Reincarnated Wehraboo's Revenge

Chapter 57: The rescue

The day passed in preparations.

The three soldiers left behind from the Brandenburg were all armed with the Mp40 schmeisser submachine gun along with 128 rounds in six cartridges.

They were hooked on both side of their waist belt with the Y-strap they wore.

The Leutnant also had his Walther P38 sidearm.

Since they never flew a glider and the operations had to commence at night, the Luftwaffe ground crew adjusted the direction of the ballistas that would launch them so that the gliders could fly straight to Frundestein city.

The time was set at sunset while there was still light, so that the soldiers can land at the capital when it was almost dark.

This way some of the disadvantages of the night raid could be avoided.

Also the veteran pilots advised them to always keep an eye on the compass and align the gliders by shifting their bodyweight.

As the evening approached, Erika couldn't hold her excitement.

She was eager to see the soldiers return safely with her and Hanna's father.

She also decided not to go back home until the commandos return with them.

Though this was protested by everyone else but she couldn't control herself.

In the afternoon after the sunset, the gliders were launched.

Since there were only two ballistas in the airfield, the Leutnant had to launch after one of the unteroffizier.

Erika saw as the three gliders raced to the horizon that was painted scarlet from the leftover sunlight.

In the royal palace, everything was almost the same as before.

The only exception was the absence of the prince who had left with the king's knights for the Raubenbraum borders.

Since the knights were absent, the only people guarding the palace were the household guards.

Though they were people to be weary of.

Only the best of the kings knights had the privilege of joining the household guards.

It was a job they took pride in.

In a way they were more difficult to deal than the knights.

The premium shiny armour they wore caught the envy of any knight.

But to them it was boring as all they did was guard the palace, which was inside the capital and under strict protection of the knights.

Everything was lively and the servants were all doing their respective works.

As the light in the sky faded, it was time for a change of shift of the guards.

The guards tired from all patrolling the palace all day returned to the barracks as new and energetic guards replaced them.

The night's darkness had set in. It was a time when everyone was tired after the day's work and would go to rest.

The servants lit, torches all around the royal palace giving it a distinct bright look that could be differentiated from its surroundings.

In the gliders the commandos noticed this anomaly and recognised their target.

Soon they pushed down the control stick to attempt a landing inside the palace garden, which they found to be still dark and devoid of human presence.

They used the day's last light to navigate their way through many cities and towns to find the capital and by the time they reached, it was dark.

Now the gliders landed discreetly on the king's flower bed destroying the flowers and crushing them under the glider's belly.

The three commandos got out of their gliders and gathered at together in the middle of the garden.

They had landed a little far away from one another.

Meeting up they rounded up and sat on their knees. Everyone was tensed and excited.

"Hey Karl, blow up the gliders and then secure the palace gates. While Gunther and I will rescue the prisoners." The leutnant finalised the plan.

"Remember, don't stay here after blowing the gliders up." He warned.

As planned, Karl moved from one glider to another and tossed the grenades he carried inside them.

After blowing up the gliders, he moved to the palace gates, and hid himself in a bush in the dark.

The sound of explosion has already alerted everyone and the household guards rushed to the scene.

This created an opportunity for Gunther and Leutnant Jerry since everyone rushed to the source of the loud bang they heard.

They quietly rushed to the spot that Erika showed them as the entrance to the dungeon.

Only one guard was left at the gate. So jerry wanted to get rid of him silently.

He made a hissing noise hiding behind a barrel that was placed a little far from the gate.

"Who's there?" The guard in front of the gate said.

He walked towards the source of the sound stepping right into the trap of Jerry.

Gunther was a little further away and closed in behind the guard.

The guard was taken aback seeing the weirdly dressed person behind the barrel in the dark.

He put forward his spear and was about to ask who he was but before that Gunther hit his head with the butt of his gun and knocked him out.

He took the keys that were tied in the guard's pocket.

Gunther opened the lock as Jerry waited behind him holding his gun ready to shoot anyone inside.

Meanwhile, at the wreckage site in the garden, the guards were surprised at the scene in front of them.

The unknown things of weird shapes broken apart in pieces and the flowers crushed underneath them.

They couldn't understand what the things were and how they arrived in the heavily guarded palace.

Many were making speculations about the mystery objects in front of them.

As they were scratching their heads for what had happened and how to answer for it, a stream of loud sound was heard.

The guards were surprised and rushed to the dungeon from where the sound was coming from.

As Gunther opened up the gate a guard inside came out and was immediately knocked out by Jerry.

"Let's go, the other palace guards must've heard it. We must hurry." Jerry ordered.

They entered the dungeon and navigated through it looking from cell to cell to find their targets.

The number of guards were not high inside.

It's likely that they were in the process of changing and had rushed to the garden when the gliders were blown up.

After clearing the first floor, they went down a stair case to the second floor.

In the stairs they found some more guards rushing upwards most possible startled by the sound of gunfire.

Jerry and Gunther neutralised them as well.

The Mp40 had the advantage of rapid firing in places like these where the space is small.

The soldiers in such places would be vulnerable to close range attacks.

But the rapid firing from the submachine gun made sure that Jerry and Gunther were able to mow down anyone that approached them.

However, both of them tried to conserve ammunation by only taking precise shots.

In the second floor there were many more cells with many prisoners.

"Gunther you go left and I'll go right. Call if you find the targets."

In this floor there were no more guards left, since all them had rushed upwards and were shot.

The atmosphere was damp and there was a very bad stench coming from the cells.

The corridor was lit by torches that hung on the wall serially one after another so Jerry and Gunther had no trouble navigating through them.

Inside them, the prisoners all tried to look at what was happening from the gaps in the doors made with metal bars.

"Hey, get us out, get us out." The prisoners shouted to the commandos.

"Herr Leutnant, I found them." gunther shouted.

Jerry rushed to the end of the corridor where Gunther stood in front of a cell.

"Are you Kommandant Erika's father Walther Raubenbraum and Lord Landsturm?" Gunther asked before calling Jerry.

The two were inside the same cell and were both surprised and horrified at the commotion outside.

"Yes, we are. But who are you and what do you want from us?!" Walther asked.

He was more composed than Landsturm.

Both he and Landsturm thought that it was prince who was staging an accident to get rid of them.

However, the commandos that entered wearing weird uniforms and a metal pot on their heads.

Jerry gave them the traditional Wehrmacht salute.

"Milord, Kommandant Erika has sent us to get you out. I know you have many questions but please trust us." He reassured both of them.

Meanwhile Gunther searched through the hooks on the wall and found the key to the cells.

In the meantime, the household guards poured into the dungeon noticing the gates wide open when they came following the sounds.

As the group went up through the stairs, they now faced more than 50 household guards rushing towards them.

Jerry and Gunther opened up on them but the number was overwhelming and they were running short on ammo.

"Gunther, go back and let the prisoners lose. They can work as diversion for the guards." Jerry shouted.

"Jawohl" Gunther said and rushed down the stairs.

He opened the cells one by one and told the prisoners to run outside.

Soon a brawl broke out and chaos ensued in the dungeon as the prisoners and guards fought each other.

In the chaos, Gunther and Jerry held the arms of Walther and Landsturm strongly and pulled them outside.

They occasionally shot the guards that tried to stop them while ignoring the others who were busy to contain the crowd of the prisoners.

However, they all knew that the prisoners can't stop the king's guards in arms and armour so they had to work fast.

As they got out of the dungeon, the commandos took the nobles to the kings garage to find the royal carriage.

They were overjoyed to see that one was already prepared with a horse attached probably for the king to go somewhere.

Gunther drove the carriage as Jerry, Walther and Landsturm sat inside.

As they drove through the place to the gates, Klarl had taken control of the it and opened it wide.

He was able to do it discreetly since all the guards became busy in the brawl with the other prisoners.

He jumped into the carriage as it drove by and sat beside Gunther.

No one at the city gates dared to stop them, since the carriage was marked with the Coat of Arms of the Royal family of Hohenstaufia signifying its importance.

Soon they were out of Frundestein and were on their way to Raubenbraum lands.
