Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse

Chapter 269: Future Plans

Leng Pan breathed out a sigh of relief once Lu Zhen helped her shed the excess layers. The sudden warmth that wrapped around her body felt like a cocoon, starkly different from the icy air she had felt in her own apartment.

"It's getting colder too quickly," she muttered, rubbing her palms together as if to chase away the lingering chill.

"The snow has already started falling. Moreover, it doesn't look like regular snow. If this continues, people won't be able to go outside without worrying about turning into ice blocks." Li Yunjia commented with a sigh when she saw her beloved daughter-in-law.

"If it keeps dropping this way, many people outside won't survive." Uncle Li also added with a solemn expression.

Everyone was worried about things getting too harsh and humanity not even needing zombies to eradicate them anymore.

Leng Pan's lips pressed into a thin line. She thought of the two elite soldiers they had met earlier.

If other ordinary humans could be as strong as them then many more people would survive.

Back at Ouyang Jin's residence, the atmosphere was just as tense. But not because of the cold weather but because of his warning.

After his warning, the others had fallen into silence, each processing his words.

"What exactly could Commander Qui be looking for?" Su Yan finally asked, breaking the heavy quiet.

"If I knew, I'd have told you already," Ouyang Jin replied sharply, though not unkindly.

He placed the box he had carried from the base on the desk, unlocking it with a click. Inside were maps, documents, and some high-grade weapons he had 'borrowed' before leaving.

One would wonder how all those things could fit in there. The box was big, but it didn't look that big.

"No matter what he is looking for, it could never be anything good in his hands. Also, it is better if we didn't know about it so that we would not accidentally let it slip and end up selling the commander." Momo was more mature than the others.

Even though she was also curious, she understood that curiosity killed the cat. So, she thought it was better not to find out what Leng Pan might have found.

Seeing that Ouyang Jin had come back to the living room with the box he just went into the study with, everyone was curious.

However, when they saw the things he was taking out, they were astonished.

Zai Zai whistled softly. "You really didn't leave empty-handed, also, did you empty their armory?"

Even though there weren't many weapons, they were obviously of a technology beyond the current weapons.

The base couldn't possibly have many of them, but Ouyang Jin had taken several. This was indeed cleaning them up.

Ouyang Jin ignored the remark, pulling out one of the folded maps and spreading it across the table.

"Whatever Qui wants, it's connected to Leng Pan. That much is certain. And if his elite squad is tailing her already, then we don't have much time to act."

They didn't hide their actions from the people they had saved from the laboratory because they had already briefed them about their mission.

Moreover, because of how they had been treated by the military, the few people were more than willing to join the squad and combat both aliens, traitors, and zombies.

Momo crossed her arms when she heard what Ouyang Jin said, leaning against the seat. "So, are you saying we should warn her directly? Or wait and observe first?"

"Neither," Ouyang Jin said.

"She and Lu Zhen are already aware of this and are even trying to turn the soldiers working for Commander Qui.

We just need to wait for their instructions. However, as we wait, we have to make plans and avoid drawing any attention to ourselves.

We can make others believe that we are loose survivors trying to band together to survive. In this way, no one will pay attention to us." Ouyang Jin had thought about it. Before they were fully operational, it was better to keep a low profile.

The others exchanged glances. It was a dangerous game, but it seemed that they had no choice but to play it.

Back in Lu Zhen's apartment, the tension was soon swept away by Lu Tao who said that most people in their building had lit fires to warm themselves.

So the danger of dying of cold was still kept at bay.

"You're awake just in time," Mother Lu said with a relieved smile. "We were discussing food rationing. The food will last, but if more people join us, we'll have to start calculating differently."

"What do you mean, mother?" Leng Pan didn't understand because even if the supplies outside were limited, they had a lot in the space bangle.

Lu Zhen nodded. "We've already attracted attention, Panpan. The moment we showed strength, others began to notice.

I expect we'll have visitors sooner rather than later, some genuine, some opportunistic.

If I am not wrong, there are some people in our building and other buildings in our community who have refused to leave and go join the base because they saw our abilities.

They should think that if they joined us, their lives would be better than joining the base where everything is communal.

Even though we don't have to take on everyone to avoid raising traitors who lean towards the side with the most benefits, we will still take in more people.

We do have a lot of food in the space, but Baby, that food is not renewable. Once it's used, it can't be refilled anymore." Lu Zhen explained in detail to his wife.

After Leng Pan understood their meaning, she thought about it for a while and remembered the land that had expanded in her space bangle.

She suddenly slapped her thigh and squilled, scaring everyone there.

"Did you guys forget? The land that appeared in the space can be used to grow crops. We can grow both vegetables and long-term grains. I am not sure if the crops will mature faster, but I think if we add some spiritual spring water to irrigate them they would be more abundant.

What do you think?" She had such a big smile on her face that everyone felt as if their day had become sunny even in the midst of the extreme cold.

When everyone remembered that space of land, they were indeed overjoyed.

"Yes, how could we forget about that? In that case, even if more people come, we can sort them out." Auntie Li said with a smile.

"Also, with my superpower, we will have an excuse as to where we get so much fresh food. This is just heaven sent." The middle-aged woman was over the moon when she thought of this.

Just as they continued to discuss what to do when their team became bigger, a knock on the door made them all stiffen.

Lu Tao used his X-ray vision and looked through the door. He found two slightly buff men standing at the door wrapped completely.

He had seen them before, even if it was through a wall. They were the soldiers his brother and sister-in-law had gone to recruit a few days ago.

"It's those two you guys went to talk to a few days ago." He let everyone in the living room know who was at the door.

"Go let them in then." Lu Zhen said to his younger brother.

"Okey dokey." Lu Tao said before standing up and going to open the door.

When the two soldiers entered the apartment, they were surprised to find that the people inside were wearing normal clothes and didn't seem to be having a hard time due to the cold.

Thinking about how cold their apartment was, they didn't want to leave at all.

They had been so busy investigating the catalyst core that they didn't have the time to prepare the right supplies to combat such extreme weather.

It was only in the last two days that they had gone out to look for fuel and other things to help them heat the house and themselves.

Now stepping into a house where they had to take off layers of their thick clothes because the house was too warm was actually more than a miracle.

They hoped that if they told these people their decision, their lives would be a bit more comfortable than following Commander Qui.

"Come in and sit down." Leng Pan welcomed them warmly and auntie Li immediately got up to go and get hot soup from the kitchen.

Uncle Li had made it for them to drink if they felt that the cold was too much. Now, it could also help to entertain and warm their guests.

She brought two bowls of soup to the two men and gave them each a large piece of freshly baked bread.

Blaze and Silk didn't stand on ceremony as they took the soup and bread and started wolfing them down.

This was the most delicious and comfortable meal they had had in a long time.
