Chapter 42: A Mother's Vow
A slow, steady echo of footsteps in the corridor harmonized with the soft cracking sounds of mirrors outside the castle.
Lidien walked, devoid of emotion, as he proceeded toward Lady Rose's night chamber... controlling the steady flow of his own blood with Incite of Blood, not letting his heartbeat erratically, for he knew a single wrong answer could lead to lying.
And Lady Rose's prowess and senses would let her know the sudden changes in Lidien's body if he spoke a word far from the truth.
After a few minutes of a walk that felt like an eternity, Lidien stood before the large door at the end of the long corridor.
Lidien knocked on the wooden door, its sound silencing his world.
"Come in."
He opened the door with a slow squeak, stepping inside... he saw Lady Rose wearing a nightgown that revealed her full curves, while hiding her crucial parts with thin fabric.
Lidien gulped as his eyes traced the edges of her curves... as he regained hold of his consciousness from mesmerization, he closed his eyes, calming his heart that had lost control.
A few seconds passed. Lidien then opened his eyes and smiled... unconsciously activating his partial transformation, making his eyes turn crimson.
"Mother... I'm here as you said..."
Lady Rose scrutinized Lidien before sitting on the large bed, gently sliding her hand over the silk blanket.
"Close the door, Lidien. You don't want someone seeing us like this... do you?"
Lidien turned around and closed the large wooden door, slowly...
And when he heard the clicking sound of the lock,
his back turned numb from the sudden oppressive feeling he felt behind him, as if a predator was stalking... he knew but couldn't react.
Lidien smiled like a child as he was... and forced himself to turn his head toward Lady Rose.
And there... Lady Rose was smiling, so beautiful behind her deadly eyes.
"Since when?" she said softly.
Lidien's cold expression almost broke from the vague question, his thoughts searching for an answer that could satisfy her.
"What do you mean since when? Mother..."
Lidien stared at her, waiting for her answer... as the question seemed so vague, he couldn't answer with specifics that would open up another topic.
"Come here... my son..."
Lidien walked towards Lady Rose, his feet so light they couldn't even make a sound... like his steadily beating heart.
And when Lady Rose pointed at the ground, Lidien kneeled in front of her, bowing.
She put her soft and gentle hands on Lidien's chin and slowly lifted it up... face to face, staring at his calm red eyes.
A hot breath touched Lidien's face... The scent of Lady Rose continuously calming his mind... Yet, he dared not relax, as he steadily controlled his heart with the Incite of Blood.
"Since when did you become a Blessed?"
Badump!
Lady Rose's eyes squinted... while Lidien scrambled and leaped backwards, widening the gap between them.
Suddenly, the room turned gold, from the verve exuded out of Lady Rose's curvaceous and alluring guise.
Instead of turning back to run, Lidien chose to stay and defend... transforming into his Blood Form, hissing in front of Lady Rose as he activated his Incite of Blood to its limit.
Even though his Sparkline wasn't fully healed yet.
Then...
Lady Rose snapped her fingers, a gold-like verve snaked towards Lidien, blocking everything he could block...
However, it was not enough...
As he fought, trying to escape the grasp of the gold-like verve lifting him up.
"Why struggle, my child? I just want to know the truth... Since when did you become a Blessed?"
Lidien bit his lips and tried not to think of an answer, for he didn't know what ability Lady Rose possessed, and if she had a Mind Reading ability, Lidien's life would be uncertain to be spared.
But he knew he needed to answer... a truth but not the whole truth at the same time.
Then Lidien smiled, a surrender as he deactivated everything... His Blood Form and Incite of Blood.
"I... absorbed an Essence from the Relic... to revive Lily."
Lady Rose's eyes widened as she abruptly lost control of her verve, making Lidien fall to the floor with a heavy thump.
She walked back and forth biting her nail, her crimson eyes alternating between madness and relief.
Then she stopped.
And stared at Lidien affectionately.
"Is that... because of the Blood Essence?"
Lidien nodded without saying anything.
"I see..."
Lady Rose weakly sat on the bed, her eyes welling up, but forcing herself not to release the tears...
"Do you know what it means to be a Blessed of Death?"
Lidien shook his head and smiled helplessly.
"I don't know... Mother, but this is the only way for us to revive Lily."
Lady Rose sighed, making Lidien confirm her stance.
Lady Rose hadn't forsaken him.
"Don't let anyone... know you are a Blessed of Death. Not only will Angels and Demons hunt you down... but the whole World, Lidien."
Lidien gripped his hands as he remembered the brutal experimentation and hundreds of corpses in a pit full of blood, all for a Blood Essence.
'Come find me then... I'll just revive Lily and hide, till my Power is enough to go against the World.'
As Lidien looked at Lady Rose, he asked.
"Will you hunt me down too, Mother?"
Lady Rose shook her head, walked towards him, and kneeled. She held his face and stared directly into his eyes... disregarding her status.
"No, my child... for you are my Son..."
Lidien's heart melted as the feeling of having a mother flooded back to him.
"Don't worry, Mother... I won't bring harm to you or to our family..."
As his eyes couldn't hold back his tears, he added.
"Please... just give me time. For everything I do, that may look senseless to you, is all to revive Lily..."
Lady Rose released her embrace and helped Lidien stand.
She stared into his eyes one last time before a faint smile touched her face.
"Remember, Lidien, we need to conquer the Savage Expanse for you to have a place as a Blessed of Death."
