Chapter 259: Shadows in the Night
The truck sped through the night, the hum of its engine low as if even it understood the need for silence.
The group of escapees sat huddled together in the back, too tense to speak. After taking a couple of sips of the water from the bottle Vanish passed to them, their ragged breaths and pounding hearts finally calmed down a little.
They had escaped the base, yes, but freedom outside those walls did not guarantee safety. They felt that they had to do something to ensure that they never experience that again.
"Where are we heading?" The girl with the space ability finally asked in a whisper. Her hands were still trembling from anxiety as she clutched her knees.
As the adrenaline wore off, fear finally kicked in. It had been dangerous escaping.
"To a safe house," Su Yan answered calmly without turning back. Putting aside the teasing tone she used on Vanish. The tone carried a steadiness that eased some of their panic.
"Once there, you'll have time to rest. After that, your next steps will depend on you."
Indeed, they wanted this group of people to join them in their cause, but they wouldn't force anyone. So, even though they saved them, the people still had the freedom to make their own choices.
"Safe house?" one of the men muttered bitterly. "Do such things still exist in this rotten world?" He looked outside the window and saw zombies retreating into the darkness. It looked like whatever had been used to lure the zombies to the base was gone.
Yes, they were not stupid, they knew that those zombies had been lured to the base to give them a chance to escape.
Su Yan didn't answer. Vanish gave him a sidelong glance but said nothing either. Some truths were better revealed later, once the fragile survivors had regained enough strength to handle them.
After all, if at this moment they mistakenly dropped a bomb about the apocalypse being man-made, it might just kill them.
The air in the truck was heavy, but everyone seemed to instinctively respect Vanish's silence.
Though gaunt and weakened due to lack of sufficient food and water, his sharp eyes and the aura of someone used to living at the edge of a knife kept them in line.
Minutes ticked by as the truck sped through streets and alleys.
Then suddenly….
Bang!
The truck jolted violently as something slammed against its side. The space superpower girl screamed before she quickly covered her mouth.
"Zombies?" someone gasped.
Vanish's eyes narrowed. "No. That hit wasn't random." He was trained well enough to determine that much.
From the passenger seat, Su Yan grabbed her rifle and peered into the dark through the side mirror.
Shadows flickered among the trees lining the road they were currently on. She caught a glimpse of headlights quickly turned off and the faint outline of another vehicle tailing them.
"Someone is following us." She said with her eyes still trailing those shadows.
She was a superpower user, so her senses were sharper than the average person.
Vanish clicked his tongue. "Figures. Commander Qui wouldn't just let us go like that. And our escape was too smooth."
The truck swerved sharply as Celebrity who was driving maneuvered it off the main road and onto a dirt path.
Dust billowed in the wake of the tires, masking them briefly, but the pursuing engine roared louder behind.
Inside, the rescued captives clung to the truck's sides, fear etched across their faces.
"Hold tight!" Celebrity barked. At that moment, he didn't resemble the goofy guy making fun of Su Yan. He was a seasoned soldier on a mission that could not fail.
The girl with the space ability suddenly clenched her fists. "I…I can store the truck if needed. But we'll all be stranded in the open." The reason she thought this way was because the truck was a huge target. With it, they were spotted easily.
"Not yet," Vanish cut in coldly. "That's our last resort. Zai Zai, give me the wheel."
Zai Zai, or Celebrity raised a brow but didn't argue. The moment Vanish slid into the driver's seat, his sharp movements betrayed none of the weakness from before.
His hands gripped the wheel with practiced ease, and in an instant, the truck became a beast under his control.
With a sudden swerve, Vanish led them into a narrow forest track. Branches scraped the sides, sparks flying as metal clashed against bark.
Actually, this had been a park before, but it was near the outskirts of the city.
The pursuing vehicle hesitated at the entrance, giving them a precious few seconds of lead.
"Su Yan, try to flatten their tyres." Vanish commanded.
Su Yan didn't need to be told twice as the rifle in her hand produced a cocking sound and the glass on the door at her side rolled down.
She steadied the rifle on the window facing the back of the truck and took aim.
Bang! A bullet rang out in the quiet night and a screech of tires followed.
She had hit the mark. Her marksmanship had always been top notch, even in the ancient past.
Before the people in the car behind could steady the vehicle, another bang! Was heard and another tire became flat.
This would ensure the vehicle could no longer move.
Gasps filled the truck.
Just as they thought they had gotten rid of their pursuers, they realized that those people had gotten out of their vehicle and were chasing them on foot.
The hearts that had just calmed down, rose to the throat again. The people who had just escaped were afraid that they would be caught and taken back.
"Mr. Flames, give me some of your flame." Vanish suddenly ordered.
The mad with a fire superpower knew he was talking to him but didn't understand what he meant by asking him to give him some of his flames.
"Hurry." Seeing that the man was in a daze, Vanish urged him.
