A few of the people at school like to use their paths to pick on people and the teachers are not always around to stop it. They sometimes target my cousins and I because of who my mother is and our uncle." Kyrain explained.

Allen nodded and tapped the screen a few times, before turning it around.

"That is a perfect segway into final item before the guild sends a copy to your parent or guardian for their signature as you are not 18 and begins verifying your information. Please read the following and sign. If either of you do not sign this, the guild cannot process you and you cannot join."

Kyrain took the pad and began reading.

I, Kyrain Ekart, certify under the penalty of perjury that all information provided is accurate. I acknowledge that while in the initiate and junior adventurer program I will be required to maintain a clean criminal record and graduate from high school in order to become a full adventure.

I also have read and understood that being an adventurer is an inherently dangerous occupation. I understand and accept the risks associated with becoming an adventurer.

Kyrain signed his name in the proper location then handed the pad back to Allen who saved swipped the screen away bringing up a new screen. He reached down into a bag and pulled out a small machine and a box.

In that box had smooth stainless steel cards. He put one into the machine then plugged the pad into it and tapped a button. The machine began making noises consistent with laser etching. After a couple of minutes the machine stopped and spit out the metal card.

Allen took the card and reviewed it against the screen, nodded, then handed it to Kyrain who looked it over himself. It had some information in the front and smooth on the back with the guild symbol and a smart chip.
