Chapter 475: [Dystopian Elven War] [51]
Since the day I got to know about Yennefer's involvement in the war…I feared for this to happen.
A constant fear that had been eating me from the inside.
All my battles till now have happened with those whom I hate or whom I want to save.
….For Yennefer I wasn't sure which one was it.
Now, as her staff moved gently in the air spells burst in the air in showers of blue, green, and gold.
I could see Kryllios clapping from the side as he marveled at Yennefer's spell.
My head turned slightly, as I lowered my body, forming ten different weapons on my side.
Yennefer's ember eyes never left me as her spell finally completed.
Then, it all happened in a split second.
The ground beneath me broke like shreds of glass as I moved.
The world narrowed to a single heartbeat.
A wall of shimmering runes bloomed before me blocking my path.
I twisted left, sending two blades ahead.
They struck the barrier and exploded in sparks, opening a thin gap just wide enough for me to pass through.
But Yennefer was ready.
A surge of blue light rippled from her staff, and a ring of gravity-dense magic slammed down like a hammer.
My knees buckled for a breath before I forced raw mana through my limbs, breaking free with a sharp crack of air.
She stepped lightly across the fractured floor, staff moving in circles that left trails of golden fire.
"Stop this, Himmel," she said, her voice steady, but I caught the strain beneath it. "If you run away, I don't have to do this."
"Shut up!" I snapped at her. "Don't tell me what to do!"
My heart wasn't in a good state and neither was my mind.
There was a bad feeling that I couldn't ignore.
She launched another strike, a storm of spinning spears that streaked toward me like falling stars.
Kryllios laughed from the throne, the sound low and mocking. "Marvelous. You truly surpass my expectations—."
He tilted his head just in time for the blade that I threw to graze past his face.
But at least his annoying voice had stopped for a while.
Yennefer's staff angled a half-second before the next spell.
I reached deeper, calling on every ounce of mana in the environment until the air trembled.
The ten weapons dissolved into one massive blade, black and covered in void.
Yennefer tightened her grip before she cut her spell halfway before creating a dome of pure energy that unfolded like a giant flower.
My blade cut downward, splitting the air with a roar. Her dome surged upward to meet it.
The impact shook the palace to its foundations.
The entire room burst outwards and the shreds of walls were thrown all around.
Now, cloudy sky loomed above us.
When the glare faded, we stood only a few paces apart.
I loosened the tension on my shoulders as I stared dead into her eyes.
The Sun Disk slowly appeared behind me as a measure to counter her spells.
"I have a way to cure Zenith." I said, slowly.
She trembled as her grip only tightened on her staff.
I raised my hand towards her. "Come with me and just let it go."
For a long breath Yennefer didn't move from her place.
She seemed to be thinking something else as her ember eyes remained blank.
Her eyes flicked to the Sun Disk behind me, then back to my hand.
"You expect me to believe that?" she asked, her voice low but unshaken.
"It's the truth." I kept my arm outstretched. "Just trust me for once."
She looked at my hand only for a second before she moved back.
"….I am sorry."
Her voice echoed before she moved her staff once again.
From behind I heard the roar of hundreds of men.
As I looked back, I found a troupe of soldiers rushing towards me.
My gaze then flickered towards the man floating in the air.
Kryllios smiled as he parted his lips. "Good luck."
I kept on staring at his face without speaking anything.
Does he really think their presence will change anything?
I ignored the incoming army as I looked back at Yennefer.
She was going all out as her staff moved to form different sigils in the air.
The soldiers poured through the broken arches like a living tide.
Their battle cries mingled with the crackling hiss of Yennefer's magic.
'Neplh.'
A single pulse of cold energy rippled out from me, and the first wave of soldiers froze mid-charge.
With a flick of my wrist, spears of void condensed and burst from the ground.
I moved those skewered bodies up in the sky so Kryllios could see it properly.
Yennefer's sigils flared at once—three layers of runes spinning in opposite directions.
Bolts of blue fire lanced toward me, each one sharp enough to tear a mountain in half.
I raised the Sun Disk behind me, tilting it like a great shield.
The first volley struck and absorbed into harmless streaks of light.
At the same instant I sent a cluster of void blades outward, their arcs precise and silent.
They cut through the second wave of soldiers before their boots even touched the cracked floor.
Yennefer wasn't waiting.
She dropped her staff to one hand and twisted the air itself, folding it into a spiraling cage.
From its heart she drew a spear of pure sunlight and hurled it straight at me.
I met her strike with the Sun Disk.
The impact cracked the sky like thunder, sending golden fragments spinning around us.
I used that same burst to leap high, summoning three phantom blades that hovered like hawks around her.
She countered instantly.
An emerald barrier bloomed at her feet, my blades struck, ringing off the shield in showers of sparks.
The army below regrouped with a roar, hundreds rushing again.
I landed in their midst, striking the ground with my palm.
Hundreds of branches burst out of the ground. It grabbed and squeezed them till their bones cracked.
Yennefer tried to take advantage of the situation as she moved her staff.
I moved first, grabbing the Sun Disk and throwing it at her.
Yennefer barely dodged, the ground beneath me broke as I jumped at her.
'She is good at close combat as well.'
I kept that in mind and so I made my plan around it.
She raised her staff and threw a spell at me at point blank range.
I called the Sun Disk back as I used it like a shield again.
It completely absorbed her attack as I now stood close to her.
Before she could understand, my fist collided with her stomach.
Yennefer folded in herself before her body shot backwards.
She caught herself just before striking the remains of a wall, one hand braced against the ground.
A faint tremor ran through her shoulders, but her ember eyes stayed sharp.
I lowered my arm, steadying my breath.
"Stay down, Yennefer," I said, my voice firm but not cruel. "I don't want to hurt you anymore."
She wiped a trace of blood from her lip and rose with quiet resolve.
"No," she answered simply.
I sent a burst of mana to overload the brains of those soldiers trying to flank me.
And I didn't forget to float their bodies till they reach Kryllios.
The staff in her grip pulsed once, a low, thrumming note that made the air vibrate.
From every broken fragment of the palace floor, light began to rise—threads of silver and gold weaving into a net overhead.
A trap.
I pushed mana into my legs and launched forward.
The Sun Disk flashed back into my hand as I cut through the net before it could seal.
Fragments of magic rained like shattered glass, stinging the air with sparks.
Yennefer met me halfway.
Her staff swept low, forcing me to leap.
I twisted in the air, grabbing her staff as I moved.
And—.
Crack!
I broke it in half and made her drop her weapon.
"Argh!"
A quick kick on her knee made her kneel in front of me, gritting through her pain.
I formed a blade of mana and placed it on her neck.
Yennefer stayed perfectly still, breath sharp in the cold air.
Even with the edge of my mana blade grazing her throat, her ember eyes held steady on mine.
I crouched down till I was in her eye level.
"….Use your kingdom." I spoke, my voice steady. "Why fight me physically when you are aware of my strength?"
She just chuckled softly as her eyes remained fixed on me.
"…You have grown a lot." She spoke, her voice strained. "I am proud of you—."
"Don't…" I cut her words, my hand trembled slightly. "Don't act like you are my mother now."
Her ember eyes searched my face.
For a moment I thought she would laugh again.
But she leaned in till her forehead touched my forehead. "…Kill me."
Her voice made me freeze for a second.
"…Only you can do this, Himmel."
I couldn't fathom her words as I just stared at her.
Stopping my heart from trembling, I spoke once again. "….Use your kingdom."
She didn't listen as she grabbed her broken staff.
---
Zenith blinked away the rain that damped her completely.
"How far are we!"
She asked, her voice whipping against the storming rain.
Siersha who sat beside her responded. "…We are here."
The vampire didn't look thrilled as her face was abnormally serious.
Zenith nodded slightly as her gaze fell on Avelia who was silent as well.
Her heart trembled as the horned serpent lowered his body.
Zenith found her body turning cold as they moved past some floating bodies.
The girl remembered this scene and she couldn't control her negative thoughts.
Zenith quickly jumped down the serpent as soon as it touched the ground.
"Anyone here…."
She mumbled softly as she moved through the broken palace.
Her eyes tried to find any form of life but she saw nothing.
Zenith kept on walking in the heavy rain with Siersha just a step away from her.
Finally, she found someone sitting under the rain.
Zenith's body trembled. "…Himmel."
Her gaze turned dim as she saw the lifeless body he was holding.
The scene overlapped with what she saw in her dream.
"….Mother?"
