Chapter 80: Renji's Birthday Whispers

The week started off too quiet.

Too normal.

That's how I knew something was up.

It was Monday morning, sunlight slicing through the classroom blinds as everyone half-slept through homeroom. A few girls chatted near the window, guys dozed with open textbooks, and Kai was already whispering jokes to Aki about how our math teacher looked like a discounted anime villain.

But in between the lazy chatter, I caught something strange.

My name.

"Renji's birthday?"

"Next week, right? May fifteenth?"

The words floated by, light as gossip but heavy enough to make me pause mid-stretch.

Kai grinned, elbowing me. "Guess you're about to be the center of attention, birthday boy."

"Don't even start," I muttered. "Last year was chaos."

Aki looked up from his notes. "You're acting like attention's a bad thing. With how the girls talk about you lately, I doubt you'll get a quiet week."

He wasn't wrong. Ever since the mess with Saki in the cafeteria, and that whole new-teacher drama, people looked at me differently. Some curious. Some jealous. Some just plain nosy.

Still, a birthday?

Didn't seem like a big deal.

At least until lunch break, when I caught a certain teacher watching me through the faculty room window.

Rika Shoku.

Her eyes flicked up from a stack of papers just long enough to meet mine. She smiled, soft, secretive and went back to pretending she wasn't eavesdropping on a conversation beside her.

And beside her… was Reina.

The school nurse had her usual calm smirk, leaning against the staff room counter, sipping coffee like she wasn't quietly stirring trouble. I couldn't hear much, but I could read lips well enough to catch one word.

"Birthday."

And that tiny, knowing smirk of Reina's told me this was about to spiral.

---

Outside, Kai was still rambling about buying me something dumb like a karaoke microphone.

But my mind was already spinning somewhere else.

If Reina was involved… and Rika looked that flustered…

Then this week was going to be anything but quiet.

---

We move into the staff room, it was quiet except for the hum of the AC and the faint clink of Reina's coffee spoon.

Rika sat opposite her, pretending to go through student files. Her glasses slid down her nose slightly, and she pushed them back up with a sigh, a dead giveaway she was distracted.

Reina smiled over her cup. "You're awfully tense for a Monday, Rika."

Rika didn't look up. "I'm not tense."

"Right. You just look like you're calculating missile trajectories while holding a pen."

That earned a faint glare. "Some of us actually work during work hours."

Reina chuckled softly. "And some of us notice when a certain teacher keeps glancing out the window every two minutes."

Rika froze. "I wasn't..."

Reina's grin widened. "You were. At him."

Rika pressed her lips together, cheeks faintly pink. "He's my student. It's my job to make sure he's focused."

"Uh-huh. Focused." Reina leaned back, crossing one long leg over the other. "You mean the same kind of 'focus' that makes your heart race every time he smirks your way?"

"Reina!"

Her teasing only grew. "Relax, I'm not judging. I'm just saying, if you're that invested, maybe you should do something special for his birthday next week."

Rika's pen stopped mid-note. "…His birthday?"

Reina sipped her coffee, watching the reaction she knew was coming. "May fifteenth. Monday next week."

Rika blinked. "How do you?"

"Girls in Class 2-B were gossiping near the infirmary," Reina said casually. "Apparently, the great Renji Sakamoto is turning seventeen. Big news."

Rika's eyes softened, the corners of her lips twitching into a small smile. "Seventeen, huh… time flies."

Reina tilted her head. "You sound like a proud mom."

"Don't start."

"Oh, I'm not teasing. I'm serious." Reina's tone dropped lower, playful, but edged with meaning. "You've seen how he's changed these past months. He's grown. Maybe he deserves a little celebration… from the ones who've guided him."

Rika hesitated. "…You mean us."

"Who else?"

For a moment, they both sat in silence, the weight of unspoken things hanging between them.

Then Reina smiled again, sly this time. "I was thinking… we organize something small. Subtle. Just us three, you, me, and him."

Rika frowned. "That would look… suspicious."

Reina shrugged. "Then we'll make it unsuspicious. Maybe a casual after-school hangout. Or…" She smirked. "Maybe a little surprise before that karaoke event everyone's planning."

Rika sighed, closing her file. "You've already thought this through, haven't you?"

"Of course," Reina said, setting her cup down. "It's not every day you get to plan something for the boy who somehow manages to steal both our attention."

Rika gave a helpless little laugh. "You really enjoy stirring chaos, don't you?"

"Only the kind that brings people closer."

Their eyes met, teacher and nurse, rivals and allies, quietly smiling over the same thought.

The door slid open just then.

Renji stood there, one hand in his pocket, brow slightly raised.

"Should I be worried you're both smiling like that?" he asked.

Reina's lips curved. "Not at all, birthday boy."

Rika's eyes widened. "Reina!"

But it was too late, the words were out, and Renji's smirk said everything.

"Birthday, huh?" he said, leaning on the doorframe. "Guess I'll have to start watching my back."

Reina chuckled. "Or your heart."

Rika groaned. "Reina…"

And just like that, the quiet week officially died before it even began.

The final bell rang like freedom.

Desks screeched, chairs scraped, and the air filled with chatter as everyone spilled out into the hallway. Renji stretched lazily, bag slung over his shoulder, watching the chaos with half a grin.

Kai appeared first, hair messy, uniform half-untucked, grin wide enough to sell trouble.

"Yo! Loverboy," he called, weaving through the desks. "You spacing out again or thinking about your next 'private consultation' with Nurse Hakari?"

Renji gave him a lazy look. "Keep talking, Kai. Maybe one day, a girl might actually reply to your messages."

"Ouch!" Kai clutched his chest. "You wound me, bro. Words sharper than Rika-sensei's glare."

From behind them, Aki joined in, clean-cut, calm-eyed, the complete opposite of Kai. "Ignore him, Renji. He gets loud when he's jealous."

Kai turned. "Jealous?! I'm worried for my boy here! First, the nurse smiles at him like she's hiding a secret, now Rika-sensei's calling him to her office every other day. Tell me that's not suspicious!"

Renji smirked. "You sure you're not the one watching too closely?"

"Bro, please," Kai said, slapping his shoulder. "Half the school's watching. Even the guys in Class 3-C are betting you've got some magic charm."

Aki crossed his arms. "He does. It's called confidence. Something you wouldn't recognize if it kicked your ass."

Kai gasped in mock offense. "Wow. Et tu, Aki?"

Renji laughed, a low, easy sound that rolled off his tongue. "You two sound like an old married couple."

Kai pointed at him. "Says the guy juggling the hottest women on campus and still walking around like it's a casual Tuesday."

Renji grinned, sharp and knowing. "Maybe I'm just built different."

"Understatement of the year," Aki muttered.

They walked together out of the building, the afternoon sun slanting golden across the courtyard.

Kai shoved his hands in his pockets. "Anyway, what's the plan this week? Feels like everyone's getting weird lately."

"Weird how?" Renji asked.

"I dunno." Kai frowned. "Rika-sensei looks at you like she's got something to say but won't. The nurse too. Hell, even Saki-sensei's been spacing out during homeroom."

Aki glanced at Renji. "They all know something you don't?"

Renji just smirked faintly. "Maybe they do."

Kai groaned. "Oh, don't give me that mysterious main character act. You definitely know something."

Renji tilted his head. "And if I did?"

"Then I'm gonna need popcorn," Kai said flatly. "Because whatever's coming? It's gonna be fun."

Renji just laughed again, quiet and confident. "Trust me. You have no idea."

Rika closed the door behind her, the soft click echoing through the quiet of the nurse's office.

Reina was already there, leaning casually against the counter with a file in hand, her lips curved in a knowing smile.

Across from her sat Mayumi, legs crossed, still in her P.E. jacket, her expression sharp, but the glint in her eye said she was up to something.

"You called this meeting like it's a war briefing," Mayumi said. "What's this about, Rika?"

Rika took a deep breath, folding her arms. "Renji's birthday. Next week, May 15."

Reina's smile deepened. "Ahh, so it begins."

Mayumi arched a brow. "You're telling me you dragged us in here to plan a birthday?"

Rika gave her that teacher stare. "Not just a birthday. His birthday. And you know exactly why that matters."

Mayumi sighed, rolling her eyes but a faint smile betrayed her. "You're really serious about this."

Reina stepped in, calm as ever. "We all owe him something. Each in our own way."

Silence hung for a moment. They all knew it was true.

Rika cleared her throat. "So, here's what I was thinking. We make it a surprise. Keep him busy all week, make him think it's just another normal day."

Mayumi smirked. "You mean we toy with him a little."

Rika gave her a warning look. "Playfully."

Reina chuckled. "You do realize he's going to notice us acting strange, right?"

"That's the fun part," Rika replied. "We'll act normal… but not too normal."

Mayumi leaned forward, intrigued. "Okay, teacher. What's the game plan?"

Rika's expression softened, a tiny blush touching her cheeks. "He's done so much for all of us. I want him to feel appreciated not for what he does, but for who he is."

Reina smiled warmly. "You've been thinking about this a lot, haven't you?"

"Maybe," Rika admitted. "But I'm not the only one. You've both seen how he's changed lately."

Mayumi leaned back, crossing her arms. "Yeah. Less cocky. More grounded."

Reina added gently, "And happier."

Rika nodded, eyes distant. "That's why I want this week to mean something. We'll each do our part, make him feel special in our own way. Then, on his birthday…"

Mayumi raised an eyebrow. "We hit him with the full surprise?"

Rika grinned. "Exactly."

Reina tapped her finger against the counter. "I'll handle the food and setup. I know a private lounge that'll work perfectly."

Mayumi smirked. "And I'll keep him distracted at school. Maybe even get Kai and Aki to help, without telling them what's up."

Rika smiled at both of them. "Good. I'll coordinate with Saki too. She deserves to be part of it."

The three women shared a look, different in temperament, but united in purpose.

Reina finally said, "Then it's settled. Operation: Renji's Birthday."

Mayumi laughed. "You're naming it like a mission now?"

Rika smirked. "Well… it is for a soldier.
