Chapter 253: Giving The Neighbors a Choice
Leng Pan and Lu Zhen looked at each other and both saw the smile in the other's eyes.
This was exactly what they wanted. They wanted to build a team but they didn't want to include people who only cared about their own survival. They wanted people in their team who cared more about humanity because if it collapsed, then everything else would be lost.
Now, looking at the three people sitting there and pledging their loyalty, they felt gratified.
They had not helped these people in vain. In fact, their team didn't have to be big, it just had to have people who were committed to their cause and the people in front of them, at least Janna and Juan Ke could be counted on.
As for Xu Man, they would have to observe him for a while before making that decision.
"Okay, we have heard your opinion, but you have to know that what we plan to do is not something insignificant. There are forces in this apocalypse that will try to push humanity to the abyss and we will have to fight them.
If you feel that you are not ready, then you don't have to join us. You can go to the base and live a normal life like everyone else.
Especially you Xu Man. You have a family to look after and it might be more challenging to you than anyone else. So, I suggest you talk it over with your family before making a final decision. Don't be rush about it." Leng Pan said what she needed to say because she didn't want them to make a decision in a moment of impulse and once they find out what they were up against, they back out.
They couldn't afford people who had only one foot in their cause. That could be fatal.
The three people heard what Leng Pan said and only then did a thought come to their minds, 'the apocalypse might not be a natural disaster.'
This thought terrified them to no end. They had thought that the catastrophe that had wiped out most of the humans in the world was a natural occurrence, maybe caused by the angry nature of being destroyed by humans.
However, from the tone Leng Pan used, they could deduce that there was a human hand in it.
This was something that they had not expected. They had watched movies where in the plot, the villain thought that the earth was overpopulated and used a bio-weapon to kill masses of people in order to reduce the population and save the earth.
However, they had always thought that those were plots of movies and could never happen in real life. However, listening to Leng Pan, it looked like they were facing such a situation.
The three guests finished their tea and said goodnight before leaving.
As they descended the stairs, everyone had their own thoughts and no one said anything to the other.
They all went back to their apartments with heavy hearts.
Xu Man had just walked into his living room when his wife noticed that something was wrong.
She thought that the Lu family had turned their plans to join them down and went over to comfort him.
"Honey, you don't have to be sad. If we can't join their team, then we can just go to the base. It's not too late to pack and go tomorrow. Don't be sad about it." Even though Mrs. Xu was disappointed that they couldn't join the Lu family team, she wasn't dissatisfied.
After all, those people have a lot of strength and them joining was just riding on their coat tails. It didn't matter if they couldn't join them. They had already reaped some benefits by following them to scavenge for supplies the other day.
They had enough food to last them for a few months and didn't have to worry about anything for the time being.
So, even if they went to the safe base, they would still have enough time to adjust before they begin to worry about their livelihood.
Xu Man looked at his worried wife and felt the heavy stone in his chest lift. He had not realized before that his wife's comfort could actually elevate his worries so much.
Before the trip with Leng Pan and Lu Zhen, he had always hidden his emotions and worries deep and never let his wife know about them.
He always believed that as a man, he didn't have to ask a woman for help and she couldn't help with anything anyway. So, he never let his wife share in his worries.
But now that he had dropped his male chauvinism, his wife also stepped up to share his worries and would comfort him when he was troubled.
He smiled lightly at his wife and took her hand.
"They didn't refuse to let us join." He said to his wife and parents who also happened to be in the living room.
The elders in the house had gotten used to their son being close to their daughter-in-law recently. Even though they didn't approve of such behavior as they thought that it made Xu Man appear less domineering as a man, they didn't say anything as he refused to listen to them and insisted that his wife was his equal partner and deserved his respect.
"Then why do you look so despondent?" Mrs. Xu asked her husband.
Even though he was smiling at the moment, she could tell he was worried.
"We just found out that the apocalypse might be the work of humans and not some natural disaster." Xu Man said lightly, but that one sentence cast a heavy silence in the room.
"What do you mean?" Xu Man's father, Old Man Xu asked.
This was the first time he had even thought about the possible cause of the apocalypse. However, he didn't expect to hear that it might be man-made.
How could anyone make something that would cause such devastation in the world? Moreover, what would such actions gain them?
