Chapter 149: REUNION
Aaron followed Isobel through the winding paths of Athanys, arriving at the villa specially prepared for his parents, its elegant structure nestled amid lush gardens that bloomed eternally under the sanctuary's magical sky. Inside, Liam and Charlotte sat together, enjoying each other's company, their laughter a warm echo that tugged at Aaron's heartstrings.
He stood outside the door, frozen in place, his golden eyes misting with unexpected emotion. "Mum? Dad?" he called softly, his voice barely above a whisper. He could not explain the surge of passion welling up inside him. They were not his biological parents in his pre-reincarnation life, yet the bond felt unbreakable, a deep attachment woven into his soul.
[No need to complicate things, Aaron. They are your parents. They see it that way. Everyone sees it that way. You are not wrong to see it that way as well.]
"Aaron," Charlotte smiled sweetly, noticing the presence of Aaron and Isobel, and rose to her feet with graceful urgency. She pulled Aaron into a tight embrace, warm tears streaming from her eyes, her hold conveying years of longing and regret.
"My sweet son. I was scared I would never see you again. I am so sorry for leaving you behind," Charlotte whispered, her voice breaking as she sobbed quietly, her hands trembling against his back.
"Son. I am proud of you. To accomplish this much without us. It is to be expected of my son," Liam said, his smile broad and genuine, his eyes shining with paternal pride as he watched the reunion unfold.
"Come. Let me make you your favorite dish," Charlotte said lovingly, leading Aaron into the villa and settling him comfortably on the sofa, her movements quick and nurturing. She hurried off to the kitchen to prepare something special for her son, Isobel tagging along with a warm smile to assist, the two women sharing a quiet bond in their shared affection for him.
"Isobel told me everything you have accomplished. And everything you had to go through in our absence. I am sorry to put you through so much," Liam apologized, his voice heavy with remorse as he sat beside Aaron, the weight of lost time evident in his expression.
"It is fine. You did what you could to save the world. I see nothing wrong with that," Aaron consoled his father, his tone reassuring, though a flicker of old pain lingered in his eyes.
"And that is the first lesson I will give you. See everything wrong with that. We your parents were foolish. So foolish to choose the world over our own. That is not being a hero, son, that is being stupid. So here is my advice, an experience I gained from my decisions. Be the hero, but never above your own family or the people you love," Liam said seriously, locking eyes with Aaron, his gaze intense and filled with hard-won wisdom.
[Yup. Fathers never change. Always ready to dish out important advice. Although if I must say, his son has it all covered,] the system remarked. Aaron could have sworn he heard a hint of melancholy in its voice, a rare glimpse of sentiment from his constant companion.
"That is good. I guess you will not hate me when I resolve the current conflict within my empire. I was beginning to wonder how to convince you and your moral justice," Aaron said, heaving a sigh of relief, his shoulders relaxing as the weight of potential disapproval lifted.
"My first advice will be a secret between us, okay? Your mum can absolutely not find out," Liam warned, realizing his son was not as docile as he appeared. He feared being labeled a bad influence by his wife if she caught wind of it, his expression turning conspiratorial.
"Dad. Honestly. You should be advising us to show constraint. Isobel especially. Guess she summarized the parts of her crazy actions," Aaron mused, a hint of amusement in his voice.
"What actions?" Liam asked, speechless, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"Nothing grand, Dad. Just killed every awakened within a city and fed on a large number of people to grow stronger. But hey, Dad, I turned them, so they technically did not die," Isobel returned to the living room to defend herself. With her hybrid senses at basically hybrid queen level, the highest rank after the primogenitor, she easily overheard Aaron's conversation with Liam, her entrance light and playful.
"But you would still do the same if you knew they would die completely, would you not?" Aaron asked his sister playfully, his eyes twinkling with sibling mischief.
"Of course. I needed strength, they were douchebags, making the decision was actually easy. I am still pissed at you for killing my foster mother though. That should have been me," Isobel teased, the banter between siblings causing Liam to feel a bit of headache, his hand rubbing his temple as he processed the shift in their moral compasses.
He did not know just how drastically the moral standings of his children had evolved while he was gone, and he feared delving deeper into it, the revelations stirring a mix of concern and admiration.
The playful conversation among the three soon shifted to a more serious tone, with Aaron steering the discussion forward. "Isobel. I know where Dracula's body is within the void. I know the coordinates," Aaron said calmly, his words dropping like a revelation into the room.
"Dracula? As in my grandfather?" Liam asked in surprise, leaning forward with wide eyes.
"Yes," Aaron replied. It was one of the pieces of information he had gleaned while viewing the timelines during his time rewind, the ancient secrets unfolding before him like forgotten scrolls.
"Where is he? Can we awaken him anytime soon?" Isobel asked, half excited, her eyes lighting up with anticipation. From the stories Lyrith had shared, she felt an intense urge to meet Dracula, the legendary figure who had shaped their bloodline.
"Depends on how much stronger I can become and how fast our next phase of action can proceed," Aaron explained, his mind already mapping out the challenges ahead.
"What is the next phase?" Isobel asked, curious about what her brother was planning, her hybrid instincts sensing the gravity behind his words.
"You will find out soon enough after I take care of the ungrateful pests," Aaron replied. "Mum is here," he added with a smile, as they all rose to help Charlotte set the dinner table, the aroma of her cooking filling the villa with warmth.
