Chapter 36
Since Lock entered, Keith never took his eyes off him.
Looking at the young face in front of him—still boyish, yet steady, his body clearly stronger than the last time they met—Keith allowed a small smile.
"Lock, you've grown taller."
"Yeah, I'm 1.65 meters now."
Lock answered plainly. His gaze shifted to the commander's head, the sunlight reflecting harshly off it. He smirked.
"Your hair's getting thinner again."
Keith gave a short laugh but quickly returned to a formal tone.
"You should call me Captain here." Then, after a beat, his voice softened. "When no one's around, you can speak freely."
He stepped forward, studied Lock carefully, and placed a firm hand on his shoulder.
"You're finally here. If your father knew, he'd be proud of you."
Keith had already heard from Levi about Lock's talent. More than a month had passed since then, and he was curious to see how far the boy had come.
Lock raised his hand sharply.
"Give your heart to human freedom."
Though he spoke with conviction, Lock knew his real reason for joining was survival—both for himself and the few people he cared about. Still, a higher rank and influence would give him the leverage he needed for plans.
Keith nodded with approval, his eyes bright.
"Good. You're ambitious."
For a moment, he almost regretted not keeping Lock by his side. But with the politics and endless duties of command, he had no time to train anyone personally. Levi's squad—the strongest in the Corps—was where Lock would grow the fastest.
Lock, unaware of Keith's inner thoughts, hesitated, then asked:
"Who will I be assigned to?"
"In a hurry already?" Keith squeezed his shoulder. "I discussed it with Erwin. He's optimistic about you. I've decided to place you under Captain Levi. No objections?"
"None." Lock's face lit with anticipation. "I met him during training. He's strong. There's much I can learn from him."
"That's the right mindset."
Keith was satisfied with his answer, though deep down he suspected Levi would soon have a headache. But that wasn't his concern.
After a brief exchange, Keith returned to his duties. A guard led Lock across the base to a small castle.
"Captain's squad stays here. You can go in." Without another word, the guard left.
Lock stepped inside, noting the difference immediately. A castle for a single squad—proof of the respect Levi commanded.
"Strength earns respect anywhere," he thought.
From upstairs came the sound of voices and movement. Lock climbed without hesitation. At the top, he nearly collided with a petite girl wearing a headscarf and a towel over her face. Only her eyes were visible.
Startled, she pulled down the cloth, revealing a gentle, attractive face. She frowned slightly.
"Who are you?"
Before Lock could answer, another voice rang out sharply from behind her.
"Petra, don't worry about him. We're short on hands. Just let the kid help clean up."
"Clean…"
Lock froze. His mouth twitched.
Was this really how his assignment to Levi's squad began?
