Chapter 24: How Strange
CHAPTER 24
He woke up a few hours later, lying on the same spot with multiple bruises over his body. His head ached and his neck soared with pain as he tried to look up at the sky.
The blurred vision of someone before was apparent, and it was the reason for squinting his eyes in an attempt to see clearly who it was.
" You're not dead, at least not yet."
The voice was obviously coming from the person before him, and he recognized it immediately.
" Ren? What the hell are you doing here?" He asked slamming his head lightly against the sandy beach.
He opened his eyes after a few moments with his head only now aching slightly and the pain he felt around his neck completely. But the fact he had lain on that surface for more than two hours was something he didn't expect.
He could still remember how he ended up falling from the cliff, but he couldn't figure out who was the culprit behind his attempted murder.
While he was still in thought, Ren slowly approached with two cups held in his hands. He had one to him before sitting next to him.
" Don't we have any better place to stay?" He asked, turning towards him.
" You're obviously too tired to even stand up. Just drink up, and I'll take you home myself." Ren replied, turning his gaze toward the starry sky.
He didn't take a sip of the drink the ren had just given to him as his mind kept drifting towards what had happened a few hours earlier. Whatever or whoever it was that was attacking wanted something out of killing.
If that was so, then running further away would have been its best option, considering its speed, but it decided to stay and try to kill him.
" Wait, his words earlier, does he have a rough sketch of what happened in his mind, or perhaps he thinks it's something else entirely." He thought, slowly turning his gaze back to Ren.
Slowly, Ren stood up from the ground and slowly walked towards the wall of the cliff - the same point from which he fell.
" You fell from atop this cliff and managed to get injured to such a degree? Even if it were a test of endurance, I highly doubt any of this was of your intention."
He kept staring blankly into the drink he held firmly with both hands. Ren proceeded to stop with his words, giving him enough time to think.
He slightly gritted his teeth as he turned around and asked,
" Do you know currently living with us who uses a whip?"
" Let me guess, that's probably how you ended here head down from the top of this cliff?" He asked, staring with a hint of worry in his eyes, " I thought I told you to go home thirty minutes before it happened. What happens when your parents start looking for you in the middle of the night? Or even worse, the news of what we know gets out?"
He kept quiet, his eyes fixed on Ren as he spoke. From all the points the boy had made, he had already put most things together - it was obvious he was the one who took the sheet of paper he was looking for.
" The written note, well can I have I have it back?" He asked, stretching out his right hand, thus prompting a huge frown from Ren.
" Gosh, you never listen do you?" He said, quickly walking away, " and go home!"
At that point, he simply gave up in defeat and did as he was told. Trying to argue with Ren would be a lost cause anyway.
He soon arrived at the same path he was on before he got ambushed, an unsettling feeling ran down his spine as he slowly moved forward. There was a slight chance that the culprit may still be hiding and that very moment would be the best time to finish him off.
His eyes continued to dart around in the dark, trying to catch a glimpse of anything that may seem unusual but he could neither see nor sense anything.
It was the same with the entity that ran past him earlier - familiar yet foreign. He wouldn't have been able to comprehend it had he not come across the murder sight that day with Ren, but its presence felt slightly different still.
Despite that, knowing his current situation, the best thing he could do was move out of there as fast as he could but he still couldn't help but feel a thick aura of darkness surrounding him.
" Damnit, sometimes I keep forgetting that I'm supposed to be older than him and I even have more of an advantage this time." He thought, stopping in his tracks for a moment, " whoever it was didn't want me to get close. I guess I'll have to get close enough to find out."
He stood in the same position, his hands on his chin. He heightened his senses using his innate energy and it wasn't long before he caught the sound of something.
He quickly turned his gaze to the side and even though it was the middle of the night, he was able to see the multiple trees that slowly fell down. They had been swiftly cut but he couldn't tell what had done it.
He quickly ran forward, treading carefully towards the scene. It seemed to be another attack, but the commotion had subsided entirely before it could even begin.
And just as he got close, a sword came flying straight towards him, stabbing into the tree by his side. A figure approached him in that instant, placing the edge of a sword before his neck.
" Ohh, brother, how could I not have known it was you?" Came a familiar female voice as the sword was slowly lowered.
She slowly stepped aside with her gaze still fixed on him, and he did the same. Looking at her now, he could tell it was her, even with the mask she wore.
" What are you doing?" He asked.
" I followed you here knowing something was troubling you, but my opponent turned out to be quite stronger than I thought. She was the one who threw you down the cliff." She said, handing the whip to him.
He was left dumbfounded, staring at the whip as he slowly reached his hand towards it. The feeling was no different and it brought many questions to his mind, but before he could say anything, she ran away, leaving him to ponder on his own.
