Chapter 262: A Good Fight
In a half-collapsed convenience store, they found two boxes of canned food hidden behind the counter. Leng Pan's sharp eyes also caught a stash of batteries tucked under a drawer.
Even though these things appeared pathetic compared to the supplies they had in the space bangle, a mosquito was still considered meat.
Leng Pan had no intention of leaving anything behind.
"Even though these things are not some rare goods, they will be useful somewhere." She said while tossing them into the space.
"That's true. Things will get worse as these non-renewable resources disappear. So, it's better if we took whatever we find." Lu Zhen agreed with his wife on this point. Well, he agreed with his wife on everything.
Just as they were about to leave, a low growl echoed from behind the shelves.
They hadn't expected there to be a zombie hiding. How come it didn't make a sound since they entered the shop?
A mutated zombie crawled out, its arms elongated and its movements unnaturally fast.
Unlike ordinary zombies, its eyes had reddish veins crisscrossing inside. Moreover, its pupils had some glow to them.
This was definitely not the usual look of zombies.
Leng Pan's grip on her twin swords tightened.
"Now this one looks interesting." It was as if she was cheering for getting a more interesting toy.
The creature lunged at them, knocking aside shelves in its path. Lu Zhen fired two shots, one grazing its shoulder and the other embedding in its chest, but it didn't stop.
However, his goal wasn't to stop it, but to slow it down a bit. If he killed it directly, his wife won't have anything to have fun with. That was why he didn't aim for the head directly.
Leng Pan met it head-on, slashing upward to block its claws. The impact pushed her back several steps, and she felt the strain in her arms. The thing was stronger than most mutants they'd fought before.
It looked like it was a strength-type mutated zombie. Things were getting more interesting than she had anticipated.
The mutant zombie was fast, darting around with an animal-like agility. For a moment, it almost looked like it was enjoying the fight.
Leng Pan hadn't expected the zombie to be so fast. Its attacks were also ruthless with its sharp claws always aiming at her vitals.
It was as if it knew what it was doing.
Lu Zhen circled around the zombie, aiming for its legs, while Leng Pan kept its attention with quick and precise sword strikes.
Then, with a calculated movement, Leng Pan lured it into lunging at her again while at the exact second it leapt towards her, Lu Zhen shot its knee, throwing it off balance.
Leng Pan took the chance to bring down her swords at its head, splitting its skull in two brutally.
The zombie collapsed between them as a crystal core fell to the side.
Leng Pan used her water superpower again to clean the crystal core before putting it away.
That was at least a good fight. It challenged Leng Pan's skills of attack and speed.
Without even breaking a sweat, Leng Pan stood up with a smile.
"That was better."
Lu Zhen glanced at her with a faint chuckle. "Baby, you really are happiest covered in blood, just like in the past."
Lu Zhen remembered that in the ancient apocalypse, Leng Pan had developed a liking for hunting zombies and would only smile when she killed them.
That was the reason she had risen in ranks to become a commander when she was still so young.
"It's not happiness," she corrected him teasingly. "It just makes me feel alive."
Lu Zhen shook his head but didn't argue with her. He understood her in a way no one else did, even she herself.
After they made sure that they hadn't missed anything in the shop, the two lovers left and continued to head towards the city. They would kill any zombie they came across and take anything useful that caught their eye.
By the time they reached the outskirts of a collapsed district, the mist had thinned significantly, revealing a wide street littered with abandoned cars.
However, what caught their attention wasn't the ruined vehicles, but the sounds. There were low moans and shuffling feet coming from the front.
Hundreds of zombies were moving slowly in a loose horde, wandering aimlessly as if waiting for prey.
Moreover, it seemed that they had smelled them as they moved faster towards them.
Leng Pan's eyes narrowed as she watched the zombies increase their speed. "Looks like we found the real hunt." She commented with even more anticipation than before.
Lu Zhen pulled the Miao saber from his back and took on a fighting stance.
"We can't take them all head-on to avoid unnecessary injuries, but we can thin them out slowly." He said with just as much anticipation as his wife.
The two exchanged a glance, the silent kind of communication they had almost perfected.
Leng Pan rushed to the side, climbing onto the roof of a car for higher ground. She tucked the twin swords in two scabbards hanging on the side of her waist and pulled a gun out of the space bangle.
She aimed at the approaching zombies and with each pull of the trigger, a zombie collapsed.
She was getting better as a shot than before. It looks like her previous skills were coming back. It felt like a muscle memory as she didn't have to put too much effort into it.
Meanwhile, Lu Zhen had faced the zombie horde head on as wherever his sword passed, several years fell.
As Leng Pan watched the horde thin down, she felt unsatisfied with just shooting then.
Thus, leapt down into the chaos. Her gun was kept away and a Tang sword appeared in her hand.
Her blade cut arcs through the crowd, each swing clean and merciless. Blood sprayed across her thick coat, but she moved forward without hesitation.
It was as if she was trying to compete with Lu Zhen to see who chopped off more heads.
